I learned that John’s uncle (who I just met) is an old school tabletop gamer. His collection of 1e books is impressive, including original hardcover printings of Deities & Demigods, Fiend Folio, and the Greyhawk setting. I like this guy.
Is that 1st Edition Deities and Demigods the one with the Cthulu Mythos section?

Happy new year chaps.
@Limey, did you see the Thames fireworks? Really nice, but also what a waste of money
I also wish Thiepval would stop setting fireworks off and scaring my dogs
Sorry, no - there are people setting off various things in the street, but that's all I've seen/heard, though they seem to have shut up now.
Hope your doggos are OK.

Beer is a popular ingredient in batters used to coat foods before frying. One reason is that a basic batter can be made from merely flour, beer, and some salt. The purpose of using beer is so the bubbles in the beer will add body and lightness to the batter. Depending on the type and quality of the beer, beer may also add colour or some flavour to the batter. The practice of beer battering is popular in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Britain, Ireland, Germany, Iceland and Russia. Some foods that are commonly beer battered and fried are fish, chips, and onion rings.
Yay for Wiki. I've always wondered how Japanese do their tempura that light. Probably not beer batter, but something else...

It is my understanding that tempura batter is usually made with "soft" flour, egg whites, and water (sometimes carbonated water).

Hope everyone had a good New Year's Eve. Mine wasn't.
If you are wondering, no, we didn't drive after the party, and yes, there was someone sober to watch the kids.

Hermione still had a fever when her new Rapunzel alarm clock went off at 6:15, but as of now, it has finally broken, and she's starving.
Aaaand now she wants to go to the second day of The Big Party after all so she can play with her friend, and I'm trying to explain about the 24-hour rule and how two of the people there have compromised immune systems, and she doesn't get it.

The Vagrant Erudite wrote:Given my age, many of the women I end up connecting with via online dating have kids, but none of them have wanted a substitute dad for their younguns - most have said straight out that that's what they don't want, as they're still in touch with the man in question and don't need anyone else taking over that role (Potential Lady Longears (Diamond Edition) has two children, and has said so in not so many words). I've never come across any gold-diggers/people wanting sugar daddies either, but no-one in their right mind will look at me and think 'YAY £££££ AND A LIFE OF GILDED LUXURY', so no surprises there......g#@#@&n there are a lot of single moms on the dating apps these days.
Don't get me wrong, I understand people with kids need love too, but I ain't looking to be anybody's substitute positive male role model.
The entirety seems to be:
A) No physical attraction whatsoever
B) They've got kids
C) Clearly cray-cray. You know it's gotta be REALLY crazy when you can tell just from reading.
D) Golddiggers. Obvious golddiggers. You KNOW they're a golddigger when they describe themselves as a princess, that they need to be spoiled, or that they want a daddy to take care of them. I mean, at least they're up front about it, but still...or, just because the world seems to be cruel
E) WAY out of my league too good to be true
oh yeah, or F) Like a four hour drive away. Seriously, I set my preferences to within like a county away, but I keep getting buzzed by chicks in Miami or somewhere else ridiculously far out there. This sucks because they're usually the incredibly hot ones that I actually have something in common with - but I've done long distance before and won't do it again. It's not a fun experience.
That's funny, when I was doing the online dating thing, being a role model never occurred to me one way or the other. (Not sure what that says about me.) Women with children were a turnoff for a different reason -- I would read "I have children, and they are MY WORLD" in virtually every mother's profile, and I'd think "There's no way I can compete with them for her time and energy, NEXT!" Yet here I am, recently married to a wife who gives me as much time and energy as I can handle, and playing a positive male role model to her two kids. Well, except for the occasional cuss that slips out.
Ah, the power of a woman sending that first message...

I honestly don't know how you people manage relationships with the extra headaches of sex and kids involved. I mean I know it gets done, the species is still here after all, but that doesn't mean I understand it.
Realizing a relationship and potential marriage did not require any of those things was a turning point in my life that absolutely obliterated an immense amount of personal stress.

I'll take your word for it. ;) As I have no interest, I have no way of confirming or denying that. I was more meaning the pre-emptive stress of trying to find a compatible partner and working around the expectations of a significant other who is interested in that sort of thing.
The only part of being single I find stressful is the financial part. Not having a friend, roommate, spouse, or other source of second income means everything you require to survive - food, rent, power, etc. - comes directly from your own income, and if something happens to you (illness, layoff/fired, company closes, etc.) then you are SOL for everything that requires money. Having a second source of income is something of a security net for that.
Honestly my GF and I's relationship is more akin to prospective roommates than prospective spouses, when you get down to it. We really only want to get married because we're friends who want to spend the rest of our lives as friends together, and because of the financial and personal benefits of having someone else nearby and of dealing with income, taxes, etc. as a married couple rather than two individuals.

Yeah - I saw a lot of 'my kiddies are my world' style messages too, but for me, not being the centre of the universe for the other half is ideal - takes a lot of the pressure off, and you know that you'll be able to maintain separate (if parallel?) lives and not have to be one and the same 24/7.
