Dwarf Barbarian in Heavy Armor?

Rules Questions

Total N00b question, I know. But if a Dwarven Barbarian wears Heavy Armor, what is his movement speed?

The heavy armor does not impede his movement....

hope that helps!

Liberty's Edge

20 feet.

He's normally 20 feet. He doesn't get the barbarian movement speed because he's in heavy armor. He doesn't get his speed penalized for being in heavy armor because he's a dwarf.

A dwarf does not reduce his normal movement speed (20 feet) due to armor or encumberence.

A barbarian does not gain his speed enhancment while wearing heavy armor.

So a dwarf barbarian in heavy armor moves 20 feet as a normal move action.

The Fast Movement class feature is specifically prevented from functioning in heavy armor, but since he's a dwarf it doesn't slow him below his base speed.

A dwarf in medium armor, however, would move a full 30 feet.

I'm getting conflicted answeres here. Which trumps which- the statement that Fast Movement doesn't work in Heavy Armor, or the statement that Dwarves' speed is never reduce by Heavy Armor?

I guess, when looking at it that way, the first trumps the second- because it doesn't matter if their speed is reduced or not, because once you put on heavy armor, Fast Movement ceases to work.

Has there been any official word on this?

Psst........

If you want a faster heavily armored dwarf tank.

Try a cleric with travel and liberation domains, with heavy armor profic.

You are? With the exception of Kin's non-answer, everyone has said 20 feet, as will I.

The Fast Movement ability says that the ability applies only when she is wearing no armor, light armor or medium armor. A careful reading shows it specifically says to apply this before adjusting for armor worn.

How you calculate it:
Dwarf = 20 ft.
Fast Movement adds 10 ft. so, 30 ft.
Dwarf dons heavy armor nullifying fast movement, 20 ft.
Dwarf in heavy armor doesn't have reduced movement, still 20 ft.

EDIT: This was also addressed in the WoTC 3.5 FAQ.

They're not conflicting, they're describing two different things.

A human in no armor moves 30'. A dwarf in no armor moves 20'.
A human in medium or heavy armor moves 20'. A dwarf in medium or heavy armor moves 20'. This is because a dwarf is not slowed by medium or heavy armor.

A barbarian gains the special ability "Fast Movement"

Quote:
A barbarian’s land speed is faster than the norm for her race by +10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian’s speed because of any load carried or armor worn. This bonus stacks with any other bonuses to the barbarian's land speed.

A human barbarian in no armor moves 30+10 feet. A dwarf barbarian in no armor moves 20+10 feet.

A human barbarian in medium armor moves 20+10 feet. A dwarf barbarian in medium armor still moves 20+10 feet. (Again, because they're not slowed).
A human barbarian in heavy armor loses fast movement, so only moves 20 feet. A dwarf barbarian in heavy armor still loses fast movement, so only moves 20 feet.

Basically, heavy armor doesn't slow the dwarf, but it can still take away abilities lost when wearing heavy armor.

Side note: You actually add the +10 feet to movement speed, then figure out how slow heavy armor makes you. For a 30' base speed, or a dwarf, this doesn't matter, but if you normally move 50' or 20' (and aren't a dwarf), it can become relevant.

+1. I was trying to state that, but you worded it much better then I.

You got the second statement wrong. a Dwarf's BASE speed of 20 is never reduced by heavy armor. The Barbarian Enhancement to that base speed is canceled out by heavy armor however.

But if they are wearing Mithril Heavy Armor, it only counts as Medium for Movement-related effects...
So ironically, even though Dwarves are usually the last ones to care about Mithril armor for movement speed,
in this case the Mithril allows the Barbarian Fast Movement to keep functioning.

If you want a faster heavily armored dwarf tank who hits things really hard, try a barbX/cler1/fighX with the travel domain, and take the drunken brute variant (which trades out the barb fast-move you won't be using anyway).

Buy a wand of Longstrider and tap yourself with it before entering dungeons, and you'll have a 40' move in full-plate as a dwarf.
