Definition of "Mounted Combat" feats?

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

The Sohei Monk archetype says: "Bonus Feats: A sohei may select mounted combat feats as bonus feats." But what exactly constitutes a Mounted Combat feat? Is that any feat that has MC as a prereq? Even if there are other prereqs?

Anything with Mounted Combat as a prerequisite will take care of the majority of the feats. Though, keep in mind it doesn't have the clause that allows you to take feats with which you do not meet the prerequisites.

I'd also say any mounted feats that have other non-mounted feats as prerequisites could count. Though that may be more of a RAI thing.

I'd use this list:

Ranger Mounted Combat Style wrote:
Mounted Combat: If the ranger selects mounted combat, he can choose from the following list whenever he gains a combat style feat: Mounted Combat, Mounted Archery, Ride-By Attack, and Trick Riding*. At 6th level, he adds Mounted Shield* and Spirited Charge to the list. At 10th level, he adds Mounted Skirmisher* and Unseat to the list.

Which I guess brings us to Daehan's point. Does a Sohei Monk need to meet the other prereqs?

Nope. The Sohei monk's bonus feat ability modifies but does not replace the monk's regular bonus feat ability.

Sohei Monk wrote:

as bonus feats.

Bonus Feat:

At 1st level, 2nd level, and every 4 levels thereafter, a monk may select a bonus feat. These feats must be taken from the following list:

Catch Off-Guard, Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Improved Grapple, Scorpion Style, and Throw Anything.

At 6th level, the following feats are added to the list:

Gorgon’s Fist, Improved Bull Rush, Improved Disarm, Improved Feint, Improved Trip, and Mobility.

At 10th level, the following feats are added to the list:

Improved Critical, Medusa’s Wrath, Snatch Arrows, and Spring Attack.

A monk need not have any of the prerequisites normally required for these feats to select them.

So the Sohei monk just adds the feats from the ranger's mounted combat list to his list at the appropriate levels. He can then select from any of the feats, either base monk or mounted combat, which he is of a high enough level to qualify for when he gets a bonus feat. He need meet no prerequisite for these feats other than the level to get to that list.

EDIT -- So it looks like this:
