Thrown weapon fighter

Liberty's Edge

So this isn't an optimal idea at all, but half the fun in creating characters is making oddball ones. I'm looking at making a character that would throw weapons a lot, but not your typical thrown weapons - he thinks they're too sissy. No, he throws his battleaxe, his warhammer, his lucerne hammer...pretty much whatever weapon he has on hand, he's gonna throw it.

Looking over the classes, the two options I see are Barbarian with Hurler archetype, or Fighter. I was hopeful when I saw the Hurler archetype, but the extent of its differences from the standard Barbarian is that thrown weapons get +10' range. Not exciting, and when I started building a Barbarian, he was extremely feat-starved. So, Fighter it is.

Human Fighter
Abilities (25 point buy)
Str 16
Dex 19 (+2 racial)
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 11
Cha 7

Feats: Throw Anything, Point Blank Shot, Deadly Aim.
Traits: Indomitable Faith, Skeptic (these don't really matter much. Not going to take Heirloom Weapon or Rich Parents)

Weapons: Battleaxe, Greataxe, Lance, Longspear, Lucerne Hammer, Warhammer
Armor: Chain Shirt

As this guy levelled up, he'd pick up Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Quick Draw, Far Shot. His weapon training would focus on axes, and he'd narrow his weapon selection at that point. As quickly as possible, he'd get a +1 Throwing, Returning Battleaxe.

I think this guy would be pretty effective at low levels, but would really lose ground after awhile. The Returning weapon returns a full round after thrown, and only to the square it was thrown from, which means he's spending an awful lot of money on a weapon he can only get one attack with each round.

It's a fun concept, though.

You should really check out the Rage Powers that involve throwing, those are where the Hurling Barbarian gets fun and potentially scary.

Honestly, he can wind up throwing small trees, tables, and entire Ogre corpses at people.

On the other hand, that build is focused on throwing the largest object he can...which is rapidly going to be much bigger than any weapon. So it might not be what you're looking for.

Yeah, I didn't really want the concept of a raging barbarian who rips trees out of the ground to throw them. It was the idea of a guy who carries multiple weapons and throws them, closing to melee 2h when he runs low on weapons.

In 3.5 there was a feat called "Power Throw". All it did was let you substitute your strength for your dexterity when determining your chance to hit with thrown weapons.

There is another feat, I forget it's name. When you have quick draw, have a thrown weapon in one hand, and charge, you can throw the weapon and draw you sword and hit in melee in the same charge. I once had a Roman Soldier build who used this concept.

You can discuss such feats with your DM.

I think you could have fun if you didn't focus on a single weapon. Instead pick up Throw Anything, Improvised Weapon Mastery, Catch Off Guard, Improved Trip, Sliding Axe Throw, Bounding Hammer, Improved Bull Rush, Rapid Shot, the Vital Strike Chain, Fury's Fall, Bull Rush Strike, and Tripping Strike.

Couple of 3.5 Prestige Classes the OP might enjoy. From the Complete Warrior Manual.

Hulking Hurler, only a 3-level Prestige Class, but was restricted to Large-Sized Characters. (page 41)

Master Thrower, a 5-level Prestige Class, had some really fantastic Class Skills that made Throwing Weapons really deadly.

I think it was called "hurling charge."

Bob mentioned it in his post but a thrown weapon character may be one of the best case scenarios for the vital strike feat line, or if you could talk the GM into it Kirth Gersen's rewrite where it isn't a chain but increases as BAB rises . Coupled with fighter weapon training I could see it working it may not top the charts damage wise but wouldn't suck. Also my be worth looking into Shuriken proficiency as you could get a 50 stack of special material based thrown weapons to overcome DR.

You could use Scabbard of Vigor to get around the magical weapon problem. One cost less than a +1 weapon. So if you go with a mobile thrower and used a vital strike you would not need that many. By mid to high levels you could buy a lot of them for the price of one high level weapon. You can get 10 of them for the price you would pay for one +3 weapon.

My level 9 character still only has a mwk great sword, and three Scabbards of Vigor, I just go with +3 enchantment and that last for the whole fight most of the time.

In the UC book there is a feat called "Two Handed Thrower" couple that with Dodge, Point blank shot, Precise Shot, Quick Draw, Weapon Focus, Close quarters Thrower, Deadly Aim, and You will be a devastating Large weapon Throwing fighter. :)

Belt of Mighty Hurling allows one to use strength, instead of dexterity, for attack rolls with thrown weapons.

It's a new item in Ultimate Equipment.

There is also a belt called "Blink Back Belt"

Lets you have 2 one handed weapons that when you throw they teleport back to the belt after the attack is resolved.

The strong arm, supple wrist trait and the opening volley feat could be worth a look for such a pc.

Huh, that might sync well with the Ricochet Hammer.
