Samurai Discussion: Round 1

What *REALLY* fascinates me is the apparent explosion of discussion on the Gunslinger, followed by the Ninja with half posts less, and the quiet and contemplative Samurai at the end.

Sovereign Court

Firearms were always going to be controversial in a high fantasy world... For some reason, players are put off by their noble Paladins and sagely wizards lining up next to a wild west cowboy :P.

I think that the "keep yer guns away from my fantasy" crowd is more or less equal to the "please no anime Naruto crap in my fantasy" crowd which protests the eastern classes.

My take is that Gunslinger introduces a whole bucketload of new mechanics, followed by the Ninja which is a Rogue on steroids, and finally the Samurai who is pretty much an expanded Cavalier variant without many new and unique abilities.

+1

Of the new classes the Samurai needs the least amount of work, has the least amount of wonky special effects. This one is done keep it as is, it works just fine.

suddenly ....NARUTO WITH GUNS....

a DM just woke up with night sweats

What's your AC? Oh right, 10.

I think that one of the best things that you have done so far is choose the Samurai and make him similar to the Caviliar in the West. The Samuraai is so steeped in Tradition that it is hard for anyone in the West to understand-how important his lord was to him. There is no Western character that easily is compared to the Samurai. The powers of the Samurai are also very well chosen. Samurai depended on his horse, his sword and his honor to evoke the mythos of the leader that he was. There was only one man who could have used a wooden Sword and had a legend build up about his exploits-Miamoto Musashi. I like your Samurai and your ninja.

samurai has the least new things.

Ninja is an over done rogue

Gunslinger is so completely new its nearly a new game system in and of its self, the posts are proportionally set compared to how much new stuff was put out to play test.

so just wondering why the amount of threads shown in each is shrinking and growing, like this one is down to one thread... huh?

The gunslinger was the most thrown together and in need of the most corrections. What was posted was frankly, not well thought out compared to most playtest releases, possibly because the concept is still under heavy debate.

The ninja is always controversial (C'mon ranger variant!).

They did a pretty good job with the Samurai, needing only minor tweaks.

Back when the first version of the Magus came out, I commented that the thing seemed thrown together and looked like the developers couldn't figure out how to balance it. Jason dropped by to tell us that they are releasing things a bit earlier compared to what they did in the APG which is why we're seeing a big difference in quality.

I think the Gunslinger still has a lot of potential and, like version 2 of the Magus, Paizo will make it happen.

I am hopeful they will fix it, but I kind of feel like they need to figure out what they want to do.

I always felt like Jason had a clear idea of where they wanted the Magus to be, but were fuzzy on how to get there until the later playtest.

With the gunslinger (and frankly the ninja) I feel more like they know they want to have something for the archtypes, but aren't as clear as to the vision of the end result and are just kind of throwing it all in a pot to see what simmers, possibly because there are three Jason's now, not just one.

But that could end up working. We'll see.

The playtest alchemist was a mess too.

I dont think the gunslinger will be a much of an issue, its just the most different so it will be hard to envision at first.

I am really tried of everyone just getting handed "all martial weapons and full BAB" as a package that never made sense to me.

even more so for the gunsligner

It's based on active threads. If nobody is posting in threads, they go away from direct view.
