Hobgoblin bard

Advice

Playing on a fast exp board with different mini adventures to choose from session to session. Lethality is high and you can get in over your head by taking the wrong adventure. 28 point buy ended up with a Hobgoblin bard like this

Str 16
Dex 15 (+2 racial)
Con 16 (+2 racial)
Wis 10
Int 10
Char 16

First feat arcane strike, And took magical knack as my trait. Going into DD prolly copper or bronze.

Was thinking of going bastard sword and buckler route, so I can 2 hand when I don't need the armor.

Suggestions would great. Books allowed are Core, and APG

Thank You,

Read this guide:
Treantmonk's Guide to Bards

especially look at the section on the "Brute Bard"

I've read that guide enjoyed it, I'm more curious on other peoples bards and what worked for them. :)

arcane strike is a real dog of a feat, competes with your actions. if you are going to take a combat feat, don't pick one that will eat actions in combat as a bard, as it is their most important schtick in combat. My RotRL bard was regularly using a standard, a swift, a move, and an immediate in the first round of combat and then a standard and a move the second round.

Quack!

Uhm ... are we talking a Pathfinder Standard Hobbie here or are we talking a Homebrew? If Homebrew, cool, but if Pathfinder, remember that Hobgoblins hate arcane magic, which they view as 'Elven Trickery'. Most Hobgoblins turn to magic only rarely, and almost always Divine Magic, and as such members are often forced to live on the outskirts of a society, where they are equally feared and respected.

That said a Hobgoblin Warchanter could be an interesting concept, and would fit well with a Hobgoblin society(army?) as a powerful motivating force for the society's warriors to rally around in combat.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hobgoblin bard "Onward to battle! fight for the glory of the homeland!"

Hobgoblin mook 1 "Hey.. are you giving us a moral bonus? Oh my god.. you're using magic! CHIEF! CHIEF! Johnson is using magic!

Chief: "What's all the fuss about? Mook 1, what did Johnson do?

Hobgoblin "Well.. he was just talking...

Chief "and he was speaking plain, understandable hobgoblin, not going ickity ackity ook or whatever it is wizards do"

Hobgoblin 1 "Yes sir. He said "Onward to battle", but i recognize the effects...

Hobgoblin bard " And if he recognized such a mundane and subtle statement as magic, then it must be because he STUIDIED magic... HE"S the witch! Burn him! Off with his head!

*one bluff check later*

Hobgoblin bard: Alas poor Hobgoblin mook, i knew him horatio...

That made me laugh BigNorseWolf, playing in a friends homebrew. Pretty dang lethal but fun. I'm currently on my 1 month hiatus as GM so I can recharge. Since my friends don't read these forums I don't mind posting. Also we are using a d20 on a random chart someone wrote up for races... Wanna talk about interesting our first party was A goblin Barbarian, Goblin Rogue, Goblin Witch, Hobgoblin Oracle. The witch and oracle bit the dust in a botched robbery so that is why I made a Bard. Don't know what my friend is gonna bring to the table next. But its fun. And just looking for some idea's I havn't tried before. Never done a combat bard, I did end up taking the Skald archtype. I know a falchion is an awesome weapon. But kinda set on the bastard sword for fluff reasons.

if you are using 3.5 there is always The Divine Bard

Are you using Advanced Player's Guide? If so, you could take the Arcane Duelist Theme and get Arcane Strike as a bonus feat at first level. I like the feat, it scales up in damage as you go up in level, and works for any weapon you pick up.
