A big thank you to everyone who posted in this thread. I just returned from his memorial and it was amazing to see the friends, family and co-workers from Auckland who turned out to say goodbye. I don't know his exact age, he was in his mid-30s. I had known him and played Pathfinder with since my wife and I relocated to New Zealand last January. I hadn't known him a long time, but I did know him to be a stoic, honest, welcoming guy, and it was incredibly cathartic to pass those feelings on to his family. His family have graciously offered our group part of his RPG collection as a memento, and I can't think of a better way to keep his memory alive for us than to roll some d20s with his books on the gaming table.
