Question Concerning the Feat: Iomedaean Sword Oath

Rules Questions

According to the Archives of Nethys (long may he reign):

Quote:

Iomedaean Sword Oath

Source Pathfinder #26 72

By swearing to never use a weapon other than a longsword, you can achieve things normally limited to the most highly trained swordsmen.

Prerequisites: Proficient in longsword, Weapon Focus (longsword), base attack bonus +4, worshiper of Iomedae.

Benefit: You may select longsword-related feats as if you were a 4th-level fighter. For example, you may select Weapon Specialization (longsword) as a feat.

Special: If you ever use a melee or ranged weapon other than a longsword in combat, you lose the benefits of this feat until you receive an atonement spell. You may still use spells that act as weapons (such as flame blade and spiritual weapon) without affecting your oath.

My question is this. If a character takes this feat, does he or she immediately get to take a fighter feat of the appropriate level? Or does taking this feat just mean that in the future the character can take such feats?

I think it means that you can take fighter feats in the future.

Well, I'll have to take another look at the fighter only feats, the ones 4th lvl and below, anyway, but doesn't this seem like a terrible trade off?

It is.

All longsword related feats that need fourth level fighter
Weapon Specialization
-end

No feat I am aware of needs less, so really that is what you are getting. Spend two feats for weapon spec that goes away if you ever make a physical attack with anything other than the longsword. I hope you never get disarmed, because if you make any other attack, say with your fists, you lose the feat and the weapon spec feat too. A dumb feat if I have ever seen one, at least at present.

Scarab Sages

I believe Sean has suggested in the past that giving this feat to any devout worshiper of Iomedae for free doesn't really break anything. Consider it a bonus for doing a good job at serving their deity :)

Excellent idea, and just happens to fit in very well with my campaign. Thanks for the input KK (and for the website).

Dark Archive

This might be a good use of a Trait, instead of a Feat, so that it still has a (small) cost associated to it, and doesn't encourage every longsword-using non-Fighter to claim Iomedae as his patron so that he can qualify for Weapon Specialization.

Sovereign Court

You get weapon specialisation in return for only ever using a longsword, that is crippling enough without a feat or trait cost.

I believe I read it was originally envisioned more as a class option than a feat- I'd require a Paladin to go through a formal ceremony to take the oath etc. but I wouldn't treat it as a feat.

I would add that, as a DM, I would allow attack with fist or shield bash with this... hum... "free feat", having to stick to only one weapon is creepling enough for just the benefit of weapon spec. ;)
