Body slot penalty?

Rules Questions

In 3.5 there was a penalty to create a magic item for an inapproiate body slot (i.e. boots of speed made into a hat).
I do not see this in Pathfinder RPG, am I missing it or was it done away with?

It's not there. So, we have to assume it was intentional and that there is no body slot affinity unlike 3.5.

There was such a thing in 3.5?

I don't recall there being an actual penalty. I DO recall it being suggested for the magic items to "make sense" (boots of speed instead of hat of speed, gloves of dexterity instead of belt of dexterity, etc.).

There is nothing wrong with a Belt of Dexterity...

I think that Paizo has removed that restriction.

Scarab Sages

Except for ability increasing items, which iirc are locked into either headbands for mental stats or belts for physical stats, there are none

Meh. I was trying to remember off the top of my head what a couple of the examples were. :p

It was a 50% cost increase if it was not the propper body slot.

Silver Crusade

Wait, so now, as long as your item takes at least one body slot, you could theorically have Bracers of Strength 2 + Boots of dexterity 2 + Belt of constitution 2 for 12k GP instad of 18k, or 16k for the belt of physical perfection ?
108k instead of 144k for using three slots instead of one and +6 to each physical stat ?

The Exchange

Using the rules for magic item creation, there's actually no reason you couldn't change any magic item into another slot for the same cost. (Or double the cost for a no slot item.) What's preventing you is what your GM will allow, and whether you're going for awesome cheese or interesting characters.

Yeap. The rules-as-written are in your favor. Of course, the GM can rule 0 whatever he wants or limit purchasing items to what's in the Core Rulebook.

Well, not entirely "in your favor". Compared to the other guy with the expensive belt, you save 26,000 gp. But he gets to wear two more magic items than you do.
