When creating a new spell do you roll both Spellcraft AND Knowledge?

Rules Questions

I'm a little confused on the rules for creating a new spell.

So once you figure out the DC you make both checks. What's not clear is what happens if you fail one or both.

Do you loose the materials? Do you loose 1/2? 1/3rd? Do you just take longer to research (no progress)?

Any help in clearing this up would be appreciated.

"To successfully research the spell, the caster must succeed at both checks. Failure indicates the week was wasted."

both checks means failing either is a failure

and the materials any materials used during that week would be wasted as well
