The summoner (synthesist) kept chasing the SM from cell to cell to get in hits on him while the Magus had retreated to recover from being knocked to 1 HP (only a three person party). Rounds passed and eventually both the splatter man and his haunt died which triggered the collapse of the room. This knocked the summoner to 1 HP and the bard to -11 (12 con) no one was close enough to administer a potion before he bled out.

Why would a Druid be killing gravediggers anyway?

Why would a Druid be killing gravediggers anyway?

I think it was because they wanted him to leave and they weren't very nice to him

Liberty's Edge

Name: Dorabo
Race: Dwarf
Classes/levels: Cleric of Hanspur 3/Evoker 1
Adventure: Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: Harrostone Dungeons
Catalyst: The Splatter Man
The Gory Details: Although he was suffering from filth fever, Dorabo rushed up to land the finishing blow on the Splatter Man. Sadly, the angle of attack provided the ghost with an attack of opportunity, which he used to slay the rather unusual little dwarf.

Name: Hargon Rethos
Race: Human

After being injured in an attack by an ectoplasmic creature, Hargon found himself in a coffin tended by a red haired priest of Pharasma. After moments of failed battles of wills, Hargon succumbed to Father Charlatan's trickery. Hargon's companions, despite their efforts were unable to assist him. They were forced to watch as ghostly chains strangled Hargon's mortal body and sent him into Pharasma's embrace.

Name: Wilhelm Schneider
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Paladin 3
Adventure: Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: Room U3: The Headless Guard
Catalyst: Gurtis Vortch
The Gory Details: Gurtis landed a crit with his handaxe as Wilhelm moved in to defend the party Inquisitor. 46 points of damage was enough to take the Paldins head off. Luckily he had a spare couple of hero points, so technically not an obit, as he spent the requisite 2 hero points to live.

Scarab Sages

Name: The Lopper
Race: Some sort of ghost
Classes/Levels: Mean 1 / Nasty 1
Adventure: Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: Northern Obullette
Catalyst: Cursed Party Member
The Gory Details: Well, after the previous battle where one of the PC's had to make the will save to keep from bopping their buddy over the head with a certain hammer, the party found the lopper and I decided to get a bit creative with it... Spoilers Ho!

Spoiler:
Anyway, the party Oracle had the Lopper's Axe, and when the fight started and his initiative came up I said "Will Save." He replied with a 9, and was then told that the axe he carried around had a compulsion to be 'reacquainted' with its former master in the most violent of means. Currently the only actual magic weapon the party possessed, the Oracle managed to single handedly wipe half of the Lopper's HP away, while the paladin smited the other half away. Poor Lopper, we hardly knew ye!

Most of the other encounters were fairly poor except for the alchemical oozes inside the room with the slamming portal haunt

Note: Tiny ooze swarms are fun but I want diminutive ones as well *pyramid of evil*

Name: Fats
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Chirurgeon/Vissectionist Lvl-5
Adventure: The Trial of the Beast
Location: Room E4 Vorkstag & Grine’s Chymic Works
Catalyst: Vorkstag

The party had gone 10 rounds into the combat vs. Grine, Vorkstag and the Monglemen. The party was poor at ranged weapons and was very frustrated that they couldn’t get to Grine, who was using his darkness and spider climb to stay away from the party. Grine climbed on the planks using spider climb. An already injured Fats saw his chance and ran out onto the planks not quite reaching Grine. Vorkstag hurled a bomb and hit Fats, Fats lost his balance and fell into a vat of Acid. Fats now heavily injured attempted to climb out and failed. The party seeing there only way to help him was to have the Cleric of Serinrae get close and channel energy keeping him alive for another round. In the process of channeling she also revived 4 monglemen on the floor of the factory who were slowly bleeding to death. All the rest of the party was on the floor of the factory either from falling or climbing down and were far out of reach to help Fats. Using a grappling hook and rope Fats climbed out of the acid vat only to be struck by another Vorkstag bomb, and again Fats lost his balance and fell head first into the vat of Acid never to be seen again.

Name: The whole darn party
Race: 4 humans and a halfling
Classes/levels: Paladin 1; Rogue 1; Bard 1; Cleric 1; Ranger 1
Adventure: The Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: S14, S19, & R10
Catalyst: Poltergeist

During the encounter in S14 with the Poltergeist, the Paladin was the only one to fail his save vs. fear from the frightener ability. While the Poltergeist was having fun throwing the halfling at the rest of the party via telekenisis, the Paladin went through the door into S19 that had not been explored yet while fleeing and met Old Ember Maw. He was fairly luck in that initial blast and kept running... right into the lake, activating the skeletons from R10.

Old Ember May took down 2 of them (one with a crit, but an amazingly low roll allowed him to go into negatives but stabalize). Then the skeletons showed up and bad rolls on the parties part and a crit on the party cleric were too much... the started going down. Finally the bard was the only one not down, he started to run.

Making the decision to have the skeletons start dragging unconscious players into the lake to join them rather than chase the bard, the bard drank a potion and came back. It came down to the bard and a skeleton with 1 hp left... dice failed him twice and the drowning commenced. TPK.

We decided to rewind to the poltergeist fight, have the pally run another way and the rest went smooth as butter. Still... the players who were worried about the adventure being too easy or that I wouldn't pull the trigger are now satisfied that I will.

4 PCs so far? Wow! They're luck is terrible (except for the druid, who died by misadventure of course)!

It was a pretty fun encounter and I think it ended up working well for the party as a whole. We did rewind the encounter instead of letting things go as they did, but it was still a lot of fun for all. Not a bad first session.

They suck at perception and are constantly caught in a surprise round

Name: Daria
Race: Aasimar(slightly modded to be more in line with other player races)
Classes/levels: Fighter 2
Adventure: Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: Prison Lake
Catalyst: Prison Gates, 4 Zombies
The Gory Details: As this is a six player game, and I wanted to emphasize the horror aspects I've upped the challenge rating a bit. The first PC to walk through Harrowstone's gates was subjected to a fear effect, and failed her save. She saw the gates slam shut behind her and felt the need to flee any way possible. The lake being the only obvious exit means she swims out that way. No one tried to stop her (though the witch did cast water breathing on her), so she makes it to the middle of the lake, with everyone else waiting on shore. That's when the four zombies start aiding another on grapple attempts...

Two rolls of 16+ later and she's pinned to the bottom of the lake, and subsequently torn apart. The two bravest PC's, having waited until she started floundering to jump into the water, finally make it there just in time to see the body being torn to pieces, and proceed to scare off two of the zombies with chill touch, stab the other two to death with daggers so they can recover what is left of the body and it's gear, and everyone sucessfully flees back to town. Somewhere in there the burning skeletons come to shore and are dealt with quite efficiently by the three other party members who refused to go into zombie infested waters.

Name: Darien von Carstein
Race: Dhampir
Classes/levels: Foresight Wizard 9
Adventure: Wake of the Watcher
Location: Thrushmoor's Livery Stable
Catalyst: Bad rolls, good rolls
The Gory Details: The party was lured into the trap by a would-be assassin who had planted two ghoul rogues in the stables as backup. The ghouls laid prone and hidden in the hay under a carriage with a missing wheel while the assassin pretended to struggle with placing the final wheel on. To distract the group, he handed them a porcelain egg-- the same hollow one he had received his orders in-- betting that they would spend a few moments attempting to open it; Moments he could use to ask some party members to help him lift his carriage so he could place the wheel on... and so the ghouls could strike.

The second he got it, the party summoner, Nathaniel Thorn, used open/close on the egg, popping it open. They saw the Whispering Way symbol at the bottom near immediately.

So, the assassin began to draw his dagger. A surprise round initiated because of the hidden and undetected ghouls. Nobody but Darien von Carstein rolled high, and nobody noticed the ghouls at all. Darien von Carstein was given his surprise round action for being a divination specialist... so, to stop the stablemaster, he greased his weapon. The assassin failed his save, lost his dagger, and lost his only chance to use a death attack.

The ghouls used the rogue talent Stand Up to leap to their feet, and charged. One hit Darien-- and Darien failed his save versus paralysis.

Comparing initiatives, it was Darien, the monsters, and the rest of the party. Back to normal, full initiatives, Darien was first, paralyzed and could take no actions. On its turn, the ghoul, uncontested, coup de grace'd Darien by snapping his neck and killing him.

Two hero points were spent and he survived the attack by calling on his vampiric heritage to regenerate his body.

Amusingly, in an act of revenge, the party cleric, Zach, used plane shift on the murderous ghoul... and sent him to the positive energy plane.

His experience there was very similar to something like this:

"... Oh."
pop

I am putting a post in this this week not due to a death, but the lack thereof, having a look through this post i felt it fitting in that the first game since running this AP that PC hasnt died bringing be to 4 deaths in 4 games and have now brought in hero points for added safety

Classes/levels: 7th level Cleric
Adventure: Broken Moon
Location: Felgrau
Catalyst: Auren Vrood
The Gory Details: Circle of Death and failed saving throw = death. Like mentioned above the group of six decided not to explore feldgrau and went straight for the final encounter. The utter lack of tactics in the final encounter hurt them even more. The group was concentrating on killing the giant crawling hands while Vrood was freely casting spells at them. So Vrood had three rounds of unhindered spellcasting to wipe half the group out. The group barely survived the encounter and learned that hard way not to rush into stuff.

Name: Brother Benedict Love
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Cleric of Shelyn 2
Adventure: The Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: U3: The Headless Guard
Catalyst: Gurtis Vortch and poor rolls
The Gory Details:

Spoilers Included:
Link, Paladin of Iomedae, pushed open the door to the old guardroom and was at once set upon by an ax-weilding headless flaming skeleton. A close quarters combat ensued, wherein the GM rolled consitently high and the party rolled consistently low...After fighting so many low level undead, imagine the Paladin's surprise when he was hit for 12 damage in the first shot and almost every hit thereafter. Laying hands and healing was expended throughout the fight. Vortch continually moved to stay in the middle of the group, and there was not much room for the party to move around the hall with the portcullis still down...Link was cursed with the Lopper's axe, which wasn't very good against Vortch's damage reduction casuing the fight to last much longer than it would have otherwise, and the wizard Zarket kept deciding at the last minute that he did not want to use some of his spells...At one point an undead bane arrow was employed and all the dice turned up snake eyes. The fates were working against the PC's in the worst way. Valjean and Brother Benedict eventually took enough damage to down them, and when Link finally finished off Vortch the resulting explosion (nearly max damage rolls) finished off the Bard and Cleric. Twas a shame, as the Brother Benedict Love had finally bedded Kendra after the Firstbloom Festival the night before, after a week of wooing her.

Adventure: Broken Moon
Location: Feldgrau

The Gory Details: The party explored a couple of buildings in Feldgrau, ran into the Princes’ wolves who told them where the W.W. HQ was. The party went straight for it, the crawling hands charged out and attacked. The following round Auren Vrood flew over the party and let loose his circle of Death. Killing 2 PC’s and a cohort. This left a 8th lvl cleric, a 8th lvl Magus, and a 8th level Cleric standing. After a very long battle the PC’s were finally able to overcome Auren when his greater invisibility wore off, and the party Paladin with a fly spell cast on him charged through the air striking Auren down.

1. Blade Barrier is a straight line and cannot be curved or turned unless it is made into a ring around the caster.

2. Mirror image is a personal only spell.

3. Harm cannot reduce someone past 1 hit point.

Sounds like fun, though. Flying... porkers.

1. I don't see this in the rules; it says ..."or, a ringed wall of whirling blades with a radius of up to 5 ft. per 2 levels..." The spell is of medium range and nothing in the write up says centered on caster, so why can't the ring be just cast our at a range?

2-Paladin cast it om himself by selecting that spell with the unsanctioned knowledge feat from UM

3-yep I'm wrong on that one, if I had known I would have used finger of death instead since he rolled a one on his save the result would have been the same.

As for 1, you're right. He could just cast it at whatever caster level he wanted to get the ring the right size and put it anywhere he wanted. He just couldn't center it outside of his own line of sight. I imagine there's just something there I'm not seeing directly, like character positioning pinning him in.

As for 3, okay. You could have also just told him he died no save. I was just pointing it out in case you didn't know that he would've survived.

Name: Prospero
Race: Human
Classes/levels: Oracle of Heavens
Adventure: Side-quest between Ravengro and Lepidstadt
Location: Maidensnarl Forest
Catalyst: Barbarian Greataxe crit
The Gory Details: I'd developed a side quest to galvanize the party together. It involved the spring heeled jack and a crazy barbarian ranger cannibal. Well, as the encounter played out, round 1, Crazy Cannibal wins initiative, and charges, and crits, and I roll 46 points of damage. Game Over for the Oracle.

I ended up ruling since this character has had literally 15 minutes in the session and that because no one could remember his name. That he didn't need to make a complete reroll, just his twin brother shows up. Cheezy, but effective.

Name: Felix Grey
Race: Human (Ulfen)
Classes/levels: Fighter 12
Adventure: Ashes at Dawn
Location: Shrine of Saint Lymirin
Catalyst: Aisa Dublesse's cruelty
The Gory Details:
The party engaged Konas Esprillian and Aisa Dublesse together in the same encounter. Things didn't go well-- dominates flew, evil eyes, all kinds of bad juju. Versus Konas, the PCs were soundly winning-- but versus Aisa, they were being handily defeated.

After a few rounds, Felix Grey was knocked unconscious by Konas Esprillian. A handy dimension door had the cleric of Sarenrae there in an action with a heal spell ready. Healed to full, he battled on valiantly, fighting from the floor until Konas was finally felled to a flame strike-- but not before he rolled a critical confirm on poor Felix, dealing 2d6 bleed damage per turn. Felix almost immediately went into negatives. The party wasn't able to go save him-- they still had Aisa Dublesse to deal with.

The next round, the party had Aisa pinned in against a wall. Felix took 2d6 more bleed, leaving him at -13 or so. Aisa, out of magical spells and options, ran through the PCs, taking no damage, and centered a cloudkill spell between her and the PCs to give herself time to think. It rolled over Felix Grey, dealt 2 Con damage to him and killed him stone dead.

Immediately afterwards, Nathaniel Thorn charged through the cloud and drew a Wall of Fire through her, immolating her to death instantly.

Felix was raised the next morning, as the heroes had leveled to 13 and the cleric of Sarenrae had resurrection available.

Name: Ananti
Race: Changeling
Classes/levels: Summoner (synthesist) 3
Adventure: The Haunting of Harrowstone
Location: The Splatterman
Catalyst: The Splatterman
The Gory Details: Having already defeated The Piper of Illmarsh and Father Charlatan, the party had divided up the remaining 3 items so that they wouldn't have to dig around packs to get the right item out, and Ananti ended up with the book. When our names started appearining in blood on the walls, a combination of magic and melee defeated the haunt. When the Splatterman appeared, Ananti started ripping pages out of the book. Surviving 2 rounds of his magic missiles, she cast shield on herself. Of course, at that point he started attacking. She lasted through 2 of his attacks, being healed by both party clerics between attacks.

The third attack dropped her to -11, with an 11 Con (after the eidolon disappeared). The nearest cleric, not realizing how hurt she was, stepped over her body and dealt the final blow to The Splatterman, only to hear his companion breathe her last breath and expire beneath his feet.

Funeral rites were administered at the temple of Pharasma, and her body was shipped home to her family.

This would've been a TPK had it not been for the Harrow card/hero point system we use. (i.e. The party can burn a group card, the Uprising in this case, which they received at the beginning of the adventure to get back up should one/both of them die).

Name: Arkamit.
Race: Human.
Classes/levels: Wizard (Conjurer) / Alchemist (Mindchemist) 3 1/3 (gestalt w/ modified step system).
Adventure: The Haunting of Harrowstone.
Location: Dungeon, U2.
Catalyst: Father Charlatan Haunt.
The Gory Details: Having taken the journal from Father Charlatan's room Arkamit was the victim of the haunt. After being damaged by one of the skeletons in the beginning of the battle and failing his will save, Arkamit fell unconscious and began a battle with Father Charlatan. Eventually Arkamit managed to take out the Charlatan, but he bled out right after.

Name: Angus.
Race: Human.
Classes/levels: Cleric / Gunslinger 3 1/3.
Adventure: The Haunting of Harrowstone.
Location: Dungeon, U2.
Catalyst: Burning skeletons.
The Gory Details: While his friend was bound in chains on the floor, Angus tried desperately to single handedly take on 6-7 skeletons that had ganged up on him. An unlucky channel energy, and a few burning skeletons later had him in the negatives. While he stabilized quickly, the burning skeletons continued to torch and claw at him.

Did you intentionally give it to them at the beginning instead of using the "earned if you meet X condition" method?

Yes, as it's their only method of preventing death. Now they're without until the next card though. And low level is particularly dangerous, especially with two, although stronger characters, in encounters balanced for four. The Charlatan was a bit of a let down, though, because the player affected didn't really have any options besides rolling high on will saves.

Name: Tahl'ik
Race: Half-elf
Classes/levels: Fighter 7
Adventure: I forget the name, end of part 2
Location: Schloss Kerrimack
Catalyst: Aberrant Promethean
The Gory Details: Realizing that his party only needed a few more seconds before the Beast would come battle the Promethean, Tahl'ik valiantly blocked the Promethean as it burst through the locked metal trapdoor leading to the roof of Schloss Kerrimack. Unfortunately, the Promethean grabbed him and squeezed, ending his life but buying the Beast the time necessary to arrive.

As it's said in the AP, that encounter requires some work on the DMs part. The idea is not that you present it as 'Ok, Father Charlatan is haunting you. Roll a will save.' but to represent it as a dream sequence of sorts where he interacts with Father Charlatan in some way. Now, the description in the AP, where Father Charlatan is a priest of character's faith and he tells them that his friends have moved on yada yada, doesn't work for everyone. As such, you have to design it to suit the player. Think of something that fits the characters background.

For me, I already decided up front that Charlatan will haunt a Dwarf Inquisitor of Groetus. Since it was in his backstory that he often dreamed of being on the planet/moon Groetus. So I said that the blow of a skeleton (it happened during the fight with some skeletons and Piper) knocked him out and now he's somewhere else. He was discussing religion with Father Charlatan and he was well on the way of persuading the said inquisitor to abandon his faith, since Groetus will never crash into Pharasma's Realm. So I tell him to roll a d20 (in cases such as this it's never a good idea to reveal what is being rolled for), he succeeded, and I tell him that he figured out that priest is trying to fool him and I ask him what he wants to do next. Like the AP said, everything he does, he rolls a will save. I improvised what happened over the next few rounds, but in the end, they crashed into Pharasma's realm (along with Groetus), him laughing maniacally and Father Charlatan screaming for his life. He of course was destroyed the and the inquistor woke up.

By keeping the player out of the loop for what's going on, you're forcing him to think outside of the box in attempt to deal with a strange situation. He doesn't know what's he rolling for, because you're presenting him with an illusion that he has a choice, so he tries to think of something clever to do.

It turned out great for my party.

Oh the fluff was great, my player really enjoyed it. It was just the mechanics behind it that sort of broke with the regular haunt rules. In the haunt he tried to use disrupt undead on the priest because he realized the priest didn't actually know much about him and his friends. However, as written even that should only allow a will save, which ends up with it being a of battle who has the most hit points, rather than allowing the player to use tactics and cleverness to deal with the challenge.

Back to your regular obituaries. :)

Adventure: The Haunting of Harrowstone.
Location: Dungeon, U11.
Catalyst: Splatter Man.
The Gory Details:

Spoiler:
The Splatter Man first started by summoned his dire rats, but Arkamit dispelled it right away. After several magic missiles and healings, Arkamit put up a shield which made the Splatter Man grow tired of these kids messing with the ghosts, and began using his corrupted touch. Arkamit's pal Angus had retreated beyond the gate to shoot at a distance, so the Splatter Man focused all attacks on Arkamit. After 5-6 misses the touch finally hit and though he saved it brought Arkamit to the negatives. Angus was quick in administering a cure potion and pulled Arkamit to safety. Regrettably the next time the Splatter Man hit, Arkamit was cold as stone and very very dead.

An expensive loan with the temple of Pharasma got him back up, though with some negative levels to deal with.

Your players don't seem to have a lot of luck, I'm noticing. Arkamit has already died twice.
