Equipment for Two Handed Fighter

Advice

With a Level 7 Two Handed Fighter variant with the base 23k gold for their level, recommend me a set of equipment (not including a weapon) for the character. The character has a base 21 STR, 14 DEX, 16 CON -- DEX and CON can shift if it fits the gear better.

I know this isn't answering your question and I'm not trying to thread-jack you, but I'm running a two-handed fighter right now and I would reccomend - as soon as you can - picking up a Ring of Blinking (27,000 gp).

We have a thread discussing it right now over at: http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/paizoPublishing/pathfinder/pathfinderR PG/houseRules/soHowWouldYouHandleBlink&page=1#8

I've found it to be a superb compliment to most TH Fighters and a tremendously under-valued magic item.

As an answer to your question, off the top of my head I'd reccomend Full Plate +3 (9,000), a Cloak of Resistance +3 (9,000) and then either a Belt of Giant's Strength +2 (4,000) or a Handy Haversack (2,000) and a Ring of Protection +1 (2,000). Keep it Simple :)

What do you think of maintaining maneuverability by getting a set of Elven Chain btw?

It honestly depends on how important that mobility is to your play-style or the type of encounters you expect to face.

Personally, I absolutely love my TH Fighter but I didn't think the benefits offered by the TH Variant were worthwhile. I took the standard Fighter options and never looked back, so at 7th level my mobility in heavy armor is just fine.

Just out of curiosity, would you mind listing your Feats by level?

As a two-handed fighter, your primary goal is to deal damage, so prioritize getting the best weapon and +Strength item that you can. The rest goes to your defensive items, as you'll likely draw a lot of hate from enemies.

My perspective for Fighters, especially at low levels, is Feats for Damage, Equipment for survivability. Magic weapons cost twice a smuch as Armor and Cloaks of Resistance, and while your primary goal might be to deal damage, you'll find you deal a LOT more of it when you're alive than when you're dead.

At the risk of thread-jacking, what level are you planning on running the character up to - or would you rather not discuss your character build?

I'd be more than happy to offer you some insights into how I've built mine (also a Greatsword guy) in case there are some ideas you'd like to swap... I hate trying to tell people how they 'should build' their characters. Characters are and should be as unique as players and there's no obviously 'right way' to do things - but I am REALLY enjoying how I have my 2H Fighter set up right now :)

From a meta gamey perspective sunder is not necessarily a good thing - sure you can break the sword/wand/staff of the BBEG but often you run the risk of busting up the things you want to recover at the end of the encounter.

More than just magical items, arms and armor, Sundering helps against things like doors and other obstacles. It's not the best option but I decided to play off of what my class already had.

I don't know what I'll play up to but it's an evil campaign and I'm more or less the "enforcer" -- it's a campaign I joined in for a few months before I deploy. Go ahead and share how you built your "Greatsword Guy." I've invested the ability for mine to be good at Stealth (Highlander trait, Armor Expert trait, max ranks in Stealth, Cloak of Elvenkind and Elven Chain) since we're party of an Assassin's Guild.

+1 -- This is solid advice.

OP: Cleave and Great Cleave are kind of a trap for a 7th level fighter, who can choose to take two attacks as a full round action any, UNLESS the DM is spoon-feeding you enemies that line of for Great Cleave. I'd look to retrain Great Cleave at level 8, if you can.

These are great staples and will never stear you wrong. but consider getting an amulet of natural armor +1 and only Full plate +2.

However, as a damage oriented guy look forward to the Gloves of Dueling. They are wonderful for fighters with weapon training. however, they are 15k so you would likely have to sacrifice too much at this level to justify them. But I ouwl get them before upgrading to a +4 belt of strength since it is more bang for the buck.

use a falcata. take EWP instead of toughness. and iwould retrain great cleave into greater weapon focus

While a Falcata is cool with a 17-20/x3... Its not an awesome two handed sword. I picked the weapon because its awesome, not because its mechanically superior. I'm not really a min-maxer.

I was going to suggest folding plate, it's a +1 plate armor that as a swift(?) action, you can trigger the password and it folds up into a brooch, and vice versa. Probably great for a sneaky type who can activate the armor when its time to not be sneaky. But folding plate is kinda pricey so probably not the best item to get.

I like the folding plate! Badass, it's like you're Iron Man!
