Alchemist Questions

Rules Questions

i am currently playing an alchemist and a few questions have arisen in rules on formule and crafting.

1. does the alchemist get one and only one formule per level or is it one per formule level (ex. a 7th lv alchemist would get 3 formule one 1st one 2nd and one 3rd)

2.more specific rules on crafting, perhaps an hourly formula, for making alchemical items. if i have 8 hrh of free time durring a stay at am inn (with a portable lab of course) could i make a couple of doses of something or does it still come down to the per week formula broken down into an hourly format (which by the way in order to make ONE flask of acid in eight hours youd need a check of 140 minimum!)

3. this is more of a ruling question. if i use stone fist + draconic resivior + a bomb in my hand and i punch a dude in the face. we assume both parties take full damage minus my draconic resivior of course. the question is would both parties take full damage or would it fall under the splash damage rule

i really like the alchemist class but the only thing ive found lacking is the acquisition of spells upon leveling. i have been scrounging spells from all over the campain word due to the insanely small list that you acrue only on leveling. at least wizards get 2 spells per level. some input would be awesome, thanks.

Just one... you have to invest a little to keep the formula flowing.

Crafting it pretty insanely slow until/ unless you get the Master Alchemist feat.

You can't really use bombs in melee this way. You would throw the bomb at him, and take an Attack of Opportunity then resolve it normally. What you do beyond that is all between you and your GM.

Well keep in mind you can copy formula from scrolls or spellbooks and that will be your primary source of extracts.

_Only one formula every character level, for free. An alchemist can scribe additional spells into his formula book the same way a wizard can (but he doesn't have to decipher the magical writings first)

2.more specific rules on crafting, perhaps an hourly formula, for making alchemical items. if i have 8 hrh of free time durring a stay at am inn (with a portable lab of course)

-tsk. Get the full lab and a bag of holding.

could i make a couple of doses of something or does it still come down to the per week formula broken down into an hourly format (which by the way in order to make ONE flask of acid in eight hours youd need a check of 140 minimum!)

-Look around for the Excel ALchemy generator. It has a bunch of neat items and a time calculator for how long it should take to make.

RAW you cannot "punch" with a bomb. Stone fist and draconic reservoir should stack though.

1) Buy scrolls. They don't disintigrate when you fail to copy them

2) Try to buy a wholesale wizard book.
3) You have to have killed an evil wizard at this point. Pry the book from his cold dead hands and crib his notes.

As the others have said, sadly only one spell for free each time you level.

You might want to check your math you'd only need a check of 47 to craft a flask of acid in 8 hours (47/7*15=100.714) You'd divide your check by the number of days in the week for a daily result, which is 8 hours of work. As for the spreadsheet that was mentioned, you can find it HERE. For the 7th lvl alchemist you mentioned in your previous example, assuming he had an 18 Int and didn't take the Master Alchemist feat, he'd be making Acid in 3 1/2 hours. With the MA feat, 20 minutes. :)

After hearing about a PrC ruling, I'm happy to get 1 per level. Casters with spellbooks who take a PrC don't get any spells per level, all must be bought/stolen/copied. So comparing an Alchemist to a Wizard/Loremaster the Alchemist is better off IMO.

On the last one, i'd allow the fist bomb but it would do full dmg to you and standard splash around.

The Exchange

Technically creating and throwing a bomb is a standard action, not creating and doing anything else with it. The bomb also only remains viable for the round. So I guess you could take a standard action to create and not throw a bomb (creating it is an action which provokes anyway, so you're likely soaking an AoO right there if you're in melee), then hope that your melee enemy provokes an AoO before your bomb dries out... and then smash it in his face with a melee attack (which I'd guess does full damage to both you and him)... but it doesn't seem like a terribly effective tactic.

Using a delayed bomb might work... it goes off if any creature other than the creating alchemist touches or moves it, and the alchemist can reset the timer if he's holding it... but doesn't have to, so that may solve the issue... if you're hellbent on detonating bombs in your own hand that is... (Visions of bonfire night public service adverts are popping into my head right now... ;) ).
