So, I'm old. I've been in the workforce in one capacity or another since 1980. I've seen the computer revolution, the internet revolution, the cloud revolution, and now I'm watching the AI revolution.
And never have I seen such a fundamental, concerted effort to force a technology down employees' throats. If it's a good tool, everyone uses it without being forced to. I love SnagIt for my screenshots. If I need any video editing done, I use Camtasia. But every day if I do anything, from creating a PowerPoint slide to updating a spreadsheet, I get asked, "Did you try to use AI to do this? Why not?"
And, "Because it would take longer to get the AI to do this correctly for this one-shot job," isn't an acceptable answer.
It's appalling. I'm very far in the "AI is a bubble" camp. It is the next generation of business process automation tool. We've had many generations of them; back in 2005 my company introduced the "next generation" of business process automation because rules could be written in "natural human language". Yes, AI is better at recognizing natural language. Yes, AI can make decisions without you needing to hard-code rules. It's a massive improvement. But it's still just a business process automation tool. And that won't change the world.
Unless, of course, AIs keep hacking into one another...
EDIT: When you're old, sometimes you forget your pants...

Speaking of business process automation, I'll admit that the dev team just showed some astonishing examples of what AI can do to help quickly test and demonstrate prototypes; I was honestly impressed.
But now we're on to our team and it's pretty much, "AI can help you manage your broken-a$$ business processes."
"I get over 120 emails a day. Can you help me prioritize them?"
"Um, how 'bout instead I ask a far more fundamental question: Why?"
(Apparently every incoming bug request is sent to the entire dev team. Maybe, just maybe, have an old school automated business process that only routes a few bugs to you a day? 4 years ago I wrote a training course on work queues and how to manage and monitor your agents' workloads without flooding their inboxes with every incoming request.)
"Here's our new tool to help you manage all your Slack messages!"
"Have you ever considered not being on so many channels?"
Honestly, I get less than 100 emails a month because only direct requests for me come to me. I've unsubscribed from Slack channels that generated too much noise. Important notifications go to email, which has a filter and puts them in a "Notifications" folder I don't look at 'til the end of every day.
People send too many frivolous messages to too wide an audience. It would be more efficient to change your business processes than to use an AI to help people cope with the bad processes.

i'm wondering if the email thing is a boilerplate sales pitch to corporate people. I think one of the heads of my company used a similar "I remembered AI first and asked about how to optimize my email and it suggested tools to help" story in 3 different meetings/presentations.

No; we got a live demo of both the Outlook AI and the Slack AI, so our company is using it. I just have no use for it.

Yeah its s#!%ty for those that have to deal with it. The bare minimum when late should be an apology for being late or a thank you for being patient with the tardiness.
I wasn't trying to address your specific situation. I was trying to explain why someone might be chronically late, even when they don't want to be, to NobodysHome.

There's an email here from support with a picture of a graph labelled "site connectivity health". It appears to cover about a 40 minute window, and while it is generally at 100%, it does make occasional dips to anywhere from about 85% all the way down to 0%. But my favorite thing is that the support person described the behavior as "flapping".
(There are 7 dips across the graph. 1 to 85%, 3 to around 75%, 2 to around 30%, and the one to 0%.)
Yep. That there is a technical term. No, seriously. It's called flapping. Effectively the port is going up and down, kind of like a kid playing with a light switch.
But here's the thing...while this is definitely an issue, if your internet is down...not intermittently up and down...just down...then it's not the flapping. Just like a light switch. It would be intermittently up and down. If the card processing is simply down and not working at all...then again...this port flapping isn't the culprit.
It's just another issue that also needs to be solved.

Could the card processing not working be the matter of not updated IP on the card processing provider to match the new IP?

If the public IP was changed, which I don't know that it was but I feel like it's a possibility based on what gran said earlier, yes.

I swear I have *no* idea what goes on in that pea brain.
It's been warm today, so Nefret was enjoying time in the studio with GothBard. 7:30 pm rolled around and Mephisto started getting really upset. He was storming around the house, yelling at everyone, and for whatever reason I simply knew that he was looking for Nefret. So I brought her in, and his tail went straight up, and he calmed right down.
So yes, somehow, "Grandma must be in the house at night," is new.
OK. Whatever.

Yeah, GothBard's getting all kinds of "interesting" messages from Startech. First she got, "This is back ordered." Then she got, "This has been shipped. Here's your tracking number." Then she checked the tracking number with the shipper and got, "This shipment has been canceled."
So given the stupid, definitely best to have a backup plan.

So, we have a gardener. As I mentioned, he comes by for 45 minutes once every 2 weeks. We worked with him and his wife to make sure the tools he was using were acceptably quiet. It's not great, but we put forth the effort to minimize the noise and pollution impact on the neighborhood. Given the other gardeners who come around, our efforts made a significant difference.
And now our back yard neighbor seems to have hired a man whose machismo is rooted in how loud his tools are. Impus Major and I were at our back door and we literally couldn't hear each other even when shouting. I've never heard a louder tool (given the plume in the neighbor's yard, pretty sure it was a leaf blower). Morrigan nearly scratched my arm to shreds trying to flee from the noise.
And I go back to the simple, "Don't ban garden tools; set a decibel limit on garden tools," that would solve so much of this. If your tool is cranking away at 90 decibels at 5 meters, you should really replace your tool...

A co-worker texted me a video showing me the spare part that we had on hand. So, he was driving while he was making the video. He was also holding the spare part in one hand. Which means he was holding his smartphone in the other hand. So, steering with his belly hands I guess. Anyway, not the right part. It’s on order, should be here Monday?

Yeah, but attempting to recommend behavior to someone else, no matter how it's put nor how helpful, pretty much always results in grar. From, "Aren't you worried about your ears?", to, "Wow! That's pretty loud! How do you deal with it?", historically it's just been a good way to get yourself yelled at.
It's even worse with kids. Parents plop them down right in front of the speaker stacks at concerts or the farmer's market, no ear protection, and I wince because the kids are going to have hearing damage before they're 10. And, "That music is pretty loud. Aren't you worried about your kids' hearing?" is always met with, "Mind your own business, a$$h**e!"
So people make their own choices, and through personal experience I've learned that I can't influence them, so it is what it is.

For as long as I can remember (at least since well before a 1998 mountain rescue), I've lived by and vociferously encouraged a simple mantra: "If you're not helping, you're in the way."
From lookie-loos on the highway blocking traffic so rescuers take longer to get there to people crowding around an injured person on the street to take pictures to non-firefighters blocking fire trails to film the fire to many, many more, it's a constant source of frustration with me that people will stand there, in the way, preventing help from arriving, so that they can gape stupidly at some spectacle or another.
Which brings us to dinner...
While it is not my choice, I cook dinner for the family 3-4 nights a week. As those of you who cook are well aware, as serving time approaches things get more and more hectic in the kitchen while you try to synchronize all the dishes to come out at the same time.
So of course the family members who know that dinner is nigh want to see when it's ready, so instead of standing in the dining room or hallway, they come in and stand in the middle of the kitchen to watch me finish up.
It is beyond aggravating. I need a shooing/beating stick.
EDIT: And yes, I just interrupted Impus Major mid-sentence to say, "If you're not helping, you're in the way," and he took the hint and moved to the dining room before continuing to talk to me.

Getting ready for work tonight, I kept feeling like I was forgetting something. I double, triple, Evan quadruple checked that I had my phone, wallet, keys, snacks. All good. So I moved on to laptop charger, mouse, usb drives. Yep, had all of them, but it felt like I was getting closer to the something that was missing. But I just couldn't figure it out. I had just about convinced myself that I was imagining it, when I saw it. What I had forgotten. My laptop. Yes, I made sure that I had my laptop accessories, but almost left without the laptop itself. I'm glad I figured it out, because I don't want to be stuck at work without it.

If I'm cooking and my Mom is around, she will constantly get in the way while trying to help. No matter how many times I tell her "Everything is under control, just sit down," she will constantly be trying to stir stuff, or check the oven, or getting things that she thinks I might need out of the cabinets or fridge, even if she doesn't know what, If anything, I do need. Like,I'll be chopping onions, and she'll get the flour out of the pantry and put it right next to me, even if I've never mentioned needing flour for the recipe at all. Or she'll hand me the milk because "You said you need milk for this," but I've already used it and put it away. She even watched me put it away, but something in her brain goes "Oh, he needs the milk" and rather than ask, she just gets it and hands it to me, insisting that I need it. You could say that's it's because she's getting older, but she's always been like this.

Update on the work computers, because I know you've all been on the edge of your seats waiting.
Nothing has really changed. Still supposed to be someone coming tomorrow to look at it. Manager still saying he's going to redo it all (which I truly hope means that he is going to have whoever is coming to diagnose/fix the issue do it). The only difference is that one of the network switches up at the desk is no longer powered on because the manager thinks that it is the problem, and turning it off didn't break anything worse than it already was. Maybe we'll get some answers tomorrow.

The galley lights flickered through empty space.
You called the crowd “infested.” Some crew members said that word sounded too harsh and wanted “infused” instead. But while you tried to finish the meal and keep every pan from burning, the idle watchers filling the narrow kitchen made “infested” the only word that fit.
No one had ever suggested a tip jar on the counter. You could point to it every few minutes while the infestation of curious faces hovered and watched you work, waiting for the food that might keep the ship going one more day.

So, all set to go to my "friendquaintance"'s funeral on Saturday, and of course it gets me thinking about death: Once you turn 50, you come to the realization that people you know are now going to start dying of age-related causes instead of all your previous friends (suicide, homicide, cancer, traffic collisions, boat accidents -- I did mention I've lost a lot of friends over the years).
The first was no surprise and the kind of story that makes you condemn U.S. healthcare forever, and a strong reason we're leaving rather than trusting the U.S. system in our senescence.
So he died at 53 because he never got strong enough to even go on the transplant list.
The second was this guy. As far as I know, he was younger than me by a couple of years. And he simply suddenly died. I'll probably learn more at his funeral, but once you're in your late fifties, "suddenly dying" is something you actually have to think about.
