I love peppermint, but I really dislike spearmint. No, it doesn't make sense to me either, but taste buds dislike what they dislike. Starlight mints made from spearmint are evil.

I like wintergreen/wintermint, but I can take it or leave it.

I love spearmint.

Which means I need to watch a new anime that I own from my Premium collection- the shows I watch annually to keep myself...well, myself.

Should it be Macross 7, Macross Frontier, or Genesis Climber Mospeada?

YOU get to decide!

Bubblegum Crisis.
Only in the summer is Bubblegum Crisis to be watched.
Vampire Hunter D.
That is a movie, I need to watch a series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion.

So, Impus Minor shattered our old scale, like you do (teenage boys), and I ordered a matching model because it was:
(a) Cheap,
(b) accurate.

And its three settings are kilograms, pounds, and stone.

Outside of British sporting events, who in the world uses stone any more?!?!?!

I was excited one year because the voice of Shinji was coming to Otakon then I learned it was the dubbed voice.

Hello, everyone.

Freehold, I vote for Macross Frontier. It's a good series with very good animation.

GLORIOUS

Well, Head Contractor texted and all signs point to him showing up after work today. Hoo, boy! What a list to discuss!

The list:

(1) The mirror embedded in the wall over the sink isn't centered
(2) The electrical box containing the light switches is sticking out from the wall by 1/8"
(3) There's a cracked tile hidden behind the toilet
(4) The grout job in one corner of the shower is embarrassingly bad
(5) Some of the white grout got stained by the dark grout because the guy violated the #1 rule of grout and did the white grout first
(6) We're pretty sure the grout never got sealed and isn't waterproof
(7) The bottom of the shower handle isn't caulked. In stucco this is normal. I'm not sure whether or not it's normal in a shower
(8) After a full replumb, we have pretty bad water hammer
(9) After a full replumb, the guy left a leak in our wall
(10) The "patch" in our kitchen floor is a screwed-in circle of plywood that's 1/4" below floor level
(11) The guy never worked more than 5.5 hours a day, 4 hours a week
(12) When I expressed concern about the final bill, he mentioned all the add-ons he'd done when they were almost all HIS suggestions and things he just seemed to be offering, with no mention of extra cost. "You know what would be cool? You should have a dimmer switch here instead of a regular switch!"
"Oh, you asked for that dimmer switch so you know that's going to be an add-on!"
(13) Nothing that went wrong was EVER HIS FAULT

Kind of appropriate to have a 13-item list for a black-tiled bathroom...

My eyes noting the number 13 out of the text of the final line made me think for a moment you will be comparing his behavior to 13-year old...

Because all those mistakes (except the mirror) didn't show up until 2 weeks before he was done, and contractors around here have a 3-4 month waiting period. So it was, "Let him finish," or, "Have no bathroom all summer."

And seriously, of the 13 issues listed, I learned of all except one in the last 6 days of his work. It was some major, "I'm done! Time to get out of here!" crappiness.

Because then the project would have been set back at least a year while he lines up a new contractor that is both competent and available.

The funny thing is, I have some other friends who live in the same town who are five weeks into their kitchen remodel and are over-the-moon happy with it.
And I don't assume they got a really good contractor; I am assuming they have no clue what's going to bite them in the hindquarters later.

Good contractors are busy. I don't know how many I've had to tell people that we were booking months in advance, so getting to their "little project" would not happen that weekend.

And almost every time, they were shocked. Occasionally, they get pissed: "But our daughter's wedding is in two weeks and we need the yard finished before then!"

3 people marked this as a favorite.

I believe we're booked through the year.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

Well, the whole reason I got Moron Boy was because our good, reliable contractor overbooked himself and thought Moron Boy would do a decent job. It's pretty bad when even your good contractor can't find a good contractor.

On the other hand, Talky made me feel better. Apparently his family in Houston is having exactly the same kind of nightmare I'm having: Either someone shows up and they're so bad they have to fire them, or the person never shows up, or the person only works half-days.

The thing that frustrates me is that Moron Boy proved that he can do good work; the tile on the floor is beautiful, and about 4/5 of the wall tile is great. The problem is, he got fed up with the project, threw the last few bits together like crap, and when he found out he'd messed up some of the old stuff (like the switch box) he didn't bother fixing it.

So it's even worse when the guy is capable of being competent but gives up trying.

If you ever need something done with your yard just pay for my ticket and I'll do it, and I bet it'll still be cheaper and higher quality than any local you could hire.

Which goes for anyone here.

The boss tells everyone we're the best in the state but I've been looking at other companies around the country and I haven't seen anything that's better.

Yeah. We've been *trying* to get someone to replace the windows on Miss Daisy's house. She has enough money for the project, but no one wants to do it. We've had contractors who didn't want to take on a "small" job try to fob it off on a subcontractor, only to have the subcontractor give us the runaround and then lie to the gc about the reason for bailing, or just ghost us completely after giving us an appointment time (three different guys). So frustrating.

About to go home. Good night, everyone.

Saw a guest come out of her room with a dog a little while ago while I was putting laundry away. Wouldn't have thought much about it, except for the way she sort of panicked and went back into her room when she saw me. So, I checked and no mention of a dog in that room, thus I charged her for it. If she had just kept calm, I wouldn't have bothered checking the log, and she wouldn't have gotten charged an extra $50 (plus tax).

I get to pick up new tools today, including a new compactor.

Hopefully it has a hook on it like the last one so it's easier to fish it out of a trench with a skid loader.

So, Head Contractor was a no-show, which is pretty typical for him, so a whole lot of stress for nothing, but at least now it's all out of the way and prepped. "Here's what I need to tell him. Here's what he needs to fix. Here's what I'm going to fix. Etc."

I think the saddest part is the number of things that I'm going to repair because I honestly feel I'll do a better job than General Contractor: From the water hammer to the mis-set electrical box to the hole in our closet wall, I just don't trust him any more: He decided he was "done" with our project, stopped doing even decent work, and the notion that pointing out his shortcomings is somehow going to make him do better is quite alien to me.

Either people take pride in their work and do a good job based on their nature (CY), or they don't and forcing them to "fix" their mistakes isn't going to end well (GC).

If I thought GC would honestly want to make amends I'd let him fix everything. But his whole attitude of, "Every mistake in this bathroom is someone else's fault," speaks volumes about the kind of fixes I'll get out of him.
