Summoner Cav

Advice

I am wondering if you can make a viable character out of a multi class Summoner Cavalier...

If you make the edilon the cavs mount... unfortunately you end up with a redundant mount.

Flavour wise if you can create a wyrm like creature that allows you to fight in dungeons then you have "fixed" one of the Cavs problems.

Are there any suggestions?

Well, it's not the most efficient, but a half-elf cavalier 4/summoner X can effectively have two powerful mounts with the Horse Master feat from Ultimate Combat. The eidolon loses 4 evolution points (which the half-elf's alternate favored class bonus can eventually regain) and ~3 HD, while the cavalier's mount increases by character level instead of cavalier level.

Optionally, instead of two mounts, a cavalier/synthesist summoner could make a brutal combatant.

Well, if you wanted a wyrm mount...

SGG's Dragonrider is on d20pfsrd.

If you already get the mount why still take cavalier levels ?

look for some fighter, barbarian, paladin or ranger archetypes maybe to fit, I think barbarian has some decent mounted option in the APG.
Paladin benefits from charisma and most likely has an archetype that fits snugly, pretty sure fighter has a mounted archetype, not sure on ranger but there is bound to be something for rangers as well. A summoner with proper feats and stats can come a long way as a single class as well, they have average BAB and some fancy abilities.

Really?

I can see the PRD being interpreted both ways. Is there an official statement regarding this? It's of interest to me because I want to play a multiclassing Cavalier as well.

The feat Horse Master (which requires Expert Trainer, AKA 4 levels of Cav) sets the mount's level to be based on character level, not class level.
