The description says:
Stag’s Leap (Ex): As a free action, the ranger can attempt
a running jump without moving 10 feet before the jump.
Does that mean that this ranger trick is ACTIVATED as a free action (and still needing a normal jump check as a move action) or that ranger makes a jump check as a free action?

Wow, that's a good question. I'd always read it as he could use a free action to be considered running without moving. However, if that was the case, why use Free Action at all? It would be just as valid to say 'The ranger can attempt a running jump without moving 10 feet before the jump'.
I think I'll interpret it as he can just attempt to jump as if running, even without moving 10 feet. The other way would have him be able to teleport from one end of the continent to the other instantly in the same turn by taking one free action after another to leap. :)

Well, how it's worded it would appear that yes, the jump would be a free action. But that's just silly. Infinite movement?

Yes, and it also states in Acrobatics that no jump can allow you to exceed your maximum movement for the round.
But still, this gives rangers the pounce ability, basically.
Not quite. Pounce's +2 to all attacks from charging helps a lot more than people think
