This short story appeared in the New Yorker.

Not meaning to steal your thunder, but this is rather old news here on these boards...

Oh, well, guess I should have checked the date on the story.

I would say thanks for sharing, but that is the bleakest, weakest "Cactcher in the Rye" story I have ever read. And, I feel insulted that it's a "D&D" story. Even at 14 my games were never like that.

*shakes head*

Man, are all New Yorker stories such downers?

LOL.

I saw this Thread and I was like, "Ah cool, again -- it seems like only a year ago there was another Thread talking about D&D in the New Yorker."

Despite old news, "The Dungeon Master" was quite a good story, could have been better written but it was otherwise very good.

Apparently.

On second thought though, calling this a 'story' was a mistake. Nothing really happens; characters don't grow, nobody accomplishes anything -- except the DM who kills another PC. It's actually just a scene that ends with what might be a character growth catalyst if the writer had continued -- "That senior loser is your DM right?"

Bah, whatever.

Did you only read the first page? It took me a bit to notice the very, very small page markers underneath.

I actually quite enjoyed it; certainly not the most uplifting short story I've read, but still interesting.

Um, wow. My bad.

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen it before.

Rather bleak, but a good story.

The New Yorker has always been a duck for rarefied tastes It's also the original origin of the Addams Family as a series of macabre one panel strips created by Charles Addams, a bit of an odd duck himself. :)

Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc (pseudo-Latin: "We gladly feast on those who would subdue us")

Addams Family Motto.
