D&D Monstrous Bestiary Conversion

Conversions

Dark Archive

A thread for converting the monsters we'll never see released in Pathfinder. I'm going to open with a Beholder and an Illithid. Feel free to contribute more monsters as well. Do us a favor and put them in Spoiler Tags and break it up with white space though, so we dont have a wall of monster text.

I haven't seen much in the way of these conversion on here, so I'll put some up, and hopefully others will contribute. Any non-OGC Monster is good to go (even if it's not from WotC), though I imagine most will be from MM1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or some faerun book.

Also, the way the abilities work may be a bit wordy, let me know if you have any problems understanding it, or ideas for clarification. Also let me know if you have any problem with the conversion itself.

I'm not exactly sure if getting copyrighted content here is a good move.

Sure, that's you doing the conversion, not Paizo, but "you host infringements on our IP on your website" has happened before and might happen again (ref: torrent websites). Especially given that the flavor text is a copy-pasta from Lords of Madness... :/

Hmm. I thought posting fan conversions was fair game since nothing is being published. Is it just the fact that I included the flavor text?

Can I get a response from someone official maybe? Is posting conversions like this a problem? If it's the fact that it includes flavor text, would it be okay without the flavor text?

(In the meantime I'll edit them to not include the flavortext.)

As long as you post it somewhere where you take the responsibility, it's all fine. For example, if you put all that at Google Docs and link it here the worst that can happen is GD taking it down if WotC asks them to.

But Paizo, as owners and administrators of this forum, are responsible for what happens here, to a degree. And since it's two head-to-head competitors we're talking about here...

Also, "published" is a broad term. Back in the 90s, TSR would C&D and even sue people for *mentioning* their IP on fansites - it was rather an infamous part of D&D history, to say at least.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll do it that way instead then. I took down the version I put up originally.

Beholder
Illithid

There we go. I actually only put up the plain text version because I figured that would be less problematic. Apparently I got it backwards.

Thanks Darkholme! You've saved me some effort as I specifically needed an Illithid and was going to convert it myself when I found your post. Any plans to continue these conversions? Some of the Illithid variants and the Beholderkin could use some love too! ;-)

Glad you've found some use for them. I've been mostly hearing complaints about the mindflayer. It wasn't save-or die-ey enough anymore, and the mechanic was deemed too clunky (which maybe it is still too clunky). I haven't got a decent alternative at the moment, but I dont want to go back to the 3.5 version either, it's a step in the right direction, but I agree the mindflayer mechanic for eating brains could use a little more simplicity. If you have any suggestions let me know. at the moment I'm going to leave it alone; and come back to it later.

As for continuing this, I intend to do more of these, though I probably wont be doing the illithid/beholder focus youre looking for. My main idea is to convert the monsters from my 3.5 mm I want so theyre compatible with my pf games. I have a lits. I believe next on my list are Gith, then Umberhulks, I'm largely doing them in the order I'm likely going to need them. I'm not running a game atm, so I'm converting them in the order I'm *guessing* that I'll need them. I imagine after umberhulks the next step will be Helmed Horrors (Lost Empires of Faerun). There will likely be a mix of Demons/Devils/Yugoloths mixed in there as well. I like me some Faerunian Dragons and Dragonkin (note I dont want dragon*born*). Actually I might do Helmed Horrors Next.

Essentially I'll be converting everything in the order I need it (though hopefully well before I actually do need it). I might take requests if I have free time, if you request *Specific Monsters* But the Beholder/Illithid variants are not high on my list, unless I run something featuring lots of beholders/illithids.

Just have alot of other stuff on my plate at the moment, from real life stuff to my NWN Pathfinder Mod I've started on. I'll be working on it on and off, but I wont be putting these out every few days or anything. I might get another monster out earlyish next week. I wont have time to even attempt to work on one until monday or so.

Hi Darkholme, making your Illithid conversion available is great and helps others. You also got it done in quick time :)
I have an opportunity to playtest Pathfinder conversions of these iconic creatures in a few weeks from now and your conversion should be one of the variants tested. If I gain any insight or have alternatives to offer I'll post them for assessment by yourself and others.

Cheers,
Silke

Has anyone done Draconians? That would be useful in playing old Dragonlance modules converted to Pathfinder.

I considered doing it for the charity work of it (I've never run dragonlance and Probably never will) though personally I'd get alot more use out of Dragonkin (Large Creatures, and one for each dragon type, though otherwise a similar concept to draconians).

I can look into it some time next week though I suppose. it might not be that hard to convert over. The beholder took me about an hour or two. It was mostly a matter of recalculating hitpoints and skills. I doublechecked the math on the saves, and they were good. I think I may have had to give him one more feat.

I hate to necro a thread as old as this, but figured it was better than starting another on the same topic. The links above no longer work so I was hoping someone might have current ones. The illithids and beholders are my favorite evil monsters ever and I have no idea how to do conversions.
