Holy Vindicator - Maximize your AC!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

So I currently have a cleric in PFS who has taken 2 levels of Holy Vindicator. When he's buffed, he has a 39 AC / 15 Touch / 38 AC Flat. By the time he reaches Level 12, he will have at least a 42 AC.

Base: 10
Armor: +11 (+2 Full Plate)
Shield: +5 (+3 Heavy Steel Shield)
Magic: +1 (Amulet of Natural Armor +1)
Dex: +1

So at a base he has a 28 in AC.

Vindicator's Shield: +7 (7d6 channeling - 5d6 base + 2d6 from Phylactery of Positive Channeling)
Stigmata: +1 Sacred Bonus
Shield of Faith: +3 (CL 9)

For the future, I plan on:
- adding another +1 to both the base armor and shield.
- being able to channel 8d6, so a +8 bonus instead of +7.
- bump up the AMA to a +2 or higher.
- possibly making my +1 sword defending.

I feel my only real weakness is if I run against a lot of creatures with touch attacks. I'm not too concerned about much else, considering most things will need a 20 to hit me in PFS play.

Anyway, does anyone else have ridiculous AC builds for PFS?

You've run with my fighter/paladin, but I only get up to 37, and that's with expertise+fight defensively.

I've had thoughts of an Aldori Swordlord Fighter Archetype/Duelist, but I'm saving that for Kingmaker.

At level 12 he'd have 28 base, I believe.

Mage Armor +4 Armor (either borrowed via a Pearl of Power or UMDed)
Dodge +1 Dodge
11 DEX (24 DEX + 18 INT)
Alodori Dueling Mastery +2 Shield

If he gets a round to buff
Shield +4 Shield (UMD, doesn't stack with dueling mastery)

When attacking:
Fighting Defensively +5 Dodge (-2 attack, thanks to Steel Net)
Combat Expertise +4 Dodge (-4 attack)

When full attacking +2 Dodge vs Melee Attacks (Defensive Parry)

When activating Boots of Speed +1 Dodge (Haste)

When focusing on one opponent with Osyluth Guile +2 Dodge

So, all-out this is 44 with a touch of 36. Flat-Footed is awful, though. Just 16 (18 with Shield)

[EDIT]
Forgot to factor in Threatening Defender. He's only -3 from Expertise. -6 for +9, not too shabby, though.

[EDIT x2]
I'm an idiot. I forgot the Amulet of Natural Armor +2 and Ring of Protection +2.

Standard 32/20/24
All-Out 48/22/38

Considering the high frequency of BBEG sorcerers in PFS play, I would say having a low touch AC, especially at mid/high-tier is a big risk.

Aside from that, why would you want to build a PC that is nearly invincible? Doesn't it take some of the fun out of the game knowing that you cannot get hit and therefore the chance of death is near zero? The game starts to feel like a video game with the god code activated.

Believe me, as someone who plays an AC 30+ character, 20's happen. Sometimes they happen twice in a row. Besides, you need someone able to take hits from a stone golem, and avoiding those 2d10+lots hits tends to be better than sitting there and eating damage. (And even with high 30's AC, the golem can hit... oh can he hit.)

Honestly, the satisfaction of a BBEG flailing harmlessly against my defensive might is pretty fun. Similar to when you get your big crit with a x4 weapon.

Besides, Fireball still deals damage, trust me. God code it is not.

The only reason I have such a high AC is because I'm the party cleric for a lot of groups. 39 AC with 10 7d6 channels to spare (1 is spent on the Vindicator's Shield) saves a lot of groups. I can't hit for crap and I spend my encounters buffing the party.

/I just happened to stumble upon the Holy Vindicator when I got the APG. I IMMEDIATELY knew I had to go that route with my cleric.
//You would probably be shocked with all the things I keep track of and try to figure out in the PFS world.

If you want a bigger AC, the simplest way is trying to get your Natural Armor bonus bigger. You could also get some deflection bonus from a nice ring of protection.

I was under the impression that you could not stack the stigmata sacred bonus with the Vindicator's shield, which is also a sacred bonus. am i wrong here?
And the stigmata takes a standard action, as does casting the buffs..how many rounds of combat does it take you before you actually get to take a swing at something? My HV usually only has time to cast a buff or activate his stigmata. And by then he usually has to spend the rest of the combat healing our front line fighters, so it's a wash anyway. It's nice that his 39 AC keeps him from getting hit much at all, but my DM can't have that, so we fight things that can hit my Ac, meaning the rest of the party gets missed on a 1. So even being the party's secondary healer, my awesome HV can do little else but to heal, and this awesome character is wasted. Don't concentrate on you Ac is what i'm saying here.
Or do, it's your game. But try using you stigmata to up your saves instead. I find that works out better in the long run.

Sacred and dodge bonuses stack. :)
