Hi All,
I stumbled across the Sun blade via another post and found that it is a weapon that has been converted from previous versions of D&D. So now in the current rule set, can you technically create a sun blade because some of the components don't really exist anymore.
Or is it a case with a specific weapon that there is a template/recipe to follow and that is how the item is created.
Just find that it has a construction line, so technically should be able to make it right?
Reason why I'm asking is that I'm looking at an Arcane Dualist Bard build, and think a sun blade would be create as a bonded item.

A sunblade is a specific magical weapon on page 476 of the core rulebook. The availability of magical items is determined by your dm.
If by bonded item, you mean the wizards arcane bond, you could start off with a masterwork.. bastard sword? short sword?
If your dm allows you to craft the specific weapons from the book, you could probably come to an agreement with him for creating it over time. But it's definitely a dm adjudication thing.

Bonded item is a side not, more just interest if you can create "specific" items at all.
In general you can craft "specific weapons", since they have listed construction requirements and are not minor artifacts.
You could start with a masterwork bastard sword as a bonded weapon and make it into a sun blade. I'd probably allow you first to build up its non-unique properties, up to something like a +2 undead bane bastard sword or +2 holy bastard sword. Neither is exactly equivalent, so the sun blade powers would replace the special effect later. To get the specific sun blade powers, you'd have to improve it in one hit up to the full sun blade's value.

I kind of wonder from time to time if such a weapon could be created as a longsword....
It could be a Small bastard sword, but a Medium character could then only wield it as a bastard sword (or in two hands as a martial weapon) since a Small shortsword is too light for him to wield. The other sun blade properties would still work.
If not a bastard sword, it's no longer the same as the specific weapon described. The GM could allow it as a house rule.

Its the Wielding Bastard Sword as Short Sword which has me most interested in it.
This sword is the size of a bastard sword. However, a sun blade is wielded as if it were a short sword with respect to weight and ease of use. In other words, the weapon appears to all viewers to be a bastard sword, and deals bastard sword damage, but the wielder feels and reacts as if the weapon were a short sword. Any individual able to use either a bastard sword or a short sword with proficiency is proficient in the use of a sun blade. Likewise, Weapon Focus and Weapon Specialization in short sword and bastard sword apply equally, but the benefits of those feats do not stack.
But without an actual reference, the Sunblade is the only option.

Creating a sun blade is easy. First, you get yourself a masterwork bastard sword (we know it is a bastard sword because it costs 35gp rather than 10gp of a short sword).
Next, you gather the components needed to enchant it. You will need the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat, ranks in Spellcraft, and 25,000gp worth of enchanting materials.
Then you spend 50 days enchanting the item, after which time you make a Spellcraft check versus DC 15 (20 if you don't know the daylight spell or want to half the crafting time, DC 25 for both).
If you succeed, the bastard sword becomes lighter as it transforms into a sun blade. Congratulations.
If you fail the check, however, you lose the entire 25,000gp investment as well as all that time, though you still have a non-magical masterwork bastard sword should you wish to try again. So sorry.
If you fail by 5 or more, you end up with a cursed sword instead. Scary.
Like I said: It's easy.
What is there to be confused about?

Well, or either 100 days while adventuring...
I would allow a player to do what Ravingdork said. It seems reasonable.
Seems reasonable? That's the RAW!
Also, wouldn't it take 200 days while adventuring? (Or half if you increased the DC.)

There is a 3PP about one hundred and something magic weapon properties where one is listed as a+1 that changes weapon category so the weapon wields as one category smaller (2handed-1handed-light). Only available for melee weapons. Marketprice would be 8000 then.
@Ravingdork:
It would take 25 days (1 day per 1000gp), *4 for travelling/adventuring
(4 hours spent on 2 hours progress), 1/2 with +5 DC, so you are at 50 days again. Of course if you craft the sword yourself, it takes longer.

I'm not sure I'd come across the sunblade before. I'm now having visions of a dual-wielding fighter with a Large sunblade in one hand and a medium one in the other - to him, it's effectively a pair of shortswords (with mods of -4/-2 from size and dual-wielding), but to everyone else (and for damage purposes) he's dual-wielding two bastard swords, one of which is large enough that he ought to need two hands to swing it...
