Shock and Awe!

Gunslinger Discussion: Round 1

Grand Lodge

I played with a 'Slinger at my Society table last night.
There was an occasion when he discharged his pistol inside a grit den (Funny coincidence?!) and it got me thinking...
Firing a black powder weapon creates an overwhelming sound and shock wave (This effect is amplified indoors).
Combined with the huge acrid smoke cloud and fire belching from the barrel. Intimidating? Yeah.

The fluff text indicates that the designer is on the same frequency, but fails to back it up with any crunch.

Why not create an intimidation class skill that explores this aspect of battlefield Shock n Awe?

I wholly agree. They should have Intimidate as a class skill (which they DO if you look closely), and quite possibly, a few extra class features as well. At the moment, they are way too narrow in their focus, even for a primary combatant fighter-type.

There should probably be some Intimidate-related deeds.

Agreed intimidation deeds would be cool

Shouldn't be a deed, but a class ability they get at 5th level or so that works like Dazzling Display but in a 100-foot radius instead of 30-foot AND activates as a swift action once per encounter after the first shot fired by the gunslinger IF this is the first shot fired in the encounter. (i.e. doesn't work if other guns have already been fired already...)

"Hey, is that Han Solo?"

"I dunno, he's gotta be 100ft away!"
"Oh, he just spun his gun. Yeah, that's Solo. We're screwed."

OK, this is a fantasy setting, but 100ft Intimidate is just insane.

That has more to do with noise really... not visuals!

Have you ever been surprised by a gunshot within a 100 feet? (i.e. 30 metres for the enlightened, which means roughly 30 steps away)

I have. One can piss their pants when a gun is discharged within 30 yards... especially when your head is down and you're texting. Heck, if you're in a bar, fully aware, your head is not down... I would bet *some* people would still piss their pants if a gun nut would step inside and start firing around...

I'll have to take your word for it. I live in a country where the vast majority of the population don't have guns. The closest I've come to hearing a gunshot is fireworks.

Well yeah, that's a given. But in our modern world, you can get off more than one shot every 6 seconds. As the rules stand at the moment, the order goes something like this:

BAM! *reload*
1: "What in the name of Palor was that?"
2: "Hey, it's a guy with a boom stick!" *bow out* THWIP
1: "Let's get him!" *sword out* SLICE
BAM! *reload*

Dot's why you have TWO guns or one muskete (okay, you should try a blunderbuss filled with cut lead to clear the bar) Aren't there feats to make Han-like showoff possible (Dazzling display)?
