I remember looking on the ro(b)bed and depending on spellcheck to mark it as incorrect... I didn't taken account that robed means something else. In my defense I had (and still have) a headache in the middle of the night when I wrote it.

Obviously, when I am not robed, clad, veiled, covered, I might as well be naked.

Personally, I think "get themselves killed" sounds better than "get oneself killed". Pretty sure either one is fine, but "oneself" just always sounded too fancy to me. Like it's how a King or Queen would refer to themselves in third-person.

Same. And I just got excited and pulled the trigger on the Langrisser I and II with all the artbooks and soundtracks and everything and the Soul Nomad/Phantom Brave with all the artbooks and soundtracks and everything.

Huh? Apparently there is free play period for Borderlands 3 on Steam... Ending in a day and a few hours...

I could give it a check how would it play on this computer.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Interestingly, I have supposedly 66 minutes of gameplay already counted... Though I am highly doubtful that I managed to stay in game for so long when I was giving it a try during free period a year ago on my laptop (which the laptop could not really handle in a satisfactory way).

Mission: Blow up 8 billboards with a tank and you get to keep the tank.

Sold!

6 deaths and one billboard destroyed later I figure out how to fire the main and secondary weapons, as opposed to switching from driving to mounted gun every time.

Another 6 deaths after that I realize the main road isn't for me, on account of my complete disregard for subtlety.

So I took the goat path to town, which is actually easier than I expected, on account of I'm driving a tank and I only ran over two or three goat herders.

Which led to a protracted rampage through town as I started firing at the first armed convoy I saw after getting through the mountains.

I still got 4 billboards before the amount of enemies reached ridiculous proportions and I accidentally got my tank boxed into a market and just said f+&@ it and quit.

Borderlands 3 plays mostly fine on this computer, with only a small freeze periods when loading new zones and some cut scenes.

Watching the whole, "Animals have a keener sense of the environment than humans," play out makes me disappointed that we've managed to move so far away from our basic animal roots. (One of the extremely rare occasions I feel that way.)

Both cats are creatures of habit: The Fluffernutter pops up at 5:30 am, finds me, yowls to get out, I put her into the studio until closer to sunrise, and then let her out on her lead. The Satanic Calico waits until 7:30 or 8:00 am to go out and check the weather.

For the last week, they've been vastly enjoying the Bay Area's typical October weather, with highs in the mid 70s and lows in the high 40s.

Today, we're supposed to get rain at around 6:00 pm. Not a lot (0.08" according to the forecast), but if you go outside you can feel the change.

The cats don't need to go outside. They haven't even bothered. "Nope. Something's off with the weather. Not going out today."

And they manage to do it without even leaving their respective bedrooms.

I am impress.

That is how I do every mission.

I basically follow the "put a blindfold on and start running around shooting a shotgun at everything" school of playing video games.

Which is hilarious because in real life I'm quite precise, quiet, and deliberate.

Borderlands 3 is the least game in the series in my opinion. The story overall is weaker. There are still some completely over the top moments in there and riciculous guns and boss fights. and in the end, isnt that all we ever want from borderlands?

So, in most fields as you get closer and closer to the time of an event, you can predict it with more accuracy.

Apparently not in Bay Area weather forecasting.

This morning there was an 88% chance of precipitation around 6 pm tonight.

As of 1:00 pm, the chance had dropped to 75%, still at 6 pm tonight

Now the chance is 41%. For 6 pm tonight.

So, our weather forecasters, with all their computer models, Doppler radar, and years of research can't tell whether or not it's going to rain in the next 2 hours with anything better than 60% accuracy. (There's now a 59% chance it won't rain at 6 pm, so gotta give them that.)

Am unimpress.

So... this is interesting.

Comparing Ghirardelli's chocolate chip cookie recipe to Nestle's, the entire differences are:
(1) Ghirardelli uses 2 teaspoons of vanilla, as opposed to 1 in Nestle
(2) Nestle uses a full teaspoon of salt, as opposed to 1/2 in Ghirardelli.

In particular, both recipes call for baking soda, not baking powder.

I'm going to have to assume that my baking soda (which I never use) is bad, since I know I've followed the Nestle recipe and gotten excellent results.

I'm trying it with baking powder now; will know soon enough whether that works.

EDIT: I'm sure to no one's surprise, the baking powder ones came out picture-perfect; right out of a baking magazine.

I feel the Ghirardelli and Nestle recipes were close enough that the Ghirardelli recipe acted as a control; I doubt half a teaspoon of salt or a teaspoon of vanilla made a difference.

Money Talk:
I've never been one who obsesses about saving money; even in my grad school days when we were buying generic cereal because Cheerios were too expensive, there were things we wouldn't buy, even to save money. (Store brand butter, anyone?)

Once you take a step back and start getting pummeled by screaming marketers howling, "Buy this! You'll save money!!!!", you realize just how insidious the problem is. No matter what the product, service, or scam, the #1 selling point is, "You'll save money!"

It's really kind of terrifying.

And if you say, "No, thanks. I don't want to save money," you're insane.

This message brought to you by PG&E repeatedly harassing me to switch over to a "we charge you based on average usage instead of real usage" program. It stabilizes their revenue stream and boosts their stock prices. It does nothing for me. Yet their entire selling point is that "I'll save money!"

No thanks.

I'm not sure exactly where you live around my parts electricity bill spikes and valleys through the year are completely unavoidable due to usually having 30 or so days with sub 0 (f) temps, another two or three months below freezing on average, and then about 30 days with heat ranging from 90-110. We too are offered averaging price for electricity and due to the spikes hitting VERY hard in our area in 2017 we signed up for it. Now, we don't have a place with gas heating, it's entirely electric, and the same thing goes for all of our appliances, electric range and also water heater.

The net result for us has been for about four or five months of the year (mid-spring and mid-autumn) the bills are indeed about 30% higher than they would be with actual rate-billing, about 4 months where it is basically a wash, but during those coldest months and warmest of summer, it is a HUGE relief that I can just pay the $160ish on that as part of our (generally) unchanging budget instead of having to deal with a surprise $300-400 bill that, if not caught up after a month, would end up resulting in the loss of our lease entirely.

I'm also not sure if your utility does yearly reviews to measure if their estimation is accurate, but for our provider, if we end up overpaying some then that calculated overpayment is deducted from the next billing and decreases the plan cost, similarly though if you use more than the average after the review the cost does go up. We've only had the plan change twice, once in 2019 when the cost of the plan went down, and then near the beginning of this year, it went up since, well, we spent a LOT more time in the house in 2020 and consumed more energy.

So, all that to say, there are real benefits for folks with a tight budget who live in a real "4 seasons" (or more if you count construction, fake spring, and October pseudo winter) area where your usage will vary wildly throughout the year and primarily use electricity for heat and appliances. Somewhere else with far more consistent temperatures and weather though, it's probably not so valuable unless keeping your budget extremely consistent is a priority.

We figure out what the average is ourselves and just put that much in the bill account each month. That way when we overpay, WE pocket the difference and it’s there in the account during the hot months when the monthly amount is under the actual bill.

Themetricsystem wrote:

(Goes on to describe real places with real weather.)

This is a case where you're both right.

NH lives in a very specific weather anomaly in the Bay Area and has solar panels on top of it. He doesn't need AC when there's only about 1 week/yr that he'd actually need it. Same with the heat.

It's the places with wild weather swings and big temp extremes where having the consistency works out in your favor, if for no other reason than avoiding the surprise big bills from the AC being on for 3-4 straight months. And/or electric heat in the winter.

Makes sense for NH not to do it, makes just as much sense for others to do it.

Well, I need to double-check. My impression is that PG&E skims a bit off the top so that leveling costs more, but I should verify it. At the moment, consider it an unverified opinion. In other words, cow chip cookies.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

And yeah, my post got eaten (Thanks, Paizo!), but Vanykrye summed up most of it. Here's the rest:

(1) I live in an area where highs under 55°F or over 80°F are extremely rare, so my bill is pretty stable ($30-$180, with an occasional break into the $200 range because of a cold snap).

(2) PG&E got deregulated and has been pulling scummy shenanigans ever since, so I fundamentally don't trust them with the whole, "We'll average your bill and not charge you a dime extra! Honest!" approach.

(3) The main point was that PG&E's offer in no way, shape, or form saves me money. Even if they're spot-on honest about it, it's a net zero sum game for me. So selling it as a "money-saving plan" is a lie. And I was fundamentally decrying that we've reached a point where every offer from every individual, corporation, or scammer is, "You'll save money!"

Anyhoo, conference week so I've got a quick lunch break and then back to the talks.

Irony: In the morning, using a utility company's hardball push to get me to sign up to their leveled billing service as an example of, "You'll save money!" as the ultimate sales pitch...
...In the afternoon, attending an hourlong talk on low-income utility customers and how we're working to assist them. With leveled billing one of the major features for assisting people who are having trouble paying their bills.

----
As I (hopefully) clarified, I think leveled billing is a great idea... if the utility company isn't using it as an excuse to skim a bit off the top.
And it shouldn't be advertised as "saving me money".

Sigh.
The mini that WW got me from Eldritch Foundry finally arrived, and if you've ever considered a custom mini from either Eldritch or Hero Forge, all I can say is, I'm underwhelmed.
And this is product underwhelm on top of the customer service underwhelm I wrote about earlier.
The customization software on their website shows a light-toned figure, brightly "lit" so all the features show up clearly on the screen. The figure that arrived was a dark charcoal colored resin, matte toned, so all the time you spent on the detailed customization feels a bit pointless. Considering that painting isn't even an add-on option but something you have to do yourself if you have the skills (I don't), you might as well get a featureless old metal mini out of your box of randoms and describe it the way you imagine it, like the emperor's new clothes.
Even with a 20% off coupon, this still felt like a total ripoff. They put it in a fancy tin with a customized Eldritch Foundry d20 and a sticker, but all that does is highlight how featureless the mini is, because both the tin and the die are multi-colored and glossy.

Ouch.

Yeah, the reason I've never ordered a custom mini is almost exactly that: I could not paint a decent mini to save my life.

GothBard is an amazing mini painter, but she has to be seriously motivated to do so. So yeah, I could order myself a custom mini, and get GothBard to commit to painting it, but by the time it arrived and I got GothBard to paint it, the AP would already be over so there'd be little point.

Plus I've heard horror stories about Hero Forge's quality, so I was happy when you mentioned you'd gone with Eldritch Foundry. I'm disappointed that they seem no better.

EDIT: Oh, but just so's you know, Hi managed to "inherit" a 3D printer and he's desperately looking for things to print. If you can figure out how to get a 3D model file of a figure I'm sure Hi would print it and send it to you. I have no idea whatsoever whether it would be any better; I have yet to be in the same room with a 3D printer, much less see its output quality.
