Looking for guidelines on stating up a new Animal Companion

Advice

Paizo continues to add more and more animal companion options. Typically the animal companion version of a creature differs from its bestiary version. Are there any guidelines available on how to do the conversion?

No, I'm looking for something that would let me generate the Starting Statistics and X level advancement (how do I decide if it is a level 4 or 7 advancement by the way?). For example, how would I work out what starting statistics to use for a compsognathus, and what statistics to use for the X level advancement.

I doubt that these types of things are eyeballed every single time, given the number of animal companion types that have been written up. I was hoping to find out what type of guidelines are followed.

With the number of already-made companions, it likely wouldn't be too much of a challenge to copy and reflavor one of the existing ones, with a bit of editing. The Bestiary entries for the animals themselves should provide a lot of the meat as far as their actual abilities, the rest of the stat blocks could be adapted.
