Should Shield bonus to AC stack?

Rules Questions

So I know that in the raw it says that the only type of AC bonus that stacks is dodge but if you have 2 shields should the AC stack? The logic behind this is if I have 2 shields on my chance of blocking an attack is going to be much better then if I had only one shield. The reason a person would want 2 shield is because in the APG an item you can get is the quick draw shield and if you have the quick draw feat you can don and undon the quick draw shield as a free action so if I attack with a Gsword put it away with quick draw and pull out my shield then I can get an AC bonus from the shield. Then at the start of my next turn I put away my shield pull out my Gsword attack with the Gsword put away the Gsword then pull my quick draw shield out again so that I can have a 2 handed wep and use a shied. So if I were to have 2 shields then I would use the same formula as above with the added step of one shield so if the shield bonus would stack with itself when you have 2 shields then if u buy 2 quick draw shields you can increase your AC by another 1.

If it was so someone could fight with two shields? Sure, I'd allow it.

If it's for the scenario you commented on, no.

Unless quick draw changed it also doesn't let you sheath a weapon for free just draw it.

Dark Archive

no. mainly because it looks rediculous, but also its cheese Dual weilding +5 tower shields for 18 ac, or a +5 tower sheild and +5 heavy shield for 16 ac is off the charts on the overpowered munchkin scale

Ok thank you all very much this has been very helpful

Well, you're missing the other part of your logic. Each shield you wield obscures a certain amount of your vision. With two shields, you might cover more area, but you can't see where the attacks are coming from to move your shield to intercept.

Also, it's an extremely cheesy concept, which will lead to pain, tears, and having your shields constantly sundered.

Also, if you're putting your greatsword away, then you're not giving yourself much room for making attacks of opportunity.

Additionally, free actions are limited by dm fiat, so check with your dm to see if he has a problem with you stowing a shield, drawing a sword, stowing the sword, and drawing the shield each round during the six seconds you're also making all your attacks in. :p

There's an inherent danger in trying to apply "logic" to a rpg. The rules are balanced in a logical manner. Trying to defeat that logic ignores the internal logic of the system balance.

It's a slippery slope. You start with "why can't I get the benefit of two shields, move on to tower shields for 100% cover both ways, then start asking yourself "why can't I get the benefit of modern chemistry to make better shields? I've got the ranks." Before long, you're playing a magic user, creating various fissionable materials to build a horribly powerful bomb with which to destroy the world. :p

If you allow this, Expect turtle, the four armed shield bashing alchemist with a quick draw shield holding 3 shields, throwing bombs, and then quick drawing the 4th shield.

If you could stack shield bonuses...

Alchemist- two additional limb discoveries. four tower shields plus the heaviest light armor = 30 AC

Then you've got discoveries that add natural armor, from what I remember a decent amount. Of course you have some dexterity too. Maybe dodge. An item.

I can go on and on about how broken stacking shield bonuses would be

A four armed alchemist doesn't even need AC. He has 100% cover in all directions. Give him a tentacle and let him slowly bleed away HP with his piddling grab attack from behind his tower shield fortress.
