Liberty's Edge

I'm confusing myself with Power Attack, a feat I've never used before. Could use some help figuring it out.

I have a lvl 1 Paladin with a 14 strength, using a greatsword. He also has Weapon Focus: Greatsword. Do I have it right that he is +3 to Hit and +6 to damage? The normal +2 for Power Attack with a +1 since he is using a two-handed weapon and +3 strength damage for using a 2-handed weapon. Yes? No?

Now I bump him up to lvl 14 to play a paladin for Iron Medusa. He now has an 18 Str and a 14 BAB. He also has Furious Focus, which eliminates his minuses for his first swing when power attacking.

Would he then have a +19/+10/+5 to attack and 18 damage? +12 for power attack and +6 for strength with 2-handed weapon? Yes? No?

If no, where did I go wrong?
Thanks

Everything looks right to me.

He would be taking a -4 penalty to attack and adding a +12 to damage from power attack, a +6 to damage from strength.

You did not do wrong

at level 1 you get +2 to hit not +3 because the strength adds +2 weapon focus adds +1 and power attack subtracts 1. as for the damage it is +3 for power attack and +3 for strength so +6 is right

Except that he has a base attack of +1.

Thanks for the help folks. Been juggling too many numbers and it was starting to get foggy.

Hey don't sweat it. I have three players with PA, so I've had to repeat the same things over and over (and over). Its even better since the one is a barbarian and he has to figure in raging as well... <sigh>

Yeah, now to figure out PA with Smite; PA with Smite vs Evil Outsiders; PA with Undead Bane; and PA with Smite and Undead Bane. And what happens if I get lucky and score a crit with all of the above.

My head hurts!!! :-)

I find it easiest to write it all down in a space on my sheet. I'll have normal attack, then attack with PA, then attack with Smite, attack with PA and smite etc. It's a bit of extra work but because you're doing everything in steps and writing it all down in between, it prevents it being too difficult to juggle. I actually wrote an app for my phone to handle all the situational bonuses my archer gets, so if you're finding it that much trouble it's worth considering something along those lines.

Index cards are a gamer's best friend. They're not as fancy as a smart phone app but I'd say they're as handy at the table as duct tape is anywhere else.

Barbarians at my table have been writing up a second copy of the character sheet, we call it a rage sheet. It has everything figured out for rage and at the top they have Rage clearly marked on it. That way the only thing they have to figure out is their current hp's.

Yeah, that's the second one of my three players... The third is a Lion Shaman Druid and his dire tiger companion... :)
