Actually, it is worse than that. Arachne was a humble woman and a master weaver. She was actually good enough that people said "Whoa! She's even better than Athena!" Knowing greek myth, you should now get a sinking feeling in your stomach for Arachne's future. Anyway, Athena challenged her to a weaving contest, and she saw no option but to agree. So they wove, and when they were both done, the judging was made blind, i.e. those judging did not get to know who had made which work. And of course Arachne won. At which point Athena (generally portrayed as one of the kindest of the goddesses) completely blew her fuse and tore Arachne's contribution to pieces and transformed her into the first spider. And so, all was well in the world again.
I love greek myth.

Yep. The goddess in question was Athena (or Minerva for the Romans).
In my setting, I've tweaked the story slightly. Athene was the prior Goddess of Craftsmanship, who was insulted by people's praise of Arachne's work, challenged her to a weaving contest, and lost, then turned her into a spider out of spite. That (at least by some tellings) is how the original story went (though some have her outright killing Arachne then saying "Oops, that overdid it" and resurrecting her as a spider instead).
In my version, the difference is that Athene became so overwhelmed by her jealousy and hate, that she started neglecting her divine duties and got the mantle of Goddess of Craftsmanship taken from her and handed to Arachne instead. She ended up so obsessed and overwhelmed by her resentment that she took on a new divine role - Irshya, Goddess of Envy and Mother of Harpies, due to literally fusing with her old symbol, an owl.

Darn, I never thought of anything like that for my own pantheon. Just shows how good a writer I am...

I have to admit the main driving force of coming up with her in the first place was a combination of the "I really want a Good spider deity because I'm sick of Lolth making spiders always evil" and "I have an LG theocracy in my setting in need of a patron". Rewriting the Arachne myth just flowed naturally from there.
So now I have a Camelot-esque theocratic monarchy with a heavy arts and crafts focus, an LG Arachne (Drider) high priestess, and a ruling dynasty that tends toward clerics, oracles, or paladins of a spider goddess.

It's too bad there's a good 700 years between Fimbulwinter Come and Angel of Acheron. I doubt even Vidar would still be around then.
Pity. Thistlevale and Somerset aren't too far apart, about a day, day and a half by horse with a night's stop to rest. Maybe two days.
I should really get to actually mapping out my setting in more detail...

i love spiders. They eat things. And I am superstitious around them. I will not idly harm one, for fear of something happening to my aunt, and I would rather move one to another part of the house if it happens to cross my path.
My boyfriend has forbidden me from killing spiders in his house. It's hard to resist the temptation.
He said crickets are fair game, though.

I'm just amused that the reason my "No, bad undead" paladin of death and dhampir would not get along has absolutely nothing to do with the ties to undead.

That's a bummer. What unfortunate timing.

That's really interesting, plus who doesn't like the idea of paladins riding into bettle on giant spiders.
I need to make a paladin of Arachne (the two I have worship different deities) just so I can have them make all the jokes about "You've been ensnared in a web of deceit" and such.

I had some ideas, but after seeing Orthos' I realized all I did was copy, slightly edit then paste ideas from other settings or just myth in general for the most part for my setting. The only ones that might be original (as in created more or less from scratch) now just feel bland to me (except the god of the undead who thinks he's found the truth of existence in his new form), and this bitter feeling's getting worse with each second. Yeah, I think it's one of those mood swings I have again.

Spider jokes? But you wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Oh, sh**. It's exactly a month since the last post - divine glossary. Uh, I think I posted that but it might be of some interest to those who play with homewbrew deities.

I stole plenty from myth, myself, with varying amounts of tweaking. One of the death goddesses in my setting is Ireshkigal, stolen from Babylonian myth (and I believe Golarion has a demon by the same name from the same source); I also have Nidhoggar the gnawing serpent from Norse myth as my God of Gluttony, Eris from Greek/Roman myth as the Goddess of Discord (though heavily also based on her reinterpretation by way of Discordianism), Atargatis (another Sumerian/Babylonian goddess) as my deity of Protection, and Freya from the Norse pantheon and Nyx from Greek/Roman as the Goddesses of Magic.
Most of the "original" deities in my setting are based on characters played by myself or friends, usually in old campaigns or in Neverwinter Nights. Which due to the system of divine ascension we have - basically the actual divine power comes from five Elder Aspect spirits (Good, Evil, Order, Chaos, and Creation) and the various deities ("Avatars") are just individual segments of those aspects, empowered by them... basically different denominations within the same church - allows a bit of fluidity to the pantheon, and an explanation of why old adventurers are now deities: they just happened to be good enough at what they now embody that they caught an Aspect's attention.
Point being, cribbing off mythology isn't necessarily a bad thing. Heck, half of Golarion's stuff is based on or rewritten from various old myths.

I've wanted to post something about it on Homebrew for some time, but could never figure out how exactly to post it. Coming up in conversation like this just makes it easier, I guess. Address individual discussion points or conversation or answer questions as they're posed seems to be a method I can work with better >_>
