Spontaneous spells known

Rules Questions

When a spontaneous spellcaster (sorcerer, oracle, etc.) gains new spells known, can they be a lower level than what is given (e.g. instead of gaining a 2nd-level spell at 4th level, can a sorcerer pick a 1st-level spell instead)?

Grand Lodge

Unlike wizards, who get to pick two spells from any level they can cast when they level up, sorcerers and oracles have a hardcoded table that determines what spells they can get of what level. This is best reflected in the sorcerers ability to swap spells at 4th level. It specifies that you can only swap a spell for another of the same level. Thus, no you cannot pick a 1st level spell instead of a 2nd level spell.

I did not think he was asking about the spell swap. I think he was asking about the actual brand new spell which can be lower level, IIRC.

As for the new spells the rules are silent, but I would allow it.

Grand Lodge

I was using the swap option as an example of why the rules do not allow it. The chart says what spells of what level you get, and nothing says you can deviate from that chart.

While AFAIK RAW does not allow it, if I were your GM I would have no problem with this as a house rule.

Liberty's Edge

As TOZ said, a sorcerer knows a specific number of spells. For example, a sixth-level sorcerer knows 7 0-level spells, 4 1st-level spells, 2 2nd-level spells and 1 3rd-level spell. It seems to me that substituting a 1st-level spell for a 2nd-level spell would weaken the character. I am not sure I would allow it if I were the GM.

As the DM, I would ask the player why he wanted this (if it was for a possible cheesing purpose or maybe simply for preference of spells). If it was legit enough, then I would make sure they are quite aware that they are weakening their character overall and that if they did not receive any spell at the higher level, then they wouldn't attain the qualifier "Ability to cast X level spells."

Ditto.

Or perhaps the GM might work with them to develop a 2nd level spell version of the 1st level spell that they want to take...?

Yeah, that'd be fine.

Most GMs willing to houserule a bit, will allow the swapping of spell for one of lower level, but there are some other ways to get more spells known.

The Arcane bloodline gives you additional spells, which is possible to get with Eldritch Heritage feats as well.

There is a feat, extra spell or something in the APG, that allows you TWO spells of a lower level than the highest you can cast (or one of your highest).

Human and I think Gnome sorcerors have the option to get extra spell of a lower level in exchange for their favored class benefit of that level.
