Human Skill Ranks

Rules Questions

Scarab Sages

pg 27 Races: Human
Skilled: Humans gain one additional Skill Rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.
Does this mean when I put 1 rank into perception at level 1, it is automatically at rank 2? In addition, does that 1 point become 10 at level 5?

No, it means at every level you have an extra skill rank to spend. If you're a fighter you would get three instead of two skill ranks per level.

So that would be 1 skill point per level or is it progressive? 1st 3+int, 2nd 4+int, 3rd 5+int

No. It just means you get one additonal skill point each level. For example, staying with the Fighter, 1st level 3+int, 2nd level 3+int, etc.

You start your skills at 0 ranks. So at first level when you put one rank into a skill, it is a 1. Now, if it is a class skill, you automatically add a +3 to the skill (the +3 does NOT count as ranks).

And not sure where you are getting a skill at level 5 being 10, but let's say you have Climb as a class skill. At first level you put 1 rank into it, it automatically becomes a +4 (3 of those are from the class skill bonus). If you put one rank in Climb every level, at 5th level it becomes a total of 8. (5 of them ranks).

Also, don't forget you can add a 'favored class bonus' every level as well. You get the option of a +1 to skill or +1 to HP's every level. But that's only if you are playing the favored class(es) of your race.

This is how I read it, but the rewording from additional skill point to rank leaves questions. Such as,Can you have 2 ranks in Diplomacy at level one?

In Pathfinder, skill points and skill ranks are the same thing. You can't take a number of ranks in a skill higher than your Character Level, so no, you can't take two ranks at level 1.

Wow. You hit it directly. It was a matter of finding the terminology. pg 86, First sentence in Acquiring Skills. Thank you.

Yes, skill points and ranks are the same. As for your question, no, the max ranks (skill points) you can have is your current level. So it would only be one rank at level one for Diplomacy.

Is this the same Thatbastion from Lowca-SWG-Fame? If so please contact Me-NegativeApex or Bokata at the TOR-The old Republic Website

Pathfinder never uses the term skill points. Other people use the term skill points, and they do so interchangeably with skill ranks.
