When does a Summoner qualify for Extra Evolution?

Extra Evolution

Your eidolon has more evolutions.
Prerequisites: Eidolon class feature.

Benefit: Your eidolon’s evolution pool increases by 1.

Special: You can gain Extra Evolution multiple times, but only once for every five summoner levels you possess.

Since its only prerequisite is the Eidolon class feature, a 1st level Summoner should be able to qualify. On the other hand, the 'Special' part might imply, that he needs at least five summoner levels to qualify. If that's the case, he'd be only able to take the feat three times, on fifth, on eleventh and on fifteenth level.

Since the wording is similar to the Natural Armor evolution, I'd say it could be taken on first level, but I'd like to get some additional opinions on that matter.

1,6,11,16 satisfies having the "feat only once per five levels" since five levels isn't a requirement but a limitation.

So I could take it once at 1st and three times at level 15th?

if you mean taking it at 1st, 15th, 17th, and 19th , then yeah, that's how i'd see it.

@Raving Dork:

no, 3 more times at level 16.

At 15th you could have it a total of 3 times, so yes if you haven't taken this feat at all and found a way to get 3 feats when you are 15th level then yes you could take it 3 times at 15th level.

Strictly, it should probably for every five full levels (so 1st feat at 5th level), but, using the Improved Natural Armor evolution as a precedent, I'd be fine with once at 1st level, but can't get a second until 10th+, a third until 15+ and a fourth until 20+.

Not sure I understand how that relates. It can be taken at first and then not again until the character achieves their 6th Summoner level (whatever their character level might be). So the first time you take the feat, that covers the first five Summoner levels. At the 6th summoner level you open up another "block" of five Summoner levels. So assuming a pure Summoner progression with no multiclassing, you could take it at 1 and then again at 7 and then again at 11 and then again at 17. If you took it at 1 and then not again until 11, you could take it again at 13 (3 total at Summoner lvl 13), but not at 15 (since you need level 16 to open "block" 16-20 - the fourth Summoner block of five levels).

So at levels:
1-5=max 1 total time taking Extra Evolution
6-10=max 2 total times taking Extra Evolution
11-15=max 3 total times taking Extra Evolution
16-20=max 4 total times taking Extra Evolution

As written, I'd read it as such: A summoner can take it once at first level, and then additional times at 10th, 15th, and 20th. Since the special section is only talking about taking it multiple times, I don't think the limitation applies the first time you take it. However, you'll only fit the condition for taking it a second time once you have 10 levels of summoner. I'm not sure where people are getting 6th level from - maybe they're imagining that it says you can take it "one additional time for each five summoner levels after first."

Is this limitation even necessary? If the summoner spends their 1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, etc feat on Extra Evolution, they're going to be a very limited single-dimensional character.

Good question. The thing is, they're already a very limited single-dimension character and Extra Evolution plays wholeheartedly to the strength of the class. If they spent ALL their feats (1/3/5/7/etc) on Extra Evolution they could get an additional 6(7 for humans) evolution points, offsetting any points the Summoner uses and making your best class feature even better.

Half-Elves would actually do slightly better, due to their alternate favored class option. 9 extra evolution points (6 from the feat) by level 12. Ouch.

Due to the silly wording the correct progression is the same as taking the Improved natural armor evolution. i.e. at levels 1,10,15,20.

If the wording was: "You may gain Extra Evolution 1 additional time for each five summoner levels you possess." Then it would be levels 1,5,10,15,20.

Pardon the thread necro...

I know this is a contested feat, but wouldn't raw allow Extra Evolution to be taken at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20? (Yeah i know no feat selection at 20, but w/e).

Special: You CAN take this MULTIPLE times, BUT only once for every five summoner levels you possess.

That reads to me as the "for every 5 summoner levels" only applies when taking it multiple times. Meaning the first time you take it does not apply against this restriction. "You can take it multiple times, but when you do, it is only once for every 5 summoner levels you possess."

If it were meant to be Special: "You can only select this feat once every five levels." Wouldn't it have a prereq of level 5? It makes no sense to read it anyway but the way I presented it above. At least to me.

The very definition of min/max.

I was about to say, that one dimension would be very good :).

Pretty much the whole point of the Summoner class basic archetype is for your character to be the "coach" for a monster of your creation. Given that anyone playing a basic summoner would want to take the Extra Evolution feat as often as possible, a limitation on how often it can be taken is definitely necessary. Every extra evolution point you can give your eidolon is an extra option for it.

This is how we run it. It feels more like RAI and not an unfortunate wording making it hindered.

And if I remember correctly it's the way James Jacobs suggested that Improved Natural Armour works. Which makes sense for continuity with other Eidolon Feats and evolutions. Specific feats that require a level take the time to say the minimum level required and given the time that has passed for errata, this could have very easilty been changed if it wasn't working as intended.
