OK,I read through the Ultimate Combat Playtest, and I found myself a bit confused about the Samurai weapon proficiencys (proficiencies?? how do you write it?? Not native english speaker here, el castellano me sale mejor)

Anyway, it says that samurai are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, plus Katana, Wakizashi, Naginata and Yumi/Daikyu longbow.

The issue comes with the katana, does that proficiency mean they get it as a martial proficiency (i.e. they use a two handed katana) or an exotic proficiency (i.e. they can use it one handed if they want to)???.

Thanks beforehand for clarification.

If the samurai is proficient with an exotic weapon, he can use all its exotic weapon properties, in this case, wielding it as a one-handed weapon. He could use it as a martial weapon anyway because he's proficient with martial weapons.

I see, thanks, I suspected it was the case, but it never hurts to be sure

I don't understand why this comes up as a question, if the rogue says it has proficiency with a hand crossbow, it is proficient, they don't call out specifically that it is an exotic proficiency.

You are either proficient nor not proficient with a weapon.

Bastard sword is an exotic weapon, it only has ONE proficiency.

A Class that has the "all martial weapons" feature may use a bastard sword in two hands, if it does not have the bastard sword proficiency. This is the exception to the rule, not a rule it's self.

Since the Samurai is a class that already has "all martial weapons" they can already use the bastard sword/katana with two hands through that. But they get the full proficiency as out lined in the class.
So does the ninja, who does NOT have "all martial weapons" but they use the katana just the same because they have the katana weapon proficiency.
there are no 'half proficiencies'.
If it says you are proficient, you are proficient.
