I want to put a piece of treasure in my game that the sorcerer can use.
This game will probably end around level 6.
My idea is that it is a tomb of knowledge, in the general sense, that when studied for a level lets the sorcerer learn a new spell on top of whatever they would learn anyway.
I'm having a hard time deciding how to price it, because its value goes up with level.
A wand with a first level spell in it, cast by a first level guy, costs 750 GP. The sorcerer is casting the spell herself, so it never runs out like a wand, but it depletes her daily castings, which isn't as good - so for now I'm saying that evens out.
When she is 6th level, the "wand" would be worth 4500. The problem is that she can't sell the spell back and get a new item relevant to her current level. I don't want a full quarter of her wealth to be taken up with this book.
Also, it is kind of a double prize because after the party gets the book and she finishes with it, the bard can read it, and then they can sell it.
I'm thinking of making the market price for the book about 2500. This would technically put the bard and the sorcerer pretty high up on the wealth by level when they hit second and get their spell, and then they can sell it and equip one or two other people.
I don't know, what do you all think?

Well back in 3.5 there were "know" stones. They costed 1k*(spell level)^2 and you could cast the one spell stored in it as long as you had it on your person. It didn't take up a slot. Kinda like the wizard's pearl of power.

Reading it I am unclear on what exactly doe the book do...
After studying it for a level(? what exactly does it mean for the level...) a spontaneous arcane spell caster( as you include bards now) gains a additional spell known equal in level to the highest level they can cast. Correct?
How many times can it be used by any single character? If it is useable why would they sell it at 2 nd level?
Personaly...I don't know how you were planning on introducing it...I would have the use of the book be a reward for whatever adventure they are on...they you really don't have to worry about cost as much.
But if it is only useable once per character...and it takes a long time(It would be better if you defined the time it requires like a month...a year...a week..) Than I could see the price you listed of 2,500 gp.

Sure, I could say they have to study it for a month to get the spell out.
I was thinking of calling it, "The Revelations of Hirbod Amjad (Most Excellent Protector of the Fire Temple)." - The game takes place in a persia like nation.
The book can only be used once per character, and only grants a first level spell. Even if they were 18th level, it would only teach one additional spell.

At 18th level will it grant a 1st level or 9th level?

So a first level one would be worth only 1000 gold.
I was thinking of making this book a central part of the story, sense it can be used by multiple people. It isn't a magic item really, though the knowledge in it is super valuable.

I'd price it at 2k. 1k for it being a slotless first level spell, double it because it can't be taken away due to getting captured and what not. However the long time delay may or may not matter in your campaign. If it matters then you could probably bring it down to 1.5k
So a first level one would be worth only 1000 gold.
Yes, although they do have a different feel to them since they must be on your person to work, whereas you can just toss the book once you've finished reading it.

First, 3.5 MIC had items called runestaves. Try using the rules for those, as that should tend to work for you.
Second, why do you need to be able to price it?

Normally I'm pretty loose on magic item rules, but I thought I would try to keep things fair for once.
