Hadn't thought of this before but I had a player ask...can a character take Weapon Focus with his shield to attack with it? If so, does it have to be spiked? Thanks!

do not need spikes to attack with shield. spikes just add better damage and since are weapons can be enchanted as magic weapons.

Yes, a shield is a martial weapon. It doesn't have to be spiked to attack, to take Weapon Focus with it (and the feat would apply to both a normal and spiked shield), or to be a magic weapon (though in the latter case, it has to be made as a masterwork weapon, not just a masterwork shield).

I have a player with a spiked shield. Is a separate weapon focus feat required for both the light and heavy spiked shield, or is "shield spike" the object of the weapon focus?

For purposes of using Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, or other feats that require a specific weapon, I normally just look under the Fight weapon groups as a guideline for proficiencies. For example, weapons listed in the Close weapon group are, gauntlet, heavy shield, light shield, punching dagger, sap, spiked armor, spiked gauntlet, spiked shield, and unarmed strike. I would use that list for proficiencies that require a specific weapon in the particular feat.

You can take weapon focus, but you have to specify the type of shield it works with. So you could take Weapon Focus (heavy shield) or Weapon Focus (light shield), but you couldn't take just Weapon Focus (shield).

Kind of like you can take Weapon Focus (longsword) and Weapon Focus (shortsword), but not just Weapon Focus (sword).

Technically spiked shields are different than their unspiked counterparts. I personally treat them like compound bows (feats apply to them as if they were the base weapon), but that's not actually RAW.

I am guessing that you meant to say "composite" bows, unless the gnomes in your world have created some new bow with pulleys and ropes. :)

Also, note that not every character who is proficient with shields for protection purposes is proficient with them as a weapon. Clerics can use shields for protection, but they're not proficient with all martial weapons, so they're not proficient with shield bashing.

Yes, I meant composite, but now...--scribbles and laughs madly at GM notes--

@Starglim: A masterwork shield counts as masterwork for both defense and attack for the purpose of magically enhancing it. However it does not provide the +1 to attack masterwork weapons usually grant.

Even though some types of armor and shields can be used as weapons, you can't create a masterwork version of such an item that confers an enhancement bonus on attack rolls. Instead, masterwork armor and shields have lessened armor check penalties.
