If you are the praying kind, pleas keep my niece in prayer: she is in her surgery (expected and known; related to her sarcoma mentioned a while back) now. Thank you.

EDIT: Hhhhhhhhhhhh-huh. This took an unusually long time to post. Go figure.

Mostly "good" news (relatively speaking), so far: the surgery is finished and her blood clots have not moved (a good thing, because moved blood clots would be in danger of clogging her heart); she is not, yet, awake.

Please keep her in continued prayer, as you think to do so.

Will do.

Update: she eventually woke, but is resting and being tended by her awesome family. We will see about therapy and handling the blood clots in time. Thank you all.

So my kid sister not only has a fiance, but gainful employment, for the first time in over a year.
If my spousal unit actually achieves gainful employment as well, this will be a clear sign that the end times are upon us.

I saw a thing a few weeks ago, but don't remember where. It was entitled "How to Annoy a Millenial." I shall now paraphrase it here.

1. Call their phone. Not text, email, facebook, or whatever. Call them.
2. Leave a long, rambling, vague but somewhat important sounding message. Ask them to call you back ASAP.
3. Ignore all of their attempts to text, email, message, or whatever other form of communication until they actually call you back.
4. Tell them it wasn't that big a deal and you've already taken care of it.

I related this to two of my nieces last week. They said that if I tried that with them they would never speak to me again.

Hive mind thought request:

I have been with brinkster for about 16 years with them hosting my moribund website and family email accounts. They have been....less than awesome the last few months. Am considering a new email/web hosting service.

Thoughts? Recommendations? Reasons?

This is about 10 email accounts, primary email for some of them, secondary for others...but not high volume. At least one account is also used heavily for calendar purposes (think white collar professional with teenage triplets trying to keep track of everything sort of volume).

The website is lots of pictures, but extremely low volume traffic. Has not been updated in a few years, but I keep meaning to come back to it.

If you need other data about usage patterns on which to base recommendation, please let me know.

So, working for a game company has its advantages: NobodysWife's entire team was watching for Switch announcements, so when a shipment arrived at Best Buy yesterday, off to Pinole she skedaddled, coming home with her prize.

So we got it set up, and Impus Minor is ecstatic, but my whole take is, "Meh?"

To me, it's basically a 3DS with a bigger screen that can plug into your TV.

Color me unimpressed... at least so far.

EDIT: Just as I hit "Submit Post", the PS4 started its typical, "I am going suddenly, after not being played for 2-3 weeks, start randomly beeping for NO reason, and you cannot stop me from beeping short of unplugging me!"

The PS4: STILL the worst console I've ever owned. Gotta go unplug the d**ned thing. Again.

How long does the battery last.

Please tell me she had to face claw some rich douche bag to get it.

Is it hard on the back (or eyes) trying to multi player in it's portable configuration.

How do the graphics stack up against other systems.

I don't plan on getting one, these are all questions I've had since they required us to watch the propaganda video at work. :-)

<snip>

Not an owner, but from what I've seen, the graphics are lower resolution than many comparable systems and... that's pretty much the end of the problems.

As a mild quasi-rebuttal to your comparison to the 3DS: it has motion controls (Wii), which are able to be modified for various games (so... better than Wii), and motion-control feedback that has consistently confused people with how well it can "fool" their hands - which is a really mind-blowing and unusual development in technology - as well as the ability to connect directly to your television and convert not only the way you play the game, but the style of interaction with it... all of which is a bigger deal (if successful; that's a big if, though) than you seem to suggest... though I'm certainly uncertain if such advantages are worth the price of admission.

As a portable, though, yeah, from what I can tell, it's basically just a bigger 3DS with a bit more power.

That said, Snipperclips and Breath of the Wild. I'd be sold on just those two games alone. Alas, I have no money. I only have to wait seven-ten years/one-two system generations, though! The price will be down by that point! :D

EDIT: My point wasn't, "You're wrong and should feel wrong." but rather, "The very topical elements that seem mild, may well be much more valuable than they first appear." - in other words, I'm encouraging you that it might be cool anyway. But, as a non-owner, I can't say, so take everything above with a grain of salt. Or twelve.

I don't plan on getting one, these are all questions I've had since they required us to watch the propaganda video at work. :-)

(1) No clawing of eyeballs was required; it was Pinole, after all, so they had "more than 10 of them" just lying around. And keep in mind that I just might *be* that "rich douche bag"!

(2) No multiplayer has been attempted as of yet. After all, we just got it set up after work yesterday afternoon, and then NobodysWife was off to her WotR game and I was off to Impus Major's Spring Concert, so Impus Minor was alone in the house with it for 4-5 hours. We got home and were sorely concerned he had not moved.

(3) The graphics are, in my opinion, appalling. And I am a HUGE fan of "gameplay over graphics". We STILL break out the Playstation 2 or Sega Genesis because they remain the platforms that had the best games (for us). But when you're looking at your son playing Breath of the Wild on a 75" screen and longing for the upgrade to 16-bit Super NES graphics, it means they went for such a retro look that it's kind of painful. I don't mind low-res graphics, but Breath of the Wild really seems like they went for, "Meh, just make the background green. They'll know it's grass." So far, the Switch harkens back to the days of 8-bit graphics. I suspect it was an intentional design decision by the gamemakers, but when your son is trying to play and keeps saying, "Wow! A brown blob! I'm going to go see what that is!", they may have gone a wee bit overboard.

So far, I'm still unimpressed. Time will tell.

EDIT: On the other hand, Nintendo continues to make the best in-house games of any company ever. If it weren't for Super Smash Brothers and Super Mario Kart. the Wii would have been an absolute waste of money. As it was, those two games alone entertained the kids for hundreds of hours, so "worth it"! Similarly, no matter my complaints about how underwhelming Nintendo's latest system is, Breath of the Wild has nothing but rave reviews, and Impus Minor is enraptured by it. So I suspect the system will still be "worth it", though I will never likely use it...

Well, every year I check my total net worth, just 'cause I want to finally post on Grand Magus' "Why aren't you a millionaire" thread (and someone beat me to the punch, curse it!), and even counting two Bay Area houses (which are stupid expensive) I'm always a few hundred thousand short.

So "well off" for sure. "Rich" I would have to say, "No," 'cause I can't afford things I really kind of need (like a new roof and foundation for the house).

Ah, Spring! That time your weekends get ridiculously overbooked, and it's all entirely your own fault!

  • April 15-16: Running Crimson Throne for lisamarlene. Woo hoo! And Whingy Wizard. Woo hoo?

  • April 29-30: Chaperoning the middle school to Great America. Woo hoo!
  • May 6-7: Bats in the Sun at Disneyland, where my brother and I wear khakis and Hawaiian shirts and hang out with Goths, who shun us most prodigiously. All kinds of fun. Woo hoo!
  • So somehow I think work on the garage has stalled for a couple of months. (Speaking of something I'd rather pay someone else to do but can't afford...)

Just wait 'til you suffer through Uncle Wiggly. It's another of those, "You must get an exact roll to win" games, but the exact rolls are utterly missing. My kids and I would play for 15 minutes, all get to the end, and then spend the next 45 minutes all banging on Dr. Possum's door, wondering where that lazy so-and-so had gotten off to.

The kids found it hilarious as I got more and more exasperated with Dr. Possum's lack of a work ethic.

I am glad to see the game destined for the waste bin.
