Which AP would be the best for an Evil campaign?

Pathfinder Adventure Path General Discussion

Planning on starting an evil campaign and was wondering which AP would accomadate the idea?

From what I have seen so far, kingmaker allows alot of flexibility in terms of motives for getting involved in the adventure. A lot of paizo AP's appear to require some desire to stop evil or do good, I havent seen that yet in kingmaker, seems you can be very self motivated and get through the campaign.

King Maker would be good. There is no reason why you can't be evil dictator in that game. Some of the minor encounters will definitely go differently though but will function just fine.

The Serpents Skull could work. You don't need to be a good guy to go after ancient ruins.

Council of Thieves, evil characters are not good in this one. An evil party might just join up with the bad guys.

Voska, in Council of Theives, one of the recommended iconic characters is a Lawful Evil follower of Asmodeus. As long as your PC is opposed to rocking the Cheliax boat, the AP works.

I'm currently running Kingmaker and can attest to this. The motivations for the PC's are largely going to be political/military in nature for a large portion of the AP. Good/Evil will really only play into it to flavor the PC's motivations, though certain NPC's may need rewrites, I think that would be true of any published adventure.

I am also currently a player in a Serpent Skull game, as well, and one of our fellow adventurers (my characters sister, actually) is evil. It hasn't really made a huge difference, thus far, but at the moment, we're really just trying to survive. From what I have heard elsewhere, though, the rest of Serpent Skull lends itself well to evil pc's.

From best to worst:

+++ Kingmaker
--> almost no work needed as this is as "amoral" as an AP could get. You want to found your kingdom and almost all you do (including rescuing the little one) can be either motivated by greed/politics or is entirely optional to begin with.

++ Council of Thieves
--> only very few encounters require you to act a bit altruistic.

+ Curse of the Crimson Throne
+ Serpents Skull
+ Rise of the Runelords
--> can work with some adjusts as there are a few key scenes that require the PC to protect innocents or the like for the sake of it.

- Legacy of Fire
- Second Darkness
--> require quite some work as there are many situations in which evil PCs would probably bail out of the intended story line.

Shadow Lodge

I'm playing a Lawful Evil Hellknight in Council of Thieves who wants to bring down the Cheliax government for these reasons:

1. Bribery despite being legal in Cheliax is an unlawful act. Justice is not for sale.

2. Imprisoning people for thier beliefs is not a lawful act.

3. Working towards a Utopia requires me to ruthlessly crush people who oppose the perfect society I wish to create.

It comes down to the fact that I have a strict code of laws and ethics I follow not the laws of Cheliax. Where they clash mine are what I follow, because Cheliax is a corrupt society.

It comes down to the damned if you do and damned if you don't where the Paladin is in a city where its perfectly legal to sacrifice babies to the gods. To the Paladin its an evil act that he must prevent, but its also perfectly lawful and to act would violate his alignment how ever not acting and preventing the sacrifice would also violate his alignment.

Any of the Adventure Paths so far can be played by evil characters. They don't really require tweaking, but they do require investment of the characters in the story.

I won't get into the individual adventure paths, but there are ways without tweaking in which evil characters will be properly motivated to protect people without it being for good. To put it in simple terms stopping someone else's evil scheme to take over the world does not make you good it merely means you can't take over the world if someone else beats you to it.

Golarian already has an excellent example of Evil fighting Evil then the winning side tormenting the losing side with the key to its prison.

I would go with Serpent's Skull.

Spoiler:
In fact sheer greed is a perfectly valid motivation for the middle part of the adventure.

In fact two of the competing factions - the Mantis and the Aspis Consortium are actively evil.

And as long as none of the PC "Anti-Heroes" actively worship Ydersius, they should be motivated to complete the final adventure.

If you can get your hands on them, the Savage Tide AP in the old Dungeon magazines is an excellent AP for a lawful evil character.

I played a LE Favored Soul of Kaine (sort of home brew, based on Warhammer books i read). Needed some fluff backstory to get into the group at low level, but end game motivation was Kaine's opposition to the forces of chaos (demons). Provided a lot of great RP past about lvl 7 as well. Overall one of my favorite characters and APs.

Thanks
