Thread Necromancy

Website Feedback

Someone dragged up an old thread of mine and someone else made the commented of thread necromancy being frowned upon.

Now this is a pretty friendly board so let me put this to you.

would you prefer people use the search function to find answers to their questions and then if that leads to further questions have them post in the thread they found or make a new thread ?

because honestly you could quite easily call someone just as easily on making a thread about a topic already discussed just as much as you could call them on thread necromancy.

If someone misses a discussion and wants to contribute their thoughts to the discussion which is the lesser fopar for you, new post about old topic or thread necro ?

Unless somebody is making a blatant attempt to stir up a long dead debate, there shouldn't be anything wrong with recycling a thread.

I would rather see people taking the time to search and read through old threads than to see the same old subjects over and over again when the answer is in another thread. Even if the issue is not a rules issue, many time the new thread does not bring any new views to the table so it is better to just read the old on. If the thread is has a lot of page then I can understand not wanting to read the entire thing, but since it will most likely duplicate the old thread you will eventually end up doing that anyway.

I can't wait to use Necromancy on this thread in a year!!! ;)

Better to expand upon an existing thread than to rehash things in a new one.

This has never seemed to be the general consensus here.

Good-natured comments about a necro'd thread? Sure, especially when it's an OLD thread, but as mentioned, unless it's resurrected to post something negatively, then it's all good.

Me personally, I'd love it, since it makes it easier for ME to reference and find. That said, the only time I become frustrated at a new post asking an old topic is when they happen within days (or even hours) of another thread on the exact same topic.

Personally, I'm not against thread necromancy, unless it's to resurrect a contentious thread either deliberately or accidentally. There's a reason we don't automatically lock threads once they go into the archives.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I would think that resurrecting old threads for relevant questions would be preferable to adding new threads to rehash the same topic endlessly
(how many times do we have to cover the rules on how to create magic items? :D )

Of course, some of the obscenely huge threads, and the true flame wars are better left to die in bscurity while a new thread is started (maybe it IS better to start a new thread on magic item creation ;) )

Scarab Sages

I like being reminded of an old thread when it contains posts from The Usual Suspects from the old days.

Some of those people have moved on to new pastures, either making the jump to professional writing, leaving the hobby, or are no longer with us, and it's pleasant to be reminded of them.

A notable exception is in the Customer Service threads. Looking at old CS thread to see if its answer works in your situation is good, tacking on a question regarding a new and different order/account is discouraged.

Was that because of the horse-card thread?

No, but that thread made me think of adding the above :o)
