Druid Animal Companion Questions

Rules Questions

Hi all. Couldn't find the answers to this on the boards.

When releasing an animal companion and getting a new one, do you get to re-apply the feats and ability scores granted from previous levels to the new companion? or even choose new abilities/feats?

I would assume so because, it seems likely that they would automatically get Link, Evasion, Devotion etc, even if they weren't around when I achieved those levels. Also, it would suck if your companion died and you had to get a new one, but it didn't get the abilities/feats of the former one.

You're new animal companion is advanced according to your druid level. That includes special abilities, feats, skills, etc. These could in theory be the same or different from your original companion depending on the circumstances. The animal companion's power is based on the druid it is bonded to, not the animal itself.

I would say that your new animal companion could be rebuilt from the ground up, especially when you consider that it may be a different animal and thus ineligible for certain feats/skills applied to the previous.

The animal companion, at its core, is a class feature. It's also worth noting that favored class bonuses from races that apply to the animal companion (the half-breeds come to mind) will apply in full to the new companion, as will the human Eye for Talent.

Maybe I'm thinking of another class' animal/eidilon, but doesn't it say that any special abilities yada yada yada don't get applied until the PC gains another level? I think this would be the same. If you get a bear to start and you deck it out and at level 3 he dies. You can get another animal but you'd have to wait until level 4 to reapply skills, feats and progression abilities.

Says that in ultimate combat for the samurai, so probably for the cavalier

I'm very confident that the text you're referring to isn't in the druid class section. I know you have to wait 24 hours to perform the ritual again, but that's it.

Liberty's Edge

that may be referring to the cavalier mounts not getting those things until the cavalier levels up.

PRD writes in the cavalier mount section:

A cavalier's bond with his mount is strong, with the pair learning to anticipate each other's moods and moves. Should a cavalier's mount die, the cavalier may find another mount to serve him after 1 week of mourning. This new mount does not gain the link, evasion, devotion, or improved evasion special abilities until the next time the cavalier gains a level.

This does not effect druids
