The Sound and Fury of Hypnotism

Rules Questions

First, a few elements of the spell description of Hypnotism:

The rules wrote:
  • Components V, S
  • Your gestures and droning incantation fascinate nearby creatures
  • Only creatures that can see or hear you are affected

And now my question: can this spell be cast stilled or silenced? Or both?

I would rule yes, but if you silence it, it only works on the ones that can see you, and if you still it it only works on the ones that can hear you. Use both though and i would say it becomes useless.

Like many magics this one is odd.

It does not state that they have to be able to see/hear your casting, only you.

So, a silent, still casting of hypnotism would just compel them to stand or sit quietly and stare at you.

Now, if you where invisible or have 100% cover while casting this silent and stilled, then it would fail (since they cannot see you). But invisible + ventriloquism + hypnotism would be fun!

Any time the bard ability distraction or using silent spell metamagic on sound and sight based spells comes up, I always imagine the caster doing the monkey.

"Hey! That guy's doing the monkey!" sits and watches patiently

So, just know that in my game your silent hypnotism would be your uptight and regal magus doing the monkey in his archmage robes and wizard hat.

Which would cause me to stop and stare too! With a total look of O.o?

It'll be awkward afterwards though.

"Hey, why was that guy doing the monkey?"

"Huh? What guy? I don't remember nothing about no monkey."

"You don't remember? A bearded freak in a dress walks up and starts doing the monkey... and you don't remember?"

"...Maybe I need to give up gnomish ale."

I would just blame Cognitive dissonance.

I would allow it to be silenced and/or stilled in any combination and still work. Why? Because it's magic! The spell doesn't work because you're waving your arms around and droning, it's magic that has a hand waving and droning component. Using more powerful magic (much more powerful magic in the case of a 3rd level spell) it is completely reasonable that you would no longer need the hand-wavy bits to make the magic work.

Distraction versus horrific appearance:

"His visage! It's so terrible!"
"THOSE EYES! OH BY THE DAWNFLOWER, THOSE EYES!"
"PROTECT US, O GODS, AND DELIVER U-- oh, hey! Benny's doing the monkey!"

"Oook ook! Hee hee!"

"Oh, wow. He's doing the monkey all right."
"Dang! He is. How cute."
