And in Yet Another Reason I Use an Accountant, I thought that this year I'd finally gotten everything 100% correct (my closest ever was all documentation except proof of Impus Minor's existence), but it turns out I'd forgotten to include all my business expenses from the rental property.
And as usual, that deduction practically pays for the accountant.

Consider it not using Disney+ guilt.
If I rated the streaming services on how I use them then they'd be.
1. Hulu
2. HBO Max
3. Netflix
4. Peacock
5. Youtube
6. Disney+

And if you ever want to feel like you're living forever, sit around waiting for:
(1) The end of a 354-day-and-counting lockdown
(2) The completion of a 10 week bathroom remodel
(3) Your tax returns to arrive from your accountant so you know how much you owe/are getting back
Time passes so slowly it might as well be stopped...

Is it just me, or do all of you know each other personally? Like, is it just through the boards or did you all grow up together, or did you all attend the same cons/games or something?
Good question. I've never met anyone, personally. But, if one spends enough time here, one gets to know what other posters are like.

Captain Yesterday hit some of the main points, but as far as I know:
- Freehold and Celestial Healer know each other personally- LisaMarlene and I know each other personally
- When we visited Europe, I met Woran and Lord Synos and hung out with them
- Captain Yesterday and Freehold both keep in text contact with many other FaWtLers, to the point that CY had planned to spend a week in the Bay Area sightseeing and meeting up with us before nonsense intervened
- One of my friends traveled to Singapore and got hiked half to death by Just a Mort
So it's more like, "Hey, I'm traveling to xxx! Does anyone on FaWtL live in that area?"
"I do!"
"Cool! Let's meet somewhere!"

From the way everyone welcomes John to work then bids him goodnight, I figured you all chilled together on weekends or something. Its probably the little brother syndrome in me rearing its ugly head yet again; constantly feeling like all the other posters on the boards are part of the cool older sibling club and I'm begging for an invite or something. Definitely a "me" problem.

Save up the $8000 or so it'd cost for a single weekend in the Bay Area and stop by! We'll buy you dinner! :-P
(And seriously. GothBard and I were looking at a single weekend in Napa and it was around $10k. Considering we can just drive there and do a spa day for under $500, that was a solid, "Nope!")

Good lord! I can get down to Stillwater in peak fall color season for a spa weekend for 1k and that'll include a spa, a B&B near the water and all the midwestern grub I can handle.
Wait... am I a total cheapskate?
If I bulldozed my house and put the 3750 sq. ft. lot on the market, I'd get at least $800,000 for it.
You're not a cheapskate. People in the Bay Area are morons.

Bored and not feeling motivated, so will dip in here to provide quick tax lesson.
The usual caveat about I am not YOUR attorney, this is not legal advice and what not applies.
But...
Section 61 of the federal tax code defines any money you make from any source as INCOME.
That is the starting point. Simple numbers included for simple.
So you made 50K from your employer. All of that is income.
Your employer took out 100/mo for health insurance? You still had 50K income.
Your employer took 100/mo for state taxes? You still had 50K income.
And so on.
Because of history and what could loosely be considered a sense of fairness - deductions are provided. They are also, as CS noted, used to promote certain types of economic behavior.
There are two types - above the line (which are good) and below the line (showing up on your A form, which are less good)
Above the line deductions actually decrease your official income from your gross income to your adjusted gross income (AGI).
Above the line deductions include contributions to your 401k, payments to employer sponsored health insurance plans, and a few others. Because they are powerful, there is a general belief in the need to keep the number of these relatively small.
Below the line deductions are applied after you find your AGI. You list them all on your schedule A, cross apply caps, phase outs, and what not. If you don't want to keep records, you are allowed to just take the standard deduction. But typically if you are paying a mortgage, your mortgage interest will make it worth while to itemize.
Itemized deductions are things that are considered 'kind of important' that the gov't wants to incentivize, but not really. Charitable contributions, owning a home and things that are included out of sense of fairness - state taxes, child care credits, student loan deductions health care expenses and so on.
From this you get taxable income, which is what the feds then tax.
That does not change that your INCOME is more than that. You made the money. They could tax it.
Interestingly, while yes Trump was definitely sending a big F U to CA and NY when he urged the passage of a cap on the combined mortgage interest/state taxes, the actual sentiment is, at the same time, actually a liberal agenda - namely taxation of the rich - it taxes the "rich" (or more accurately it taxes the high income folks (even if their net worth is low and thus they are not what "rich" really means. They are rich from a sound bite understanding)0. That is, if you are making enough money to be able to afford a big mortgage and/or have high state income taxes, you are rich and you should be taxed.
It hit the conservative base too. It does not take that large a mortgage, even at the low recent rates, to go past 10K of interest in the first few years.
But whatevs.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

** spoiler omitted **...
Interestingly, the mortgage interest didn't hit either Shiro or us, because we didn't take out one of those mega-loans. Reducing the biggest allowable mortgage from $1 million to $750,000 didn't hit us.
What killed us (and most Californians and New Yorkers) was capping combined property and state income tax at $10,000.
We paid under $500k for our house, but the property tax is still over $10,000. So ALL of our state income tax is now taxable at the federal level. And considering California also has one of the highest income tax rates in the country, that's a hefty chunk of change.
Basically, if you live in California and both work and own a home, you're hosed.

FAWTL old guards from previous iterations of the thread had meet each other during Paizocons, in the previous age when the cons were still around.
Of the new FAWTL, a few met each other in person. A few more would meet each other if NobodysHome with Shiro and family visited more of Europe instead of spending definitely too much time in UK...

Call me John Snow, 'cause I know nothing have met no one, in-person.
It's all just here on the forums!

Some of us have been frequenting the same boards here for more than a decade, I've known Nobodyshome, Amby, Freehold, Tacticslion, and Orthos (by the way, where the in the world is Orthos?!) Since we used to all hang out on the adventure path boards.
I see him doing stuff online in Discord on occasion. Mostly with updates that he's running something (usually Neverwinter Nights).
He seems to be super-busy these days?
But I don't know! I should ask.

OK. It's possible to be too paranoid.
In today's mail was a bank card for GothBard from <Major Bank>. Except... we don't do business with <Major Bank>. So I was about to call it in, when I realized that it was in her name, so she'd have to make the call.
I started IMing her that someone had used the credit info that got compromised last month to open a bank account in her name but the idiot thieves had forgotten to change the address when realization slowly dawned on me...
...inspired by hearing about my work on a "What to do if I die" doc for the kids, mother-in-law had made one of her own. And even more importantly, had taken GothBard to <Major Bank> last week to get her access to mother-in-law's accounts.
My IMs to GothBard were pretty fun.
"Oh, wait a minute! This is your MOTHER'S account!"
"Yes."
"So they sent you a card?"
"Yes."
"So now you can rob your mom!"
"Yes."

I've hung out with Cap and Freehold each a couple of times. Freehold was in Chicago for a con, so I drove in to meet up with him each time. My girlfriend at the time and I would meet up with Cap and family when we were going to be in the Madison area.
gran and I are only about an hour and 15 minute drive at my normal highway pace, but we haven't met to our knowledge and I don't think we have any shared friends/acquaintances. I have a couple friends in his area though.
I do have a plan for a 5500 mile Western road trip when things are back to a lesser strange. I was going to do it the summer/fall of 2019, but it just wasn't feasible at the time. The plan includes a mix of hotels, camping, and if others are willing, a couch or two along the way.
Also, next time I have to go to Florida for Aiymi's family I was going to see if anyone wanted to drop my body in a swamp have dinner or something.

At some point either this summer or whenever we plan on a trip to Illinois. We were going to go last year when Run The Jewels was going to be on tour in your area but that obviously never happened.

Only if there's a Portillo's nearby. After getting it back near me after a decade of being deprived, I'm firmly addicted again. Can't do it ALL the time, but a beef and cheddar (not the croissant,) with hot peppers, cheese fries and a large coke. That's my default!
