How to use (bard abilities) Fascinate and Suggestion in combat

Advice

Is it possible to use these in combat? I'm just not seeing it, but others seem to suggest (har!) that it's possible.

It just seems that any fighting will break Fascinate. Say there are 3 goblins. I try to fascinate one, while the rest of my party attacks the other two. I then try to Suggest that the other goblin attack the others, or run away. Would that work?

I have a level 12 bard, but have never used these abilities, since I'm not sure how to go about using them.

Further, Fascinate doesn't actually need you to use your instrument, correct? Say I want to fascinate a guard to let us into a city free of charge. I wouldn't have to whip out my drums and bang 'em to do it, correct?

You could simple whistle a tune to use fasinate or recite a poem or any other aspect of perform. It doesnt even have to be loud as long as the target can see/hear etc.. the performance.

The way I read facinate it is not a combat power. It states in the description of the fascinate bard ability

"The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents this ability from working."

and

"Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect."

It is something you would use to keep a few guards busy while your friends sneak around back or use it on a few guards to prevent them from investigating the distant sounds of fighting, etc...

It had a lot of potential out of combat in 3.5 because you could keep people fascinated for extended periods not so much in PF as you spend rounds rather than uses.
