My date: "So what do you do for a living."
Me: "I race cars."
Date: "Do you win a lot?"
Me: "Never. Cars are really fast."

Sure, nekkid dating. Why not?

I vomited up my dinner tonight, so I am now in the ER to deal with my kidney stone. I was hoping it'd pass on its own, but my doctor was very specific about going to the ER if I started vomiting.

In better news, I got yet another interview!

Last night, my daughter saw a mouse in the kitchen and spent 4 hours cleaning until it was spotless. Tonight, I'm going to put the mouse in the bathroom, and tomorrow in her bedroom.

Y'all are way too picky about restaurants.

Or maybe I just love eating.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I can completely understand them not wanting to eat at certain restaurants, even if I disagree with the ones they will and won't eat at. For instance, I won't go to a Chinese restaurant, especially a buffet, because 1) I don't particularly care for Chinese food (beef and broccoli is pretty good, and some occasional General Tso's chicken is okay, but I just buy the frozen stuff at the store and make it at home), and 2) the smell makes me nauseous. Same with Indian. I've never tasted any Indian food, mainly because curry smells so disgusting to me.

Good luck with the stones. My Dad has been struggling with those for the last few years, and it is terrible.

Wow, I guess if entire categories of food made me nauseous I'd be pickier too. :p

Can we just talk about the fact that this is a literal Pathfinder adventure in music form?

like: the mythical artifact that is the goal of a quest; odd forces f nature functioning how (and when and where) they should not; the narrative NPC that requires <X> thing for the <MacGuffin>; and the fact that, ultimately, you can buy mythical magic items for cold, hard, cash

Or how frustrated I am that no one has done an instrumental version of it?

(Though this version - an edited form of this version - is pretty close[/url].)

Anyway, I'm loving it.

Speaking of, I'm sorry it's been, uh, aahhhhh... a month... and... four... days!

Love you guys! Hope you're all doing well!

I'm way too busy, and life is pretty cray-cray right now, but we're over-all doing not horribly. And, what's more, most everyone is doing great!

I had minor tooth surgery and have been having a jaw ache and/or headaches ever since, but they're faded enough so that it only hurts when I drink or eat anything cold (as opposed to anything cold or hot, or literally just anything, or just kind of... went anywhere at all, or just stood still, or just kind of was alive), so, you know, progress!

Denny's is admittedly low-middle tier at best for breakfast restaurants, in my experience. Generally semi-cheap and semi-quick, but not exceptional in any way - neither really good nor memorably bad - and not a good enough deal to bridge the gap between the actually good breakfast restaurants like Cracker Barrel and fast food.

I hate Cracker Barrel. I've never been impressed with their food - it's mediocre at best and not really worth the headache of cramming into the off-putting and claustrophobic Grandma's forgotten attic full of junk aesthetic it's got going on. I always feel like I've wasted my money and an hour of my life I'll never get back. If I want a middling generic quality brunch menu, I'll go to IHOP, where I can at least get something that's not slathered in shame gravy.

And to quote an old meme, people don't go to Denny's. They end up at Denny's. And not that one. The good one across town.

I like the hashbrown casserole, fish and chicken fried chicken from Cracker Barrel. Also frosted mugs with root beer :D

Denny's has pretty good skillets. I'm kind of an all-devouring hole so there are few places I really don't like.

Waffle House is the beeeest. I love being able to smell the food cooking as soon as I walk in.

Cracker Barrel is one of my all-time favorite restaurants.

Denny's is far less bad than most people give it credit for, though some of them can be.

IHOP is solidly decent (and often better than Denny's) and I have many, many good memories of it, but it's also never as compelling as I hope it will be. Same thing with Bob Evan's, though Bob Evan's tends to be of higher quality (and more expensive).

Waffle House is a straight up 50/50 chance of legitimate glory or dark terror (with a 50% chance - and yes, that makes sense, and no I don't actually mean 33-and-a-third-percent - that it's solidly middling).

As a general rule I like most Chinese food, myself.

I've not been to enough Indian restaurants to tell for sure.

That said. No shame if it makes you feel bad to eat there - I honestly, absolutely feel you. Alcohol absolutely does the same to me, too, and many people really don't get it.

Praying for you to feel better quickly, TS!

Also, I've been enjoying Blood of Zeus FAR more than I thought I would.

Not entirely certain how I feel about some of the ways in which,

a central part of the conflict:
Zeus is (more or less) the good guy and Hera is (more or less) the bad,

but that is extremely classic Greek myth.

Of course, the ending is a classic misinterpretation of Greek myth.
(Like a super-classic and kind of annoying misinterpretation.)

Not enough awesome women, and the few who are present don't get enough lines.

There are occasional random-seeming drops in animation quality (very consistent with the very-good-but-I'm-still-embarrassed-to-admit-that-I-watched-it Castlevania anime), and it can feel a tad rushed or... something, at times (again, much like Castlevania), and it has a needless excess of gore at times (you know what comparison I'm going to put here? I bet you do. It's My Little Pony no, of course not, it's Castlevania) but over-all, anyway, it's been pretty good.

It actually compares favorably in some respects to Castlevania - less, ah... gratuity - and a little less well than others (the characters are even more a little on-the-nose than that show).

The fact that it's only eight episodes long is actually in its favor as well - not because it needs to be short because bad (I kind of want it to be a couple or few more), but because it's approachable at that length.

Anyway, later!

I don't think I know anyone who doesn't just tune it out. You could argue that the subliminal advertising still works, but we also don't buy anything that's advertised.

Just seems like a great big, "Spending huge amounts of money to generate tons of noise to justify your own existence when you're no longer relevant."

Maybe that's why I'm not a marketer...

Zeta keeps knocking out power. Just a few seconds each time, but enough to keep resetting my VPN for work.

Vexing. And enough to make me toss in work pen for day.

I shall make chili and have a beer while doing so and maybe paint miniatures.

I put together a really in-depth worksheet for my econ kids about price indexes and inflation. They'll fill their own "market basket" to find the cost, compare the cost to a few other years, and compare minimum wages and purchasing power over the years.

This meant looking at the actual numbers, so I'm sad now.

I have a half an hour worth of work to do. Meanwhile, my girls are joining some friends to visit a roller garden. I don't know whether to be panicked b/c of the pandemic or relieved that they're getting out of the house and having some much-needed social time.

They are bringing masks. I know one of the girls they're meeting, and I'm confident that she's been safe from Covid. The car just pulled away and I'm kind of losing my mind a little.

Bottom line, I plan on spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner to try and calm down.

Crap. GoG sales...

What's worse, there are sales on games that I want...

Impus Major's in (kind of) the opposite boat: A girl who had a major crush on him a couple of years ago (which he did not reciprocate and finally had the heart to tell her so) asked him to a drive-in tonight. In spite of both her and GothBard testing negative for COVID-19, he just came up feeling a bit off with a temperature of 98.9°F.

With no allergies and a normal body temperature a couple of degrees lower than that, I recommended that he cancel rather than lock himself in a car with her for 3-4 hours. He agreed.

He's scary wise beyond his years.

Speaking of comfort food, it's kind of scary how parallel everyone's mind works as the weather rapidly cools. Last night was the first night in the 40s this season. I left everyone to scrounge for themselves, and Impus Minor asked, "Do we have any hot dogs?"
He was disappointed to find hot dogs, but no buns.

So I did a store run and got hot dog buns and ice cream (because why not?), then decided I'd do chili dogs for dinner tonight.

Gothbard, on seeing the hot dog buns: "It's getting cold! We should totally do chili dogs tonight!"

Impus Minor, on asking what's for dinner and finding out it was chili dogs: "Oh my god! Thank you, Dad!"

Impus Major, with his minor cold, as I told him that he should ask me for whatever food he craved and otherwise it was going to be chili dogs: "Oh, chili dogs sound great to me!

So, easy dinner for me to cook, happy family!

Cold weather makes cooking SO much easier!

Hot dogs? That's not a home food. And definitely not hearty enough for an autumn eating... Silly 'Muricans.

I haven't eaten a hot dog in over twenty years.

And here I normally confine questionable merchants to a credit card so that any possible fraud damage is contained. But this time it was the debit card, which means I have to wait for the new card and then contact every single subscription service I belong to and provide new payment info.

We're honestly up to a breach every 1-2 years, and the banks and credit card companies have gotten so good at dealing with it that it's barely an issue. I see a bad charge, I call it in, they replace my card, and they keep paying my subscriptions on the old number for 2-3 months until I figure it out.

Fraud's become so common that the response is relatively painless.

Though I'm still peeved at the last one. I called Chase and said, "This is a fraudulent charge! DO NOT let it go through!"

And they let it go through anyway. On the one hand, I didn't have to pay for it. On the other hand, they did. You hate seeing criminals getting paid when you warned the bank that the charge was fake before they paid it!

NobodysHome wrote:

If they don't pay it, it's not the criminals who are punished. It's the vendor who was scammed by the criminals that takes the hit.

Credit card companies probably lose less money in the long run by covering vendor losses than they would by being punitive towards their vendor customers. Individuals aren't the only customers of credit card companies.

And individual users are already paying additional fees to cover the credit card company losses. I've pretty much stopped using my credit cards at places that have separated out the surcharges for their use and let me pay less by using cash.

Last day for two of my staff was today.

I'm off tomorrow to watch the mandalorian.

I work Monday Thursday and Friday next week.

Not sure how things are going to go from there.

I need a nap.

And for it to be either warmer or cooler.

Enough of this autumnal chill rain.

I layed down 6,000 pounds of pavers today, only another 24,000 to go!

We had three sizes 2x2, 1x2, and 1x1.

The homeowners picked the most complex pattern, when the boss and co-worker saw the pattern their eyes got really big and they both told me I could an easier pattern, which of course, sounds like a challenge to me, so I went ahead with it. It turns out when you realize it's mostly just dicks and helmets it was pretty easy to figure out and I got a good twenty by twenty area filled out.

Yeah, went to get the hot dogs out of the freezer and Impus Major is sound asleep in his bed. I think he's coming down with whatever got the rest of us last week.

We've known this day was coming all year, but it's a little scary. He's been sending out resumes and applications like mad, though.
I've managed to squirrel a bit aside so we'll be okay for a little while, but he needs to get a new job soon.
Fingers crossed.

Does anybody remember conference calls? They were an amazing feat of technology that allowed a group of people to talk to one another easily. It’s such a shame we lost that technology when COVID hit, and now we are all seemingly forced to use zoom/teams/Skype/whatever instead, with our cameras off, and endless technical issues that ensue from VOIP systems.
