Whip Mastery Feat line and Different Whips

At first glance the Whip mastery line of feats looks really neat but even if you can make a normal whip a lethal weapon with those feats it is still extremely low damage. There are other types of whips out there in Pathfinder that are actually lethal and they are still technically whips. The first prerequisite though for Whip Mastery is Weapon focus (whips) which are just wimpy no matter how cool they look and sound. In addition, as far as I know weapon focus is usually about a specific weapon.

Different Whips I know:
Whip
Whip, scorpion
Nine Section Whip

What I want to know is whether you can apply the Whip Mastery Line to all whips or if using the weapon focus for those specific whips still qualifies you to take Whip Mastery for that whip.

I figure Whip Mastery will affect at least the whip and the Scorpion Whip, as the Scorpion Whip's description says you can use it as a whip if you are proficient with whips. In fact, that description makes me believe that Weapon Focus (Whip) would work for it just as well as it works for plain whips.

The Nine Section Whip on the other hand doesn't have that sort of description, nor does it have the reach or the other abilities in its description(which I'm assuming the Scorpion Whip does, since it is listed as a whip). I suppose the Whip Mastery feats would apply towards it, but I don't know how well it would work to take them.

I agree with Ackattack that the feats work with the scorpion whip. The nine section whip looks and is used like a nunchaku, so the feats don't apply to it.

I must say that i miss the whip dagger from 3rd edition, as with 1D6 as lethal damage, it was a good option for a viable whip fighter.

I agree with those previous statements.

But I find the low damage die of whips not so terrible. After all, the standard whip remains cheap and versatile. The ability to deal non-lethal damage also is not bad.
Combined with quick-draw you can make an awesome disarmer/tripper without actually having to burn feats on it since you can simply drop the whip when your CMB check fails and immediately pull out another one :-)

The whips biggest advantage is that it's a trip weapon with reach.
It's a really cool weapon for a battlefield supporter/controller. It's not so great as a weapon to actually do damage with.
For that application the inability to do lethal damage is not really so bad.

Also in higher levels the weapon dice itself is the least part of the damage. The difference between a d4 damage dice and a d12 damage dice is 4 average damage. If you're not using power attack or sneak attack to boost your damage then it really doesn't matter :)

The Exchange

Having a small damage die with an exotic weapon is a great combination for performance combat as well - you get to make a performance combat check when you roll maximum damage for your weapon (which is a lot easier on 1d3 than it is on 2d6, for example) and being an exotic weapon gives you a +2 circumstance bonus on the check. So... chicks dig the whip... ;)

I would have to disagree that the nine section whip is like a nunchaku but I do agree that it is a bit of a grey area in it's description. Nunchaku are really just an oriental flail and it was used as such. The nine sectioned whip was used more like a whip but I guess it could fall under chains.

Ya I know it is wikipedia but mostly you just find where you can buy the weapon, but I did find a good you tube video of it's use and it looks nothing like a nunchaku in it's use.
