I find a lot of stuff at deviant art, just search for generic phrases such as "fighter", "wizard", etc. There seems to be an overwhelming amount of WoW fan art, but you can find some good, usable fantasy stuff around it.

Just be careful what you use the pictures for if you don't have the artist's permission. They can't really stop you from passing a picture at the gaming table and saying "this is my character" but when you start getting into PbP games where you post it on a photbucket or another website there can be issues.
As someone who commissions artists to draw their characters, I've forced websites and such to take them down if they're ones I commissioned and have the rights to now. It angers people sometimes but I'm surprisingly ok with that.

Wizards has kept the PC portraits online archives online and free, which is still quite useful.
If you go to Tony DiTerlizzi's IMAGINOPOLIS, click Enter, and then click the d20 over on the right, you'll find a set of wonderful character sheets with Tony's signature art.
There's also a set of his smaller character portraits here.

Yeah, that's a pretty good suggestion, so long as you keep it just within your game table. Googling "fire mage" or "dwarf" or something also sometimes works.
