Casting desecrate during the battle?

Rules Questions

Do you allow it or not?
PRD link

With a casting time of 1 standard action, there doesn't seem to be any reason not to allow it, as long as the caster is carrying the requisite material component. That being said, an opposing good cleric can just as easily dispel it with consecrate. Cleric battles are silly that way.

I don't see why not. Just curious, what are you reservations about it?

I agree with the "why not". Bit pricey though, and not something you can do often (unless you are in the habit of carrying around significant amounts of silver dust).

I am talking about that:

Component V, S, M (a vial of unholy water and 25 gp worth (5 pounds) of silver dust, all of which must be sprinkled around the area), DF

i am talking about the bolded part. Doesn't that mean that i have to sprinkle 5 pounds of dust in a 20 foot radius in one standart while casting my spell?

Or throw handfuls in every direction. I'm sure you can get silver dust to go 20' from you...maybe...

Yes, it can be done in battle. Handling spell components is usually free during the casting of the spell. This is an example of when it might be reasonable to require additional actions to get the dust spread out through the area. Whether this requires a tour around the room is a matter of interpretation and gaming style.

Consecrate doesn't require it and costs exactly the same. I'd ignore the dust sprinkling bit since it really looks like more of an afterthought than a piece of game mechanics.

Thank you all.

Hey Leo,

I have something here you might be interested in.

To leo:

To keep from thread jacking, I thought I would direct the fellow Synthesist fans to this home-brew I thought up. Could use some suggestions and working some kinks out. Thanks!

Ever consider that the spell itself does the spreading / sprinkling for you?

Nope.

Picture taking a handful of sand in a slightly open fist, then spinning yourself around - sand's going to go flying out in a rough circle around you. That's what I picture.

I always kind of pictured it as you throwing up the dust while chanting and the magical energies your are summoning forth spreading it for you.
