Carbuncle vs. Imp

Advice

So as some of you know I am currently running a lvl 5 beguiler in an Eberon Pathfinder game.

At 6th I plan to take Mindbender (3.5) and then beguiler from then on.

The campaign is about 75% RP, an my character is focused in Enchantment.

Currently I have a raven familier named Trevor (Obtain familier at 3rd)

Anyway, at 7th I was planning to pick up Improved familier and nab an Imp.

Imps are great at.. well, everything. especially with my maxed out UMD.

A little background. my character is NE and really tends more to the N then the E. he is a gambler and really just floats from one thing to another, more then anything he likes Wine, women, and the finer things in life.

So I was looking through familier chouces and came across the Carbuncle. Found Here

It had me at the picture.

Now all I can picture is this little lizard sitting on my sholder and each time we pass a fruit stall in Sharn it despretly trying to use Suggestion... "You REALLY want to give the cute little lizard an apple...."

Then when someone gets wise to it I have what looks like a dead lizard sitting on me while he hides under a table. (Also the fact that they get Jump as a spell like is funny as hell.)

So really my question is this. What the hell could this thing actually be GOOD at? anything? just comic releif?

I'm all over RP, but really my raven seems almost better. is there any reason to blow my lvl 7 feat on this cute little guy?

Ever wonder if suggestion is the only reason you've considered the Carbuncle at all?

............ Damn he's good...

That is the ugliest thing I have seen that is still kinda cute. I'd go with the carbuncle.

Yeah, it's really like throwing away 2 feats for a joke. But damn it I think i'm going witht he fruit eating, ugly lizard.

My GM and I are still talking about it, but I'm 80% sure.

I once took Obtain Familiar for a bard so I could "Nevermore Quoth", a raven that did little more than sit on my shoulder looking cool.

Because of this thread I have suggested the Carbuncle in the "Unusual Familiar" thread.

Where is that thread?

Thank you.

I love the Carbuncle at 5th level - it offers some good role play opportunities, but also is excellent at moving you together around combat.

Dimension Door 30' 3/day is great to move you + any one else (wounded) in or out of combat. I like to move up use Color Spray or other short range spell then dimension door back 30'. Nice if you have a 20' move Gnome or really need to get away (double move + 30').

3/day—daze (DC 10)

Jump
Since the Carbunkle rides on your shoulder he can cat on you. If you need to get over that lava flow or up on a ledge, quite useful.

"Retrieve this or that"
Levitate (self only, up to 10 feet)

Languages empath 30 ft. - Can essentially speak with your entire party silently in a very limited way. "Danger Danger" - nice when you are invisible and don't want to give away position.

Poor DC but look at the range (within sight!!)
As a standard action three times per day, a carbuncle can concentrate intently on one creature within its line of sight and attempt to impose its will upon the target. A DC 11 Will save is enough to resist this compulsion. If the target fails to resist, roll 1d6. On a result of 1-2, the target gains a flash of insight and a +2 insight bonus to its Armor Class for 1 minute. On a result of 3-4, the victim is affected as if by suggestion for 1 minute, and must follow a single (usually embarrassing, always harmless) suggestion from the carbuncle. On a result of 5-6, the victim's thoughts are garbled with those of the carbuncle, imposing a -2 penalty to the victim's Will saving throws for 1 minute. This is a mind-affecting effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.
