So in my constant struggle to flesh out NPCs for my campaign setting I've decided I want to make an evil World of Warcraft Death Knight type character.

I would want this baddie in full-plate, self healing, some kind of damage based aura. He needs to reak of evil and corruption.

So how do I build this beast? Is there a possible way through the base classes? Or would I have to modify a class? I was thinking of modifing an anti-paladin. suggestions?


Take a Barbed Devil and add Anti-Paladin levels to taste?

Damn that is wicked.....remembering for the future.


The most simple would be an Undead Champion Anti-Paladin.
Very nasty!


-Antipaladin with gloves of storing and a lesser rod of quicken metamgic emulates quick casting.

-Damphirs would be able to heal themselves with Lay on Hands.

-A conductive weapon in hands of an antipaladin is just plain cruel.

-You may choose to treat the Life-drinker special ability as a +38 000gp special ability so you could give the antipaladin a conductuve Life-Drinker for 46 320 gp. Bonus points for being undead or Dhampir.

-Negative energy traps will heal an undead/Dhampir and damage the players.

-The damaging aura can be emulated by an automatic reset magical trap inflict minor wounds placed the ¨Deathknigth's¨ armor.

You could use a fictional character like Lord Soth from the dragonlance novels to model your character after.

In fact the link above might even give you some ideas as for powers to give him.


Graveknight is the same as Deathknight. But keep in mind, Soth (and Arathas) were unique creatures. In Soths case, he truely could not die without divine assistance. They had huge backgrounds. I would hope that you would honor the Deathknight tradition by not handing it out to every half brained character and Lord Above, I hope you do not entertain the idea of it more than ultra rare in your campaign.

But if you want to be anywhere near Soth, he will need to have caster levels. Eldritch Knight is a good class, much better than Magus for this type of character. Soth could cast all kinds of spells, not just direct damage melee spells.


I would use a grave knight Anti Paladin or The Graveknight Eldritch Knight. What level and CR im bored on my day off

For conductive weapons do the Cruelty effects also apply to the damage? Also do they get a saving throw verse the damage?

I think Joey is right. The easiest and best way to go would be to use the Graveknight template.

Any way to re-create the Death Grip ability? That would make them shiver - especially any casters.

Cruelty should go through the conductive weapon

Look up the antipaladin about saves

I like to add the +3 to the sword as a Speed Enchancment and throw the channel smite into the weapon to add a few more D6 this guy hits like a ton of bricks


Death Grip could probably be reasonably approximated with a custom magic item that all owed the bearer to cast Telekinesis several times a day. Just throw them toward you.
