Night Hag supernatural shape change ability

Rules Questions

Hi everyone!

What is the ruling concerning the ability to change one's self via a supernatural ability and detect magic. If the Hag changes into a dwarf (why? Why not! humor me...)will a detect magic reveal this?

Grand Lodge

Detecting supernatural abilities with detect magic would raise a whole series of awkward questions. Does it make any sense for detect magic to sense a dragon's breath weapon? If so, what is its caster level or spell level? Is the level of a hatchling's breath weapon different from a great wyrm's breath weapon?

It's simpler if we don't add new and undefined abilities to a 0-level spell: The detect magic table doesn't state any strength of aura for a supernatural ability, therefore it detects no magical aura.

Also, supernatural is not the same as spell like.

Supernatural has a broader definition.

Well, that was my gut feeling so I ruled it as such. Didn't want that ruling to haunt me. thank you both for the input.

Yes, as Su is ongoing magic in the area.

Now, you won't be able to spell craft to identify the spell. But you will at least see it.

You can't Detect Magic an inactive ability on a Monster (like detect the Dragon's Breath Weapon when he isn't breathing.)
