It seems like every six months, the PbP forums become flooded with new PbPs for the latest adventure path. Totally understandable, and certainly exciting. Right now, someone who wants to play in a Carrion Crown game should have little trouble finding or starting one. But there seems to be a dearth of older APs starting up. There are reasons for this, of course, but I thought I'd mix things up a little and run Rise of the Runelords. I've had this thing sitting on my computer for several months now, and I think it's high time I do something with it. So here we are with a shiny new recruitment thread for Paizo's first AP.
I'll be looking for four to five players, and there will, of course, be rules, but we'll get to those in a moment. Go ahead and post your character concepts here, but I won't be selecting players for a couple days, so don't worry, this isn't a race. The winners are likely to be those with good, solid backstories that tie in well with the campaign. Roleplaying will be a major focus in this AP, so backstories are important. If you give me a couple sentences, you're chances are pretty poor. If you give me five paragraphs, I won't necessarily strike you out, but if you sound like a deva, well... Just remember roleplaying we want to involve everyone. Anyways, here are the rules you ought to be familiar with.
I would ask that everyone read the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide if you have not already done so. For those that know little of RotRL, you will be starting in the town of Sandpoint.
Valid sourcebooks for this game are the Core Rulebook, the Advanced Player's Guide, the Inner Sea Primer, and the Inner Sea World Guide. Only core races will be allowed. If you are a human (or a half-elf), I'd encourage you to select an ethnicity. If you would like to use something from another book, I may allow it, but run it by me first. The magus will be allowed, so long as you agree to make any necessary changes upon release of Ultimate Magic. With Ultimate Combat still being a few months off, I don't really want any Gunslingers, Samurai or Ninjas.
Evil character are not disallowed, but if you wish to play one, you must present them in such a way to convince me that they will not be disruptive to play. Sociopaths will be vetoed (no Antipaladins).
We will use 20 point buy, and as far as gear goes, take the maximum possible roll for your class. You may purchase any mundane gear listed in the allowed books, and magic items worth 50gp or less (if you're a fighter and you feel like just have to start with a potion of cure light wounds in your hand). After first level, hit points are half the maximum roll +1. Finally, those who play human PCs acquire one additional language. This must be a regional language appropriate to your race (Ulfen would get Skald, Varisians would get Varisian, ect...). Chelaxians and Taldans get any regional bonus language of their choice.
A couple of my house rules: Archtypes are certainly allowed, I love those things, but you many not select more than one archtype for a given character class, even if none of the sacrificed abilities overlap.
As far as combat goes... I'm afraid I'm not too tech-savvy, and China has blocked a lot of the tools that would normally be useful in mapping combats. Because of this, we shall be relying on the marvelous power of imagination. Mapless combats shall be the order of the day! Yes, I know that this can make (or gimp) area of effect spells or attacks of opportunity, but as I said, combat is not the primary focus of this game, and the afore-mentioned mechanics are certainly not going to disappear entirely.
In the sense of fairness and trust, I'll use the forum's die roller thingamagig for NPCs and monsters during combat, though you might not be privy to what all the rolls are for. Outside of combat, some rolls may well be secret.
As you may have gathered from the last item, I am currently in China, putting me on GMT+8. Shouldn't be too much of a problem on here, just want you to understand that I might be posting at weird hours for many of you.
And regarding posts, I would ask each player to commit to one post per day. I don't think this is particularly taxing, and it needn't be long or involved if you're busty. If you miss a day here and there, I'm not going to fuss about it, but if you miss three consecutive days without notification, we will begin looking for a replacement. This is especially important in combat. I'm normally loath to resort to these methods, but in the spirit of keeping things moving, if we're in combat and you take more than 24 hours to post your action, I will puppet your character for that round (But don't worry about me being intentionally ineffectual. Unless I thought it would be funny).
Finally, I'd like you all to post your character information in the profile of your alias. I know almost everyone does, but I do see exceptions from time to time. Format isn't really an issue, as long as I can understand it.
Finally, I'll obviously be doing some conversions of my own to update RotRL for PFRPG, and in doing so, I may take some liberties with the encounters (especially if we end up with five players).
So I believe that's about it. Let's see if we can drum up some interest, and in a couple days, hopefully, we'll get this off the ground
Azoun The Sage

Well you shouldn't have too much of an issue getting interest. I for one would be interested in it but i'm already currently playing in that AP here on the boards and am trying to get into a kingmaker or Carrion Crown campaign.
I've noticed several new posters posting up looking for a PBP so you're likely to get some fresh blood. :D
GM Lorebane
Ah! I knew I was forgetting something important. The Rise of the Runelords adventure path contains some events, creatures, and images that are not what you would mellow, and more than a passing nod will be given to these instances. Don't get me wrong, I have no intention of making these the focus of the game, they are a part of it. If you feel you will be made uncomfortable by goblins eating babies, ogres engaging in incestuous acts (these are mostly implied), or the predations of crazed serial killers, then you may wish to look elsewhere.
Shadowborn
If you give me five paragraphs, I won't necessarily strike you out, but if you sound like a deva, well... Just remember roleplaying we want to involve everyone. Anyways, here are the rules you ought to be familiar with.
I'll throw my hat into the ring. My character background happens to be exactly five paragraphs. That's okay, I always wanted to be a good outsider... ;-)
Vors Malcroft, Human (Taldan) Paladin of Erastil
Vors is the son of Amaldis and Celestine Malcroft. His father was once a knight in Andoran, but a scandal drove their family out of the country when Vors was still a small boy. They traveled far, finally settling in the communal farming area of Whistler’s Grange, about a day’s ride south of Sandpoint. There the family started over. For Vors, Andoran was half dream, half memory; his main reminders were the nights his father spent drinking and his mother’s distant sadness when she stared out the eastern window of their cottage. The only thing Vors knows for certain is that he once had two older brothers, both of whom are dead. A sister, Evelina, was born to his parents a few years after settling at the grange.
Three major forces have shaped Vors’ life in the last sixteen years. First, there were his daily drills with the members of the grange militia, from the time he was twelve. At times, after drinking enough spirits to lighten his mood but not wallow in misery, Vors’ father would critique his son’s progress. Then he would tell him tales of the battles in Andoran. Or he’d read books brought with them from their former homeland—lineages of gentle houses—and show the various coats of arms and maps of famous battle sites.
Then there was Kyras. He was an old half-elf and itinerant priest of Erastil. During the times he visited the grange, Vors would listen intently as he read from the Parables of Erastil. It was not the moral lessons that interested him at that age, but rather the tales and the skill with which Kyras told them. In time Vors saw the grange as a gift from Erastil to his family.
Finally, there are the recent unfortunate events in his family. His father lost a leg three winters ago, when a carthorse bolted. Amaldis was knocked down and the wagon went over him. Vors and the rest of the community took over the share of the work he could no longer do, of course, but Amaldis became embittered. A year later, at midwinter, he took up his crutch and hobbled out into the night during a snowstorm. The grangers found him the following evening, sitting frozen against a tree, clutching an empty jug. Celestine took fever the next spring and followed her husband into death, leaving Evelina in Vors’ care.
“Adversity is the kiln that fires the clay, the forge that heats the iron for shaping. Only under its heat are we tempered to hold firm.” – from the Parables of Erastil. Vors knows now that the grange truly is a gift from Old Deadeye. They are an extended family that supports him and his sister, as they support the family in turn. During this time of grief and healing, Vors has had his calling. He will be one to fight for tradition, for family, for community. Like the knights of his birth land, he will take up arms when needed to defend the common good. In times of peace, however, he will take up the plough, the hoe, the hammer and nail, and continue to work for the betterment of all.

This is what I've got. I may flesh it out some more if you choose me. I don't honestly know how to hide spoilers. I hope what I tried worked.
GM Lorebane
I'm assuming Haken is a druid?
One last thing I forgot to mention earlier: XP is being tossed out the window in this game. For the APs to run smoothly, you kind of need to level up at a certain pace anyways, and converted a 3.5 AP to work for the PFRPG experience tracks is something I'd rather not tackle right now, so instead, you'll be periodically leveling up at appropriate points in the adventures, usually keyed to important events. I know it's a bit of a break from tradition, but I feel like experience points are pretty superficial in APs, so we're really just peeling off some mechanical fluff.
Nelrem Ojen
|
Here's my concept for consideration:
Nelrem Ojen, Evil Elven Summoner.
Nelrem prefers to solve all his decisions in life by coin flip. He always has his lucky coin in his hand flipping it constantly. A nervous habit at times, or a decision maker when needed.
His actions can seem callous, or evil, to some, but this is not how he sees the world. He sees it as an animal would, the strong survive, there are no wrong choices, there are no emotions, and sometimes you need to burn it all down and start over again.
Nelrem has a talent for magic, and the profession of a Summoner came natural to him. He was able to make mystical contact with a being of pure energy and bargained with it to bring it into this world as his Eidolon, all of Nelrem's violence is now handled through his creation, something he is rather fond of.
Nelrem's major goal is to attain more power, so that he can create a better, and stronger Eidolon. He has no qualms about working with others to do so, a wolf pack is stronger for every wolf. He just want's to either be the alpha, if given the chance.
Nelrem absolutely abhors violence, unless performed by Eidolon proxy, and will not wield a weapon of any kind. he makes concessions for spellcasting, but prefers to augment or pamper his Eidolon with spells to assist it in doing it's job.
Nelrem would be visiting Sandpoint for the glassworks, he respects works of art and wishes to inspect the factory further. He has a keen eye for architecture, and is a bit star struck by the thought of seeing the process of turning sand to colored glass.

Interestingly enough I made a Half Orc Summoner JUST now, and would love to give him a shot:
Growing up as a half orc is hard enough, but when you are abandoned as a child in the wilds it can be downright deadly. That is what happened to poor Terrick. Luckily for Terrick he was found by a wandering human ranger within a day of his...disposal. The ranger, named Harkin, had pity on the poor mewling babe, who looked more human then orcish, and took him under his wing. Travelling the world, Terrick grew up surrounded by animals and the wilderness, occasionally going into towns to shop. His dark green skin and small fang betrayed his orcish heritage however, and he had no friends beyond animals.
One day, however, during his 7th year of life, Terrick had an event that changed things dramatically for him. One night while his father was setting up camp Terrick drew in the dirt. By chance, he drew an arcane symbol which, thanks to his latent and untapped abilies, called out into the ether. Within a few moments a small spirit appeared in front of him, startling him and his father equally. The creature then spoke directly into the mind of Terrick, and asked why he had summoned it. Terrick, being young and lonely quickly answered that he wanted a friend. Harkin stared at the events in front of him and took a step towards the pair. Before he could reach them though the spirit become a small dog like creature, and Terrick quickly squeled with childish joy and grabbed the creature up. Harkin decided then and there to take his son into nearby Oppara to visit a local gnomish mage he knew by the name of Beron. The creature, which still looked like a dog, had deep green fur and red eyes, and only 3 toes on each limb.
Once they arrived in Oppara, Terrick was quickly ushured, along with his new friend who he had dubbed Nessen, to visit Beron. Beron took one look at Nessen and cocked an eyebrow, and Harkin quickly explained what had happened.
Beron smiled and spent a few moments puttering around the pair before turning to Harkin and explaining that Terrick had latent arcane powers, and those powers had summoned a companion for him. Terrick was a natural summoner. Harkin asked what they could do, and Beron suggested that he could teach the boy.
Over the next few years Terrick spent his time with Beron, learning the ways of the summoner. Beron found that the lad was quick of mind, if a bit absent minded and prone to doing things that defied common sense. The creature Nessen helped as best it could to curb this instances. Harkin came frequently to visit his foster son, and was proud as the young boy mastered his powers and Nessen evolved.
After 10 years of training, Terrick left Beron to begin to hone his skills in the real world. Nessen had evolved to the point where it walked on 2 legs, and was a terrifying beast to everyone but Terrick. To the half orc, Nessen was always a little puppy.
And I am posting on his new alias (gotta pick an avatar) so you can view his info iffen ya so choose.

Please allow me to present Caeluis True, Late of Magimar.
Note: This is a sparce backgroung compared to my usual but I am leaving things more open so you can tie Caelius to the plot. The identity of the house is left open as well as the details of the shipment. If you want I can easily fill these in. In playing Caelius I want to see if someone without scars or dark secrets can become a hero. This AP is, at least at the beggining, rather light. I hope to see how Caelius darkens as things progress.
I will have no problem at all with the posting schedule. I also really like the way you are dealing with exp. A friend if running Council of Theives and doing the same thin. It works very well.
I love the idea of going map-free. I play this way in RL and look forward to seeing how it works on PbP.
Hope to hear from you

Forgot to say WHY Terrick is in Sandpoint! He travelled there as he is searching out forgotten lore regarding summoning and extra planer creatures, and heard that there are several ruins in that region where he could find information about such things.
So he is trying to secure lodgins in the town so he can sally forth with his best friend Nesser.
Park
Park is a half-orc.
Oh, maybe I should add some more. :)
Park was born on the outskirts of the rough and tumble town of Riddleport. There he ran the hills and cliffs while still but a little child. That is, he did until some slavers killed his family and captured him. He lived a short while in that miserable environment surrounded by people with little humanity left to them. But, Park would not have his freedom denied, he broke free from his bonds and gave the slavers a great chase through the city before finally losing them by stowing away on a ship.
Fearing he would be caught, Park leapt from the boat upon spying land, and swam to shore. Ashore in Sandpoint, a world apart from that which he had always known. Fearful of being caught, Park ran from everyone he encountered, including Sheriff Belor Hemlock, until finally meeting Kendra Deverin, the mayor of Sandpoint. She treated him kindly, and Park slowly began to realize that there were people here he could trust. A world that he never even dreamed could exist was in front of his eyes.
In the couple of years since, Park has tried to adapt here. He even tries to return te good will he has felt, helping people out with his hands and back. He occasionally performs tricks of acrobatics on the streets for children to watch and he doesn't even mind too much when a newcomer to the town is taken aback at a grin from his great toothy maw. Park has found paradise in the idyllic Sandpoint.
So, he is a half-orc rogue. :P
I will get all his info a little later, the above is just the backstory.

@ Stomphoof (Terrick)
I noticed that the two traits you chose were "adopted" and "world traveler". As I understand it, when the APG stated "may immediately select a race trait from your adoptive parents' race.", it means go ahead and select one without the need to spend your second trait. So, I think you get one more and that the human trait taken does not have to be your second trait. But, this is only my opinion, and I could be looking at this more advantageously as a player.

I was not sure honestly, so right now I just have the one. If I get a second one then I will pick one and add it :)

This is what I've got so far. I'll finish him up if you decide to have me in the party roster. As for his second trait, I was thinking Favored Son (one of the James Jacob's campaign traits) if you'll allow it. Since Vors lives nearby, he'd probably be in Sandpoint to attend the dedication of the new temple.
Vors Malcroft
Probably should be okay. What does Favored Son do?
Favored Son/Daughter
You were born and raised in the town of Sandpoint or its surrounding farms. You know many of the region’s secrets, and the locals already know who you are. You are well liked in town, and you’ll have lots of friends in the region, but the town’s tougher side sees you as a snitch or a pansy. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge (local) checks, and Knowledge (local) is always a class skill for you. In addition, you can choose any one law-abiding citizen of Sandpoint from below as an ally; depending on the person you pick, you’ll get different benefits.Ameiko Kaijitsu (local noble and owner of the Rusty Dragon Inn): Ameiko is one of Sandpoint’s most influential and beloved nobles. Her inn/tavern is the most popular in town, and as one of her friends, you’re guaranteed a place to eat and sleep for free. She’s got lots of
great contacts with merchants as well, and she’ll sell any of your loot for you—as a result, you gain an additional 10% over the amount of gp you normally would get from selling off treasure.Belor Hemlock (town sheriff ): Belor, Sandpoint’s no nonsense arm of the law, is like the uncle you never had. The benefits of being close friends with the town sheriff are extensive, and you can call in favors from him once per game session. A favor can either get you out of a legal jam, hook you up with a town guard for help, or give you a onetime
+10 bonus on a Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate check made against any local person.

Submiting myself for consideration. This is a character I started out wtih in a prior PbP that fizzled you can see my stat block in addition to the posts I have placed in the prior PbP. If the story is appealing and you like the flavor I can bring, I can certianly find a reason for being in Sandpoint. Thanks for your time!

FWIW, I played with P'Aye in that fizzled PBP, and thought she (though IIRC, the player's actually a guy?) did a really nice job. She was the higlight of the few pages of posts, IMO. (P'Aye, if this board had a PM system, I was going to invite you to join the Kingmaker campaign I'm running a few months ago when we needed replacement players. I think I may have even posted in that dead PBP though if I did, you'd obviously given up watching it...)
That said, I'll pitch this idea, as I seem to have had another PBP fizzle out on me and I'm anxious to actually play one as well as run one (which you can check out here, if you want to check out my posting style, Lorebane.)
Calumny "Calla" Tas'vere caused her first deaths moments after her birth, the start of her life story also the end of a tragic tale.
When Arli Tas'Vere conceived, it brought joy to her husband Ryark and the rest of the house of Tas'Vere, a minor Chelaxian noble family. Unfortunately, the joyous tidings were also the chance a rival of Ryark's had been looking for. He began spreading rumors that Arli Tas'Vere had been unfaithful and that the child now growing in her womb was a mysterious lover's, and not Ryark's.
Nine months later, much of Magnimar high society believed that the babe was the product of an illicit union despite the Arli's protests. Then, on the day of Calla's birth, an apparently careless servant's remark about the controversy, seemingly overheard by chance, sent Ryark into a rage. Hearing the newborn girl's cries, he burst into the birthing room and grabbed the babe from the stuned, exhausted Arli.
"This girl is no daughter of mine," he declared, "but still I shall give her life." He commanded the midwife, despite the protests of his wife, to take the child to Calistria, insisting only that she be called Calumny -- saying she should always be reminded of the lies that were her mother's claims of fidelity. Arli never emerged alive from the birthing room, a tragic loss of blood from the childbirth Ryark told his peers, though rumors would forever cling to him about more sinister circumstances.
Now, 20 years later, Calumny Tas'Vere, called Calla by those who know her, has become an inquisitor for the faith that raised her. She has a surprisingly sunny personality, though some say that simply masks a darkness that lingers from the way she came into this world. Revenge isn't just a concept to her, but has defined the entire course of her life.
It's for revenge, after all, that she has come to Sandpoint. Her father finally discovered the truth of his rival's plot and approached his daughter to try to make amends. She listened carefully to his story and when he finished, without a word she turned and left the room and the city, deciding her revenge for spending the first 20 years of her life without parents would be to deny her presence now that they desired it.

I just want to submit my interest in this game. I have a gnome alias I didn't get to use very much, so I'll reuse him.
Driven out of his home because of his destructive habit, this pyromaniac has set out for Sandpoint in an attempt to put his talent to good use. He's never actually hurt anyone with his fires, but the costs as a result of destroyed property adds up and tempers rise after a while. While in Sandpoint, it was mentioned that he'd want to find someone by the name Kaijitsu, as this person does fantastic work with glass. Something "Hal" can appreciate greatly after trying to make his own in an beach incident involving singed eyebrows and very angry people.
This character is a Gnome Sorcerer with the pyromaniac alternate race feature, and the fire element bloodline.

Looks like we're up to ten applicants. Given the speed at which this post accumulates interest, I'll probably be selecting five players later this evening (8-10 hours) and put up the OOC thread. Tomorrow and Friday are my "busy days" at work, so we'll use that time to get kinks hammered out and character concepts finalized, and Friday evening, I hope to have an IC thread going.

Alright, I've given it some thought, and this one was definitely a toughy! Lots of good character ideas here, and in the end, I tried to select a group that seemed like it would strike a good balance of solid characterization, party composition, and PC interaction. There were a few good concepts that, I'm sorry to say didn't make it in either because of too much potential conflict with another PC or too much overlap (mechanically or thematically). In any case, the winners are...

Congratulations to those of you who made it in. The OOC thread can be found here. To those who didn't make the cut, I thank you for your time and interest. If this doesn't prove to be too draining, I've still got four other APs, and I might start up one of those. Should that happen, I'll make the first notice here.

Well, it appears that one of our players has opted to drop out. It's been several days, and he has yet to post, so I return first to the original recruitment thread to find a replacement! You have missed nothing so far. I have made the introductory post, and a few PCs have responded, so you don't have to worry about coming into the game late.
If you are still interested in this game, please respond by this evening. If I see a solid candidate, you're in, but if nothing comes up by then, then back to the Paizo community I go!
The current party consists of a bard, a paladin, a druid, and a wizard. There has been a change to the rules in that evil PCs will no longer be admitted on the grounds of a high chance of irreconcilable conflict with the rest of the party.

Alright, Motteditor, Calla is in. She was my 6th choice, actually. I love the backstory, and I'm honestly a bit curious to see how our homebody paladin will get along with our two Calistrites. Go ahead and hike over to our IC thread (link posted earlier in this thread) to find a link to our IC thread. Go ahead and bring your inquisitor into the game (its fine even if your stats aren't quite finished yet), and we'll get this beast rolling again.
