Pathfinder Campaign Setting Fansite - Any Interest?

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

A couple of years ago, I started working on a fansite for the Pathfinder campaign setting. For various reasons the project didn't get very far. I find myself having the time to dedicate to a Pathfinder fansite and I'm still very keen on the idea.

My plan is to create a place for setting-specific fan material, either for adventure paths (side treks, additional NPCs, what have) or for the setting as a whole. It'll contain both crunch and fluff as well as (I hope) modules.

My question to you guys is, is there any interest in such a site? Do you guys want a site where you can find material for the Pathfinder campaign setting and where you can submit your own material, sharing your work with your fellow GMs?

If there's an interest, is there anything you'd like to see on the site? Any specific features?

I think that would be an awesome idea.

It sounds interesting and I would appreciate the effort. My suggestion would be to look at what http://www.d20pfsrd.com/ is offering and whether it would make more sense to contribute, or to if there is another niche you can fill.

Best.

Yeah I had a look at www.d20pfsrd.com and a few other sites before writing the initial post. I feel that, while it's a fantastic resource, it's not quite filling the niche I'm looking for. With the Pathfinder Repository (working title), I hope to create a repository of material that helps in all facets of the game where the focus is entirely on Golarion to the exclusion of all other settings. Roleplaying articles, NPCs, game mechanics (monsters, spell, feats, archetypes, etc.), location writeups, essays on everything Golarion, modules and whatever else can GMs and players playng in the Pathfinder campaign setting.

There is the PathfinderDatabase for rules stuff.

And there is The Pathfinder Chronicler for fan fiction.

Both sites have pretty healthy communities, you should probably explore those a bit before duplicating a lot of existing work.

Indeed but it's my impression that the Pathfinder Database focuses on the game itself (the Pathfinder RPG) and not so much for the world of Golarion (the Pathfinder campaign setting). The focus of this site would be the Pathfinder campaign setting.

As for the Pathfinder Chronicler, I should probably say that I have no intention of hosting fan fiction. The Pathfinder Chronicler is doing a marvelous job of that, just as the Pathfinder Database is when it comes to the game itself.

I suppose the distinction is rather similar to the product lines Paizo produces. The Pathfinder Database (as I see it), is there for material not necessarily world-specific (a la the Pathfinder RPG line) whereas my site will focus on supporting the world-specific product lines (modules, adventure paths, campaign setting, player companion, and tales) with material that may either support published material or focus on areas that haven't been explored much yet in an official capacity.

Naturally other Golarion-specific media exist online (Wayfinder comes to mind) and the point of this thread is really to figure out if there's enough room in the community for a dedicated fansite that caters to players wanting to play in Golarion or if the current outlets such as Wayfinder have the Golarion community covered.

Ah. Hmm.

I'm not sure one way or the other how that would go over, I certainly haven't seen a site like that but it's hard to say whether there is a lot of demand for it. Seems like there is still a fair bit of overlap with Pathfinder DB, it's essentially a subset of what they provide with some other pieces added.

Certainly but the material featured on the Pathfinder Database isn't Golarion-centric. The material featured on this site, if it happens, will be. That's the main difference as far as game mechanics are concerned. In addition, the intent is to host fan-written modules and material that isn't necessarily directly tied to game mechanics but is still of value to players playing in Golarion, such as organization writeups, location writeups, articles on anything Golarion (I have a ton of Mendev/Worldwound articles written, for example, discussing religion in Mendev, factions, fiends and celestials, inquisitions, major historical events, just to name a few subjects).

There'll be a certain amount of overlap when it comes to the Pathfinder Database simply by because both sites contain game mechanics. That's unavoidable. The question is, is there an interest in a site that focuses exclusively on Golarion-specific game mechanics in addition to the other stuff I mentioned above.

Much to consider. Especially considering the amount of hours that'll be put into writing the site. :D

I have more than 10 Golarion specific archetypes and 4 PrCs. I have worked up a few clockworks, Numerian tech, and other misc stuff that I have yet to post. And a Golarion specific fan crunch site would be perfect to do so.

There have (or are) sites like this for the Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft and Greyhawk. Now days (especially the Greyhawk site) is keeping these settings alive as Wizards has let them go.

I think it is a great idea. I think the posters of some of the comments here are not getting the fullness of what you are looking to create. I see it as a totally different niche and would love to see it come to fruition. I think another name would be better. Somethign in Golarion in it maybe.

I wouldn't be able to contribute much at all, as my creativity when it comes to this type of stuff is very limited, but I would definitely be interested to see this website come to fruition and see what others would be able to contribute.

Sounds interesting. I'm a big Golarion fan and use the Pathfinder Wiki (Golarion setting) almost as much as the PFSRD. And it doesn't have any fan creation kind of section.

I don't want to hunt through bunches of rules for something with a hint of Golarion (being not a big rules wonk), I would prefer a repo of Golarion content like Canonfire! is for Greyhawk.

The trick is just getting enough participation; I don't use the Pathfinder Database site because there's just not much there (and what is there is often horrible grammar, etc...)

I'd suggest content be larger "article" format (instead of "subnit one trait as it occurs to you) and that the site use an engine that allows rating/comment/community editing to improve/weed the content.

I could definitely see this being of value if one of its primary focuses is actual fan-created modules and adventures, specific to the Pathfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting. It would be really nice if some sort of peer review could be established for such content as well, inspired by the process utilized by the Chronicler for fan fiction.

And perhaps, if such a community really takes off, a free pdf magazine could be put out to accompany Wayfinder, a fan-created publication emulating Dungeon magazine in the same manner that Wayfinder draws the idea for much of its focus from Dragon.

I would very much enjoy (and aim to contribute to) a site like this.

The ability to provide a rating or a comment to something is definitely something that'll be part of the site. I see game design as an incredibly creative process and what better way to improve your writing than constructive criticism from your fellow gamers?

As for article vs. one game mechanic, I'll embrace everything I get but as I'm a fan of more indepth articles myself that's definitely something I hope to see a lot of.

Okay, so a new name, eh? Any suggestions?
