Which skill do you use to know which way is North underground?

Rules Questions

Is it Survival or Knowledge (Dungeoneering)? Or not possible?

NOTE: We didn't have a Compass.

Grand Lodge

Unless you have a wayfinder it's not going to happen unless you can orient yourself to the planet's magnetic field.

The Exchange

If is is possible to have track your movements since entering the dungeon then I would make it a knowledge (duneoneering), modified by to complexity of the turns they have made and the length of time they have travelled.

If they simply woke up in a dungeon, then no check would be allowed without a compass or a wayfinder.

Liberty's Edge

Not possible without a compass or other similar device.

HOWEVER, this is a magical world so i would allow a check for my players. Either skill is good. I would prob say dungeoneering if underground and survival if above (harder to tell underground, no sun direction and so on)

A magical world means that there might be a magical means (spell, spell-like ability, racial ability, magic item) that would get the job done. To use a mundane skill, there has to be a mundane source of data. If a magical world also includes such a mundane source of data, whether mold that grows in the shape of compass roses or whatever, that's cool. YMMV.

I personally would rule that you also need to be able to see the sky.

I know of people who always know where North is, no matter where they are. All it takes is constantly asking yourself where north is when you're outside. After a while of this, you'll get an intuitive understanding of where North is, based on how you move. Kinda cool actually.

Maybe there is some type of clue that can be picked up on. People in movies have been able to deduce direction from clues while underground.

I imagine it's possible to figure it out based on growth patterns of mold or fungi, even underground.

I would use the Survival skill.

RAW: survival as mentioned

however as houserule I would only allow survival if that person was never moved while unconscious. Increase difficulty for every day. DC:0+5*days

Other possibilty if you have a bird, it will always know true north if they have their left eye.

...what?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Something about magnetic bird eyes

"People in movies have been able to deduce direction from clues while underground." - wraithstrike

Not the most convincing argument. ;-)

I am one of those, only I always know where "West" is. I know, by default then, I know where North is, but West always comes to mind first...

There is no point to having the ability if you have to see the sky. That's a bit like saying you can tell when it's daytime, but only if you can see the sky.

Dark Archive

Dungeoneering I think also includes spelunking if you want to incorperate that skill in addition to or instead of survival.

Humans do have tiny crystals in our heads that are sensitive to magnetic fields, some are greater then others, which helps determine north. Birds have the same thing only theirs are much larger in ratio to the size of thier heads, which is how they migrate.

Shadow Lodge

Its not RAW as far as I know, but I'll allow Dwarves to know which way north is underground usually in m games. Especially if the character comes from extensive underground mining and what not in their backstory.

There are sufficient iron deposits in the bridge of your nose to detect magnetic north if you're really paying attention.

Grand Lodge

If you are a worshipper of Desna, the Starchild trait gives you innate knowledge of north.

.... The human body will never stop having weird powers such as this.

It's Survival. That skill already covers locating north; just because you're underground shouldn't change the skill (although at the GM's option, it could and probably SHOULD raise the DC).

Fair.
